TV take-back: 6 times Emmy nominations were rescinded
Image
It's an honor to be nominated... until you're disqualified.

There are a lot of rules when it comes to the Emmys. Some are pretty standard and easy to remember — the annual eligibility period is June 1-May 31 — and others, well, you gotta read the fine print in the rulebook, even the TV Academy itself. Sometimes things fall through the cracks, but they're usually rectified before nominations are announced (see: Alexis Bledel being ineligible in guest for The Handmaid's Tale this year). When they're not, though, that leads to the unfortunate situation of the TV Academy revoking nominations.

Here are six times the Emmys rescinded nominations, including one instance more than a quarter century later.

Dennis Miller, Dennis Miller Live

In 1995, Miller's HBO talk show, Dennis Miller Live, received three nominations, including for Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. However, the TV Academy soon rescinded the nomination after it...

"Never Say Never": Jim Parsons Weighs Reprising Sheldon For Big Bang Theory Spinoff
Image
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons has shared his thoughts on potentially reprising the role of Sheldon Cooper for a third time. He played the neurotic character in all 12 seasons of the iconic sitcom, later reprising it as the narrator of the seven-season prequel show Young Sheldon, in which he appeared on camera during the series finale. However, he is not currently set to appear in the upcoming untitled Big Bang Theory spinoff, which is not officially greenlit but is in development with returning actors Kevin Sussman, Brian Posehn, and Lauren Lapkus attached to star.

Per Deadline, Jim Parsons recently appeared on Whos Talking To Chris Wallace?, where he spoke about the possibility of returning to the role of Sheldon Cooper once more. He said he did not have interest at the time of the interview, but he added that he would "never say never," reflecting that "life just changes so much.

“Not everything needs to be gay or queer or trans”: Fans Divided as Director of Daniel Craig’s New Movie Goes Viral Over Comment for ‘Gay James Bond’
Image
Daniel Craig is once again returning to the screens, though this time, he will be seen in a pretty much never-seen-before role. This is because this time, he will not be portraying a die-hard action hero like he did during his iconic Bond era, but rather, would be seen in a gay role in filmmaker Luca Guadagnino’s next, Queer.

Of course, this would depict the 56-year-old actor in a new light, much different than the action hero persona he has created for himself. But while his change of lanes is one thing, what has fans truly divided is the director’s response when a fan asked Craig if his longtime character Bond could ever transform into an LGBTQ-themed storyline.

“Takashi Yamazaki is right there?”: Toho Reportedly Eyeing Bleach Director After Godzilla Minus One Success But That’s Concerning for More Than 1 Reason
Image
Toho’s 34th Godzilla film is reportedly eyeing a new director after Takashi Yamazaki-directed film Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. According to sources, the director of the Bleach live-action movie, Shinsuke Sato, will be Toho’s new choice of director.

It is also reported that the film will not be a sequel to the earlier film and will be a standalone work. Fans are not exactly thrilled to hear this news, as they believe that Toho is wasting a great opportunity.

A still from Godzilla Minus One | Toho

After the success of 2016’s live-action Godzilla film Shin Godzilla, Toho developed three animated kaiju films in a series before developing another standalone live-action Godzilla Minus One. Fans are a little disappointed that Toho is going for separate works when it comes to live-action kaiju films.

Image
Marlee Matlin, Ramy Youssef, Lauren Ridloff, Ryan O’Connell and Ali Stroker are among the Hollywood names supporting the Inevitable Foundation’s open letter calling on the industry to shift away from relying on disability consultants and instead hire creatives with disabilities on film and TV projects.

A total of 35 deaf, disabled and allied writers, actors, showrunners and producers signed their names to the letter written and published by the Inevitable Foundation’s co-founders Marisa Torelli-Pedevska and Richie Siegel as part of their new Hire Disabled Writers, Not Just A Disability Consultant initiative.

Paul Feig, Jason Katims, Sian Heder, Liz Tigelaar, Krista Vernoff, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, Josh Feldman, Shoshannah Stern and Timothy Omundson also backed the open letter, pledging to, in their own creative capacities, put more disabled creatives in positions of power and move away from the consultant model. Alejandro González Iñárritu Calls Superheroes ‘Sad Figures’
Image
Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”

If anyone was holding out hope that Alejandro González Iñárritu would change his mind about directing a superhero movie, I don’t have good news for ya.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker doubled down on his dislike of the tentpole genre when I caught up with him at the recent BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills. Calling superheroes “sad figures,” Iñárritu said, “I see heroes every day. I see beautiful people really going through very difficult situations and doing incredible things. And that is the people that I kind of connect with. But these kinds of superpower heroes, really do we need that?”

He continued, “If you need that, is there something missing … instead of admiring what we have, the possibilities that we have?”

Iñárritu first made headlines for blasting superhero movies back in 2014, when he called such films “cultural genocide.” The comment came...

Image
Click here to read the full article.

Warner Bros. Discovery will be shutting down its long-running writers’ and directors’ television workshops at the end of the current 2022-23 season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

While they were not specifically diversity programs exclusively for participants from historically excluded backgrounds, the Warner Bros. Television Workshop was regarded as an important pipeline of opportunity for such artists looking to break into the business. The writers’ workshop had been in existence for more than 40 years, with more recent notable alumni including Akela Cooper (Luke Cage, Blumhouse’s upcoming M3GAN), Zak Schwartz (Wu-Tang: An American Saga, TNT’s Snowpiercer) and Latoya Morgan (The Walking Dead, Into the Badlands). Alumni of the directors’ workshop include Jude Weng (Only Murders in the Building, Finding ‘Ohana), Jaffar Mahmood (Reboot, Young Sheldon) and Regina King.

Last month, Wbd restructured its diversity, equity and inclusion group, with senior vice president Karen Horne,...

1 Show, 3 Networks, 8 Seasons: ‘Queer as Folk’ Canceled
Image
Peacock’s “Queer as Folk” reboot has officially come to an end.

The show, which premiered in June and reimagined the landmark gay series in New Orleans, was created by Russell T. Davies and Stephen Dunn. It starred Devin Way, Fin Argus, Jesse James Keitel, CG, Johnny Sibilly, and Ryan O’Connell and had been praised for featuring a much more diverse cast than previous takes on the property. The unapologetically political reboot was also noteworthy for taking on contemporary issues facing the gay community, such as mass shootings at gay bars (survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando served as consultants).

Dunn took to social media to break the news of its cancellation on Friday night.

“It’s a rare gift in these times, and in this country, to be able to make a show as fearless and unapologetic as ‘Queer As Folk,'” Dunn wrote in an Instagram caption.

Comic-Con 2022: What To Expect From Marvel, Dwayne Johnson & Those Dragonslayers On HBO
Image
After two years without an in-person Comic-Con, fans are definitely holding out for the appearance of a few heroes. Fortunately, the ongoing pandemic — and skepticism over whether the Con will truly enforce those mask protocols — won’t keep the newest caped crusaders from braving the annual nerdfest that kicks off Thursday in San Diego.

Marvel shouldn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. But it’s not expected to shower Hall H with an embarrassment of riches like it did in 2019; some sources believe Marvel is saving it all up for Disney’s fan convention D23 during the second weekend of September, specifically in regards to new projects. There’s still stuff we haven’t seen, specifically the Fantastic Four reboot, Mahershala Ali in The Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (due May 5), The Marvels (July 28, 2023) and The Mutants.

Edie Windsor’s Memoir ‘A Wild And Precious Life’ In Works As Limited Series From Adam Milch & That’s Wonderful Productions
Image
Exclusive: Edie Windsor’s memoir A Wild and Precious Life, the story of the acclaimed LGBTQ activist, is being developed as a limited series by Jim Parsons and Todd Spiewak’s That’s Wonderful Productions and Warner Bros. TV, which optioned the book for television development. Adam Milch (The Morning Show) is attached to write, showrun and executive produce.

The book, which will serve as source material for the series, will explore the life of Windsor, a marriage equality icon of the gay rights movement, her inspiring love story and how it changed the world, by overturning the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma). The project is timely as many perceive civil rights in the U.S., including marriage equality, under threat.

Per the logline: “Edie’s remarkable story changed history, but she was far from a traditional hero, and this series will be anything but your stuffy biopic. Known as the “Grand Dame of gay rights,...

Marvel will make some big waves with its upcoming new movies (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Disney+ series (She-Hulk), but it will keep some powder dry for D23 in early September. However, while Sony will be skipping as the Spider-Verse animated sequel is set for next year. Paramount will be giving fans an early look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. HeyUGuys meets… the cast & creators of Queer as Folk, as they discuss bringing Russell T Davies’ hit series into the modern world
Stephen Dunn on set of Little America
Growing up in Britain, it was hard to avoid the cultural significance that swept the nation with the release of Russell T Davies’ Queer as Folk. It was a revolutionary series, and one still held in high-esteem today. But it is over 20 years old, and the landscape changes, society changes, and the community changes with it – and so Stephen Dunn has brought it, emphatically, into the modern world, with a reboot launching on Starzplay this week.

To mark the occasion we had the pleasure of speaking to a collection of some of its leading stars, such as Ryan O’Connell & Fin Argus, as well as CG & Jesse James Keitel, and then of course the writer himself, Stephen Dunn. We discuss their relationship with the original series, and how a community can rebuild itself, with a plot-line in this series taking inspiration from the tragic mass shooting in Orlando in 2016. Don’t...

Ryan O’Connell Loved Playing a ‘Salty Little Bitch’ on ‘Queer as Folk’
Image
When Ryan O’Connell created “Special,” a semi-autobiographical Netflix series about a gay man with cerebral palsy, he “didn’t give a shit” about making the show palatable to straight people. That show ran for two seasons in 2019 and 2021, with O’Connell as star, executive producer, showrunner and writer. Now, he’s starring in Stephen Dunn’s “Queer as Folk,” a re-imagining of Russell T. Davies’ groundbreaking British TV series, for Peacock. He thinks of the two shows as “spiritual sisters.”

“It’s queer stuff for queer people, like it’s for us,” O’Connell told Variety. “I made ‘Special’ not trying to spoon-feed anything to straight people … And I feel like ‘Queer as Folk’ has that similar attitude, where we’re not explaining queer culture to straight people, we’re just saying, ‘This is our lives, either you’re Dtf or you’re not. Xoxo, Gossip Girl.'”

The experience of working on “Special,...

‘Queer As Folk’ Showrunner Stephen Dunn on Updating the Gay TV Classic for Modern Times
Image
The new Peacock drama “Queer As Folk” opens with a video of naked men dancing in front of a psychedelic backdrop. As it loops, the camera pans out to reveal the TV screen its playing on and show the main lead of the series, Brodie (Devin Way), in the middle of a particularly messy hook-up.

For many viewers, the video might ring some bells to them — it’s similar to the opening sequence of the original U.S. version of “Queer as Folk,” which aired from 2000 to 2005 on Showtime. For Stephen Dunn, the co-showrunner (with Jaclyn Moore) of Peacock’s reimagining of the series, it was one of his first exposures to the queer community, and he wanted the opening to pay homage to it, before introducing them to one that’s completely new.

“There’s definitely a tongue-in-cheek energy with that opening scene,” Dunn tells Variety.

Peacock’s ‘Queer as Folk’: TV Review
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The catalyzing event in Peacock’s new Queer as Folk is a horrific act of violence. Midway through the first episode, an unnamed shooter enters a New Orleans gay club called Babylon and opens fire on the crowd of partiers. Most of our main characters are among them, and for the rest of the eight-episode season, they’ll grapple with their lingering guilt and grief, with the unthinkable ways their lives changed that night, with the holes it left in the center of their community.

Yet despite the heavy premise, the series as a whole is surprisingly light on its feet. Sure, here and there are painful excavations of trauma or equally tear-jerking moments of defiant joy. But for the most part, the series allows its characters to be every bit as messy or silly or sexy or serious after the shooting as they were before.

Peacock’s ‘Queer as Folk’ Is a Raucous, Tonally Unsteady Ride: TV Review
Image
The very first thing one sees in each episode of the new reboot of “Queer as Folk” — before the action even starts — is the handwritten name of the streamer on which it appears, with an underline jauntily appearing beneath the last four letters of “Peacock.” It’s an elbow to the ribs, or to regions further south, that comes on strong from the earliest moments of the series; do you get it? Do you?

This show, about the lives of queer and trans people in New Orleans, centers that one syllable, and a few similar terms: Like the early-2000s Showtime series that preceded it (itself based on a British drama by Russell T. Davies), “Queer as Folk” 2022 is relentless in its pursuit of pleasure. But that enjoyment, here, often exists for the characters more than for the viewer. “Queer as Folk” has an abrasive, punky insouciance that’s charming,...

Queer as Folk Trailer: Peacock Reboot Showcases a Community Recovering After Heartbreaking Tragedy
Sharon Gless, Hal Sparks, Michelle Clunie, Robert Gant, Thea Gill, Gale Harold, Randy Harrison, Scott Lowell, and Peter Paige in Queer as Folk (2000)
Reboots are tricky.

Some of them set out to replicate what made the original a success, but Peacock's reboot of Queer as Folk reboot is putting a timely spin with a fresh take on what made the Channel 4 hit, as well as the Showtime series, success stories.

This new series is described as a "reimagining," and it's easy to understand why.

"Queer As Folk is a vibrant reimagining of the groundbreaking British series created by Russell T. Davies, exploring a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy," the logline teases.

The new show stars Devin Way (Grey’s Anatomy) as Brodie, a chaotic commitment-phobe who finds reason to stay in New orleans after a tragedy rocks his community.

Fin Argus (The Gifted) plays Mingus, a cocky high schooler whose confidence belies their lack of real-world experience.

Jesse James Keitel (Big Sky) stars as Ruthie,...

The show is a reimagining of the groundbreaking British series created by Russell T. Davies it follows “a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy.” The tragedy is also heavily hinted at in the trailer.

“Like most queer ‘90s kids, I had a unique relationship with the original ‘Queer as Folk,'” Stephen Dunn, creator, executive producer, writer and director of the Peacock version, previously said in a statement. “Growing up, I was desperate for any sort of connection with people like me. It was the first time I really felt seen. The show offered a new paradigm – one where we could accept and celebrate queer love, families, and communities on a global stage.

The groundbreaking British series “Queer as Folk” flies over to Peacock for its third iteration ripe for a whole new generation.

Showrunner Stephen Dunn (“Closet Monster”), who also writes, directs, and executive produces the Peacock original series.
