‘The Occupant’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Caroline Nicolian, Nathan Hollabaugh, David Flick, Owen Miller, Rik Billock, Megan Bolton, Andrew Ashbrook Freed, Dylan Grunn, Julia Best Warner | Written and Directed by Samuel Krebs

Let’s not mess around, The Whooper Returns is a terrible title for a film – which is why it’s been renamed for a wide US release as The Occupant (which isn’t that much better Tbh). It’s a film that takes the familiar tropes of haunted house stories and turns them on their head, creating a meta take on films like The Amityville Horror, if that film turned out to be based on a story made up by a mentally troubled housewife and her kids. Which might be the case knowing That franchise!

The Occupant opens in a faux-vhs style as we, the audience, watch a Halloween broadcast of The Whooper – a film based on the haunting of the Schepp family home.

Demonic Possession + Haunted House Horror 'The Occupant' Trailer
Javier Gutiérrez, Mario Casas, Bruna Cusí, and Iris Vallés Torres in The Occupant (2020)
"This house isn't really haunted..." "Some might debate that." Devilworks has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror thriller called The Occupant, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Samuel Krebs. This originally went under the title The Whooper Returns, which sounds much more interesting, but I can see how that might confuse some people (who or what is the Whooper?). Following the death of their mother, four estranged siblings find themselves fighting for their inheritance and for their lives when an eccentric stranger arrives, claiming their famous haunted childhood home was left to her. They all start experiencing strange, inexplicable manifestations, which has malevolent effects on everyone in the house. Starring Rik Billock, David Flick, Dylan Grunn, Nathan Hollabaugh, Caroline Nicolian, and Megan Bolton. Looks like fairly generic, derivative supernatural horror, even with Christmas lights like "Stranger Things". Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Samuel Krebs' The Occupant, direct...

Whelm, the Great Depression-era indie written and directed by Skyler Lawson and shot on Kodak 16mm, is setting its rollout that will include a 35mm roadshow screenings that begins next month in Beverly Hills.

The news comes as Gravitas Ventures came aboard to acquired North American digital rights to the pic, which is set in the Midwest at the height of the Great Depression and follows estranged brothers (Ronan Colfer and Dylan Grunn) as they become tangled in a rivalry between a legendary bank robber and an eccentric young criminal, finding they are a part of a larger historic scheme.

Horrhiffic 2021: ‘The Whooper Returns’ Review

Stars: Caroline Nicolian, Nathan Hollabaugh, David Flick, Owen Miller, Rik Billock, Megan Bolton, Andrew Ashbrook Freed, Dylan Grunn, Julia Best Warner | Written and Directed by Samuel Krebs

Let’s not mess around, The Whooper Returns is a terrible title for a film that takes the familiar tropes of haunted house stories and turns them on their head, creating a meta take on films like The Amityville Horror. ‘The Retreat’ Review
Image
Stars: Grant Schumacher, Dylan Grunn, Chris Cimperman, Rick Montgomery Jr., Peter Stray, Ariella Mastroianni, Catherine Daddario | Written and Directed by Bruce Wemple

When you watch some many low budget independent horror movies you get used to having low expectations. Unfortunately, as much as I wish it wasn’t the case, I watch a lot of very average and sometimes very poor independent movies. But there’s always hope that the one you watch will buck the trend and actually be good. Well The Retreat might just be that one.

Horror films where friends go to a cabin in the woods and are attacked by ‘something’ doesn’t exactly sound original. Despite this, The Retreat does a good job of not feeling like a thousand other similar movies. A couple of friends hire a small place to go on a backpacking trip together but things soon go awry when one of...

The Retreat - Jennie Kermode - 16359
Dylan Grunn
The end of a long relationship is a precarious time. Sometimes it can be an opportunity for growth and learning more about oneself, but at other times - especially if it has been the centre of one's life and one has few people around to help pick up the pieces - it can be seriously disorientating, prompting one to question key aspects of one's own identity. That's one thing when the relationship was a romantic one, because most people understand the feelings involved and are quick to sympathise. It can be harder to find support when parting ways with a best friend.

Adam (Dylan Grunn) is about to get married. Gus (Grant Schumacher) understands this; he likes Adam's fiancée and they get along. It will mean, however, that Adam moves away. In the future, they'll barely sees each other, though their lives have revolved around one another for years. Gus,...

The Retreat Draws a Wendigo Out of the Darkness and onto the Screen this November 10th
Tagline: "There's Something Waiting in the Mountains." The Retreat is an upcoming horror feature, focusing on an Indigenous legend - the Wendigo. This creature has been put to film before in films like Larry Fessenden's Wendigo (2001) and others. This time, two hikers head up to Upstate New York. Here, they encounter a monster, which bloodies their hiking trip. Developed by director Bruce Wemple (Monstrous), this feature centrally stars: Grant Schumacher (Lake Artifact), Dylan Grunn (Left Hand) and Catharine Daddario. A trailer was released late last week and the clip can be found below, in case you missed it. The trailer shows the creature, in some of the scenes. With glowing eyes, it attacks at night, leaving Gus and Adam disoriented in open country. Now, this duo must find a way to overcome this supernatural entity, before the remaining light of day fizzles out. Uncork'd Entertainment will show The Retreat on DVD and Digital,...

‘Monstrous’ Review
Image
Stars: Anna Shields, Rachel Finninger, Grant Schumacher, Hannah McKechnie, Catharine Daddario, Dylan Grunn, Peter Stray, Thomas Brazzle, Kyrie Ellison, Rick Montgomery Jr. | Written by Anna Shields | Directed by Bruce Wemple

It’s maybe a little surprising that there isn’t actually that many horror movies centered around the legend of Bigfoot. The most well known is perhaps the 1972 cult fake documentary horror The Legend of Boggy Creek, which is much more entertaining than you might expect. The Blair Witch Project director Eduardo Sanchez created my favourite Bigfoot film with the found-footage-style movie Exists in 2014. So I am always happy to see a new movie based on the legendary ‘creature’.

In Monstrous we see a young woman, Sylvia (Anna Shields – who also wrote the movie) searching for her friend who has gone missing in an area that is known for its Bigfoot sightings. Her search though leads her to find things other than the monster.

Monstrous – Review (2020)
Image
By Marc Butterfield

Sylvia, a lonely 20-something, goes searching for answers after her friend mysteriously vanishes in Whitehall, NY, an Adirondack town known for its Bigfoot sightings. She sets off with a mysterious, charming young woman, Alex, hellbent on getting to Whitehall for different reasons. Sylvia soon learns that hiding in the woods is an evil more sinister than she could ever imagine.

From director Bruce Wemple, Monstrous stars Anna Shields, Rachel Finninger, Grant Schumacher, Hannah McKechnie, Catharine Daddario, Dylan Grunn, Peter Stray, Rick Montgomery Jr., and Thomas Brazzle

The tagline line reads “Something is out there”… and its not what you think it is.

If you’re a bigfoot aficionado, let me tell you…this probably isn’t the movie for you. I was initially excited to learn about a new bigfoot movie, one that seemed to be, going it, a drama. Boy was I disappointed. The story itself struggles with the characters…...
