James Gunn
Weapons’ young star Cary Christopher joins HBO’s Lanterns
James Gunn
James Gunn has not revealed much about Lanterns other than that it would be a mystery along the lines of True Detective. Following a couple of Lantern Corps members, the heroes would investigate an Earth-based mystery. While having a pair of space cops with rings that allow them to make amazing weapons seems like overkill for a police procedural, it should make for some fun twists to come from the new series. It would also allow the series to differentiate itself from the slew of other comic book properties coming from DC, which is aiming to diversify its catalog of properties. DC Studios co-leader Peter Safran has also revealed that the investigation in Lanterns will tie directly into the main storyline of the new Dcu.

Deadline is reporting that child actor Cary Christopher of Days of Our Lives and Weapons has now joined the DC limited series as young Noah.

‘Days Of Our Lives’ Actor Cary Christopher Joins ‘Lanterns’ DC Series At HBO
Image
Exclusive: Rising young actor Cary Christopher will guest star in Lanterns, based on the Green Lantern DC comic.

The series, from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Christopher is set to play Young Noah, a polite and charming small-town kid. Quite gifted for his age and effortlessly good at whatever he tries, he’s happiest when passing a football.

He joins the previously announced cast: Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, Chris Coy, and Paul Ben-Victor.

HBO produces the eight-episode series Lanterns in association with Warner Bros Television and DC Studios. Mundy, who serves as showrunner,...

‘Hamilton’: Disney Sets Post Labor Day Theatrical Release For Filmed Version Of Broadway Stage Musical; Watch New Trailer
Image
Hamilton architect and star Lin-Manuel Miranda spilled the beans last night on The Tonight Show that the filmed version of his Tony-winning period Broadway show will hit theaters on Sept. 5. Disney will have more details very soon on this. The release date is already on Comscore. You can also see a new trailer above.

Disney in February 2020 bought the filmed version of the stage show for $75M, planning a theatrical release for October 2021. Covid sidetracked those plans and Hamilton dropped on Disney+ in July 2020 to great viewership success and ultimately two Emmy wins in a 12 nom count, including Outstanding Variety Special.

Hamilton will face off during the post Labor Day weekend with New Line’s Conjuring: Last Rites.

Hamilton additionally will be released in theaters in Canada, and Puerto Rico on Sept. 5, the UK and Ireland on Sept. 26, and Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 13.

Among box office benchmarks for Hamilton,...

Did Anthony Ramos Cheat on Jasmine Cephas Jones? Ramos Hints at Sleeping With a Woman From a Strip Club
Image
Anthony Ramos and Jasmine Cephas Jones were an item from 2014 when they first met on the production of Broadway’s Hamilton. They got engaged in 2018 and were celebrated by fans until everything came crashing down. His reputation took a major hit when he was accused of cheating on his fiancée.

In 2021, reports emerged that the Twisters actor was spotted with another woman in a strip club. A TikTok user claimed that she saw a man and a woman “sitting on stage, tipping the dancers and being all over each other.” She shared that she Googled the man and found out that he was engaged to his longtime girlfriend, who wasn’t the woman in the club.

The video spread on social media like wildfire after fans claimed that it was Ramos in the video. Ramos and Jones broke up not long after the rumors in November 2021, calling off their engagement...

'Lanterns' Actor Ulrich Thomsen Teases Dcu Future as Sinesto
Image
The Dcu is in full-swing thanks to Superman hitting theaters this summer, and DC Studios looks to ride that momentum with a long-awaited series. Expected to debut in early 2026, HBO's Lanterns has reportedly wrapped production. The show follows John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) as a pair of space cops investigating a mystery, but it will also introduce perhaps the most iconic Green Lantern villain of all time.

Lanterns star Ulrich Thomsen took to social media to share an image of himself with his mustache half-shaved, seemingly teasing his transformation as Sinestro. The Green Lantern villain will make his Dcu debut in the HBO series in 2026, but the actor teases a bright future is ahead for the character. His caption reads,"Bye for now [Sinestro] – I'll keep one side for later. Hope too see you again." It seems he has wrapped filming his scenes as Sinestro, which coincides...

Lanterns Casting Details Reveal Surprising Plans To Explore Hal Jordan's Dcu History - Possible Spoilers
Image
DC Studios' approach to Lanterns has been interesting, to say the least. While it's hard to fault the decision to make John Stewart the Dcu's main Green Lantern, casting a 59-year-old Hal Jordan (and a 54-year-old Guy Gardner) wasn't something anyone saw coming.

Still, it means those characters have a built-in history in the Dcu, and Nexus Point News has today confirmed that Hal's past will be explored in the upcoming HBO Max TV series.

Lanterns has already cast younger and older versions of John's parents, as well as a child version of the character and his brother. That's led to speculation about a flashback episode for the hero, and the same may be in the works for Hal as his parents, Martin and Jessica Jordan, are also being cast.

According to the site, "Martin is described as handsome, confident, charming, but hides a deep sadness. Similar to the comics,...

Beginning with Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and Aaron Burr themselves, the medley swelled first with “Non-Stop,” with the former then taking over for “My Shot.” Enter stage left Phillipa Soo with “That Would Be Enough,” later completing...

Lanterns Reportedly Adds Oscar-Nominated Love Actually Star - Is She Playing The Dcu's Carol Ferris?
Image
DC Studios has attracted some exciting talent for the Dcu, though it could do with a few more A-listers. Fortunately, Jeff Sneider is reporting today that Laura Linney has joined the cast of HBO Max's Lanterns.

The Love Actually star has been the recipient of many awards, including three Emmys and two Golden Globes. She's also received three Academy Award nominations.

Who is Linney playing? Sneider isn't sure. However, Kyle Chandler is 59 and Linney is 61; taking that into account, it would make sense for her to take on the role of Carol Ferris, the love of Hal Jordan's life and the superhero known as Star Sapphire. The reporter acknowledged that it's a possibility on The Hot Mic podcast.

We wouldn't be surprised if she's powerless in the Dcu, unless the Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo and Violet, Black, White, and Ultraviolet Corps from across the emotional spectrum have existed for years.

Lanterns Actor Garret Dillahunt Drops Hint That He's Playing Green Arrow; James Gunn Responds
Image
Yesterday, some images posted by Lanterns actor Garrett Dillahunt sparked speculation that the Deadwood and Last House of the Left star might be set to play Oliver Queen in the upcoming HBO series.

When Dillahunt's casting was announced, he was said to be playing a character named William Macon, who was described as "a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade."

It's easy enough to understand why fans might have assumed that he's really playing Ollie - the actor appeared in costume as Green Arrow in some behind-the-scenes photos and storyboard shots, after all - but whatever his reasons for sharing the since-deleted Insta post, it doesn't look like he'll be suiting up as the Emerald Archer in the Dcu.

When asked if there was any truth to the rumor that Dillahunt might have been cast as Ga on Threads, DC Studios co-head...

Lanterns Adds Paul Ben-Victor As A Mysterious "Extraterrestrial" Villain - Could This Be Atrocitus?
Image
Lanterns has been filming for a while at this stage, but we have word on yet another late addition to the cast of the DC Studios/HBO series.

Deadline reports that veteran actor Paul Ben-Victor (Nobody Wants This) is set for a key recurring role as Antaan, "an extraterrestrial devoted to exposing the truth and exacting vengeance against those who wronged his people. Consumed by a deep and unrelenting hatred for the law, he is determined to deliver justice on his own terms."

Antaan isn't an established DC Comics character, and based on the description above, there's speculation that Ben-Victor could actually be playing Atrocitus.

Introduced in Green Lantern vol. 4 #25 back in 2008, Atros witnessed the deaths of his wife and children when the rogue Manhunters laid waste to Space Sector 666. Renaming himself "Atrocitus", he and four survivors formed a terrorist cabal known as the Five Inversions, who made it their...

Lanterns: Everything we know about the upcoming Dcu HBO series (gun-wielding John Stewart spotted on set)
Image
What Do We Know About the upcoming Dcu original series Lanterns? More thank you may think. The HBO series will be the first live-action project on television from James Gunn’s rebooted DC cinematic universe. With casting announcements, rumors, and more, we know a lot of what is to come. So, let’s jump in and discuss Lanterns.

We will see multiple Green Lanterns

While we met several members of the Green Lantern Corps in the Ryan Reynolds-led feature film, this new series is intentionally plural, as we will meet more than just Hal Jordan. According to James Gunn, Lanterns will center on Jon Stewart, who briefly appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in a non-speaking role. We also know that James Gunn’s longtime friend and collaborator Nathan Fillion is portraying Lanterns hero Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman movie and will potentially appear.

Kyle Chandler is Hal Jordan,...

Lanterns Set Photos Show Aaron Pierre's (Powerless?) John Stewart In The Middle Of A Gunfight
Image
Lanterns is currently shooting in Atlanta, and while we've already had a first official look at the Dcu's Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the latter - portrayed by actor Aaron Pierre - has now been spotted on set.

Once again, his superhero costume is nowhere to be found. We can't even see John's Green Lantern Corps Power Ring, and his carrying a gun into battle suggests he might not have it for some reason.

Fans have wondered how Lanterns will portray these heroes, particularly on a television budget. HBO doesn't shy away from investing heavily in its offerings, but several episodes of CG-heavy Green Lantern action would soon add up; depowering Hal and John for a while might help.

While Lanterns has been described as a grounded story, Superman star, Nathan Fillion, has been confirmed to return as Guy Gardner.

"This is James Gunn. He's amazing, he's huge, he's world famous,...

'Lanterns' Cast Continues To Expand With a 'Walking Dead' Star
Image
HBO's Lanterns series is still ever-expanding after recently adding Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner into the fold. Per Deadline, Lawman: Bass Reeves star Chris Coy is now the latest addition to the upcoming Green Lantern drama series in a guest-starring role. He's set to embody a mysterious new character by the name of Waylon Sanders, described as "an intelligent survivor or a nervous truck driver." If that wasn't confusing enough, his real name and age remain an enigma, and he's said to be "unbound by the laws of nature." It's unclear what role he'll play and whether he'll be a friend or a foe to Lantern recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).

Coy boards a group that has grown significantly in recent weeks, with Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jason Ritter among those on board thus far.

Lanterns Officially Adds Superman Actor Nathan Fillion As Guy Gardner
Image
Coming off rumors that Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner will make an appearance in the upcoming Lanterns series, Deadline has confirmed that the Firefly alum will indeed be a part of the HBO series.

We're not sure how significant of a role Fillion will play in the show, as the site only notes that he will return as Gardner after making his debut as the character in James Gunn's Superman.

While speaking to TV Line about his long-running series, The Rookie, in a recent interview, Fillion shared some new details on his interpretation of Gardner.

"He's a jerk!," said the actor when asked what separates Guy from his fellow ring-slinging heroes. "What's important to know is, you don't have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is...

HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Series Adds Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner Ahead of ‘Superman’
Image
The Green Lantern Corps just got louder, because Nathan Fillion is returning as Guy Gardner in HBO’s Lanterns series following his debut as the hotheaded Green Lantern in this summer’s Superman, which hits theaters on July 11, as per EW. Fillion joins previously announced leads Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, who are playing John Stewart and Hal Jordan, respectively, in the upcoming prestige DC drama.

Lanterns is the first live-action series to be made from scratch under the new leadership of DC — James Gunn and Peter Safran — as part of the new slate, and is being developed as a dark, grounded, True Detective-style mystery set on Earth. The story follows John Stewart as a rookie Lantern recruited into the Corps, who teams up with veteran Hal Jordan to investigate a murder in the American heartland that spirals into a much bigger cosmic conspiracy.

Gunn had previously hinted that “a...

Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Confirmed for Dcu Return After James Gunn's Superman
Image
Another member of the Green Lantern Corps is now confirmed to appear in Lanterns. Nathan Fillion will reprise his Superman role of Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in the HBO series, which is currently in production.

Sources close to Entertainment Weekly revealed the casting reprisal. Fillion is set to make his DC Universe debut as Guy Gardner in James Gunn's Superman, alongside fellow heroes Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Superman (David Corenswet). At this time, it's unclear how exactly Fillion's Guy Gardner will factor into Lanterns, which is set to focus on arguably the two most well-known Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart, portrayed by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, respectively.

Lanterns was first announced as part of the initial DC Studios slate in January 2023. The series, which has been described as True Detective in the DC Universe, was ordered to series by...

Lanterns Director Teases Humor And Promises The Show "Doesn't Lack Its Sci-Fi Magic" Despite Grounded Setting
Image
Cameras are currently rolling on Lanterns, and Slow Horses' James Hawes has been tapped to helm the first two episodes.

Those will set the tone for Green Lantern's corner of the Dcu, and thanks to Ryan Reynolds frequently reminding people how bad the 2011 movie was, they'll also be vital in convincing people to give the Corps another chance.

Hawes has an impressive list of credits to his name; as well as directing the Rami Malek-led The Amateur, he's previously worked on shows like Snowpiercer, The Alienist, Black Mirror, and Raised by Wolves.

Discussing his vision for Lanterns with Collider, Hawes said, "There is a very particular humor that they brought to this. It's very rooted in a way that I like to think we achieve with Slow Horses, that I achieve with things like my Black Mirror's, and yet there is a rich vein of humor running through it.

After The Success Of Wicked & Moana 2, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Next Musical Should Be His Take On A 70's Cult Classic
Image
After the box-office success of musicals like Wicked and Moana 2, Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical collaboration with Eisa Davis on a remix of The Warriors should be the next Miranda film adaptation. 2024 has been a good time for movie musicals, with plenty of successes found on the big screen. Even beyond the historic heights of Wicked and Moana 2, films as diverse as Emilia Pérez, Spellbound, Mean Girls, Joker: Folie à Deux, The End, and Mufasa: The Lion King highlight how versatile and varied the genre has proven to be in modern film.

This leaves the door open for plenty of other big musical adaptations, with other upcoming movie musicals set to make their mark at the box office. However, one of the most exciting prospects that currently doesn't have a movie planned actually has an established cinematic history. Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2024 musical collaboration with Eisa Davis reimagined the 1979 film as a...

Why Stephen DeMarco From Tell Me Lies Looks So Familiar
Image
In the Hulu original series "Tell Me Lies" — adapted by Meaghan Oppenheimer from Carola Lovering's book of the same name — lead Jackson White is saddled with a difficult task: he has to play the worst boyfriend anyone's ever had. As a student at the fictional Baird College (located somewhere in upstate New York) who dreams of becoming a lawyer, White's character Stephen DeMarco is odious right from the very beginning ... and his worst qualities are out in full force as he pursues freshman Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten). Early in the show's first episode, "Tell Me Lies" establishes not one but two timelines; in 2008, Stephen and Lucy attend Baird and carry on a fraught on-again, off-again relationship, and in 2015, a grown-up Lucy and Stephen are stuck attending the wedding of their friends Bree (Catherine Missal) and Evan (Branden Cook), desperately trying to avoid one another.

So where have you seen White before?...

Lin-Manuel Miranda on Whether ‘Warriors’ Is His Next Broadway Show, Writing for ‘Mufasa’
Image
Lauryn Hill was announced Wednesday as one of the lead singers on Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis’s new concept album of The Warriors.

As for whether the concept album, which also features Busta Rhymes, Rza, Ghostface Killah, Colman Domingo and more alongside an all-female gang, will become the Hamilton creator’s next full-length stage show, Miranda said it will depend on the reception.

“The plan is just to release it and see how people respond,” Miranda said at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in Manhattan Wednesday. He added that the project did not have a director or producers yet attached.

The album, due to be released Oct. 18, musicalizes the 1979 film that follows a street gang making their way from the Bronx to their home in Coney Island and encountering other gangs en route.

Miranda was initially presented with the idea in 2009, after writing In the Heights, but did not...
