This A-List Horror Movie Bombed in Theaters — Now It’s #1 on Max
Image
I lived through the uncertainty of Y2K and have vivid memories of the ordeal. The anxiety was real. People were convinced that the sky was falling. Thankfully, the sky did not fall. But what if it actually did? That’s the question the #1 movie on Max today posits. Y2K imagines an alternate New Year’s Eve 1999 where instead of business as usual, technology revolted.

That sounds like such a promising premise. You get a bit of (ultra-late) ‘90s nostalgia and a major cultural milestone reimagined with dire consequences. Unfortunately, the execution of this period piece is lacking. Many critics called attention to the film’s tonal inconsistencies and said that a lot of the jokes don’t quite land.

Here’s a bit more context on the setup for this A24 Horror thriller on Max:

On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party,...

Rachel Zegler's Very Funny 2024 Sci-Fi Flop Is Finally Finding Fans On Max
Image
I'm not entirely sure why "Y2K" didn't fare better at the box office. However you look at it, $3.7 million on a $15 million budget just isn't good, and frankly director, co-writer, and "Saturday Night Live" alum Kyle Mooney deserved more. Not only is the man a comedy legend, but he also seemed to have a winning idea with "Y2K." You can imagine the A24 execs being quickly convinced during the pitch meeting: "What if Y2K actually happened?" It's such a simple idea that, as Mooney said frequently on the press tour, he couldn't believe nobody had done it. What's more, we're firmly in the age of early 2000s nostalgia now — right on time, too, if you believe in the 20-year cultural cycle rule.

As such, a horror-comedy about a Y2K doomsday actually happening from one of the most innovative comedians working today seems like it should have been a surefire hit.

Jaeden Martell at an event for Knives Out (2019)
Y2K Will Crash Max April 4
Jaeden Martell at an event for Knives Out (2019)
WB streaming service Max currently has an exclusivity deal with A24 that guarantees all their movies will appear on that service first (and HBO). The next to roll out is Y2K, the period piece comedy-thriller from late last year. Y2K takes place in the time frame that its title implies, and is initially about two boys who crash a rager, unaware that everything else is about to crash. One came with the goal of finally asking out his crush, but they both have their eyes on the giant bottles of booze. They don’t get very far with either goal before the Y2K bug actually hits, and turns out to be as bad as everyone says it is, only worse. No one predicted that VCRs were going to come alive and Tamagotchis were going to turn murderous, but hindsight is 20/20….or 2000 in this case. With its action-oriented,...

5 fantasy books to read if you miss House of the Dragon
Image
If you're missing your favorite show, a good way to pass the time might be to watch a different show that has some things in common with it. But what about finding a few good books to read instead? There are some excellent fantasy books that will fill the House of the Dragon void right now.

House of the Dragon is one of those shows that covers a lot of genres. It’s historical fiction, with many elements based on English history. Then there are the fantasy elements of dragons and visions, as well as the battles, the romance, and the political scheming.

The great news is there are plenty of fantasy books out there that will help to bridge the gap before the third season of House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and Max in 2026. Some of them are standalone books, while others are bigger series of books with expansive worlds.

‘Y2K’ Review

Stars: Jaeden Martell, Tim Heidecker, Alicia Silverstone, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, Kyle Mooney | Written by Evan Winter | Directed by Kyle Mooney

At the end of 1999 humanity faced the first major crisis of the computer era, the Y2K Bug. For those lucky enough to be too young to remember, it was feared the fact most programs hard coded the “19” and only stored the last two digits of a year in memory would cause them to think the year 2000 was actually 1900 and plunge the world into chaos.

While there were some problems, it ended up being considerably less than the end of the world as we know it. The biggest problem I had to deal with was my copy of WWE 2K20 crashing until I could download and installed a patch. The characters in Saturday Night Live regular turned first-time director Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter’s alternate history...

A24’s apocalyptic comedy Y2K gets a digital release next week
Y2K (2024)
A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.

The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

A24's 'Y2K' Set to Hit Digital Platforms on December 24
Image
The turnaround from theatrical to digital is faster when a film has a less-than-desirable run at the box office, and this is true of the disaster horror comedy Y2K. The A24 release opened on Dec. 6 and has grossed a mere $3.8 million on a $15 million budget. It didn't light the box office on fire, but its upcoming digital release will likely expose it to more people who missed it in theaters, as you'll be able to watch it at home just in time for the Christmas and holiday break.

Y2K will be released digitally on Dec. 24, which is perfect timing for a couple of reasons. The target audience for the movie will be on holiday break, and they'll likely be looking for something fun to watch at home. It also arrives right before the New Year, which coincides with the film's theme of ringing in the holiday, albeit without the...

Image
Another one of A24's horror movies from this year will be headed to digital soon. It's the horror-comedy Y2K, and it will be available on digital platforms a little earlier than expected. We're not complaining, though. Now, we have something new to watch before the year wraps up.

According to an A24 press release, Y2K will be released on digital on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, aka Christmas Eve. On this date, you'll be able to rent or purchase the film through digital platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and AppleTV. In fact, you currently have the option to pre-order the movie on these sites for the price of $24.99 before taxes.

Will Y2K come to streaming? Yes, the horror-comedy will eventually land on a streaming platform. It will most likely drop on Max at a later date because of a multiyear exclusive deal that Warner Bros. Discovery...

Kyle Mooney Has Ideas About Singalongs in Movie Theaters
Image
The box office has been set ablaze once again thanks to the recent hit musicals Moana 2 and Wicked, the latter having a Broadway history to the extent that many musical lovers may already know most of the songs by heart. Some have seen the staged production multiple times and are still looking forward to seeing Wicked on the big screen more than once. And many of those fans, according to reports, have been so enthralled by the magic of Oz that they can't help but whip out their phones and quite literally take photographs of the theater screen in excitement.

Another issue surrounding musical films like Wicked is those same fans refusing to stay quiet and singing aloud in theaters along with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as they belt out some of the most iconic songs in Broadway history. Could that type of audience participation perhaps cause the...

'Y2K' Fans Need to Watch This Underrated 1999 Horror Comedy
Image
Quick Links 'Idle Hands' Is Very '90s 'Idle Hands' Shines Because It Was Different From Its Horror Movie Counterparts 'Idle Hand's Financial Failure Was Out of Its Control

In the horror comedy Y2K, director Kyle Mooney, with a screenplay assist from Evan Winter, takes us back in time as society was preparing to conquer the Year 2000 problem as they put 1999 behind them. Y2K plays on the fear that technology would take over as soon as the ball dropped and 2000 kicked in and turns that fear into a hilarious reality. It's a true tonal blend, something that can be hard to do successfully. Sometimes, in films like these, the horror is legit, but the comedy is lacking, or the horror is too tame, but the jokes land with more ease. Mooney is successful at blending both, much like director Rodman Flender was back in 1999 with his very own horror comedy.

Quick Links The Details of 1999 in 'Y2K' Are Everywhere Fred Durst Solidifies 'Y2K’s' 1999 Aesthetic

Directed by SNL alum Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut and co-written by him and Evan Winter, Y2K follows two high school outcasts, Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who finally decide to live a little by crashing a major party at a classmate’s house on New Year's Eve in 1999. What begins as a Superbad or Can’t Hardly Wait style comedy, rife with all the woes of teenage angst, quickly morphs into an imaginative and bloody version of the actual computer problem the country potentially faced as the year 2000 rolled in.

However, in Mooney’s film, the computers take over at midnight and people’s worst fears come to fruition as technology comes to life and immediately turns against humanity. As a result, Eli and Danny come face...

Y2K Movie Review: Rachel Zegler Has a Bloody Disappointing New Year's Eve
Image
The following contains spoilers for Y2K, in theaters now.

Kyle Mooney's curiously conflicted directorial debut Y2K is a film about '90s teens on the precipice of adulthood, starring Gen-Zers, who are playing Millenials. Its target audience is those who've spent enough time on AOL to get nostalgic upon hearing a dial-up modem tone. Its humor comes from the Judd Apatow school, in which characters riff until jokes land. In short, it's a hardly marketable endeavor for A24. Still, for those who fit right into the niche of being old enough literally, young enough figuratively, and interested in some of the film's reference points, Y2K captures the spirit of its time.

Y2K's story concerns a group of youths on New Year's Eve 1999, including Eli (played by It alum Jaeden Martell) and Laura (Snow White's Rachel Zegler). They belong to a group of easily readable characters...

Y2K Ending, Explained: How Does the Group Take Down the Machines?
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Y2K.

Exploding with just about every reference from 1999, Y2K is a horror comedy directed by SNL alum Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut, which is also co-written by him and Evan Winter. The film follows two high school losers named Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison), who finally decide to live a little by crashing the house party of a classmate on New Year's Eve in 1999. With plenty of Can’t Hardly Wait and Superbad vibes, the beginning of the film is rife with all the woes of teenage angst but rapidly shifts toward a bloody and imaginative version of the Y2K issue that plagued the country leading up to the year 2000.

In reality, nothing happened. However, in Mooney’s film, machines take over at the stroke of midnight and subsequently turn against humanity, either killing them or assimilating them. Now on the cusp of an apocalypse,...

Kyle Mooney Explains Why Directorial Debut ‘Y2K’ Becomes A “Whole Different Movie” After This Shocking Kill & If Myspace’s Tom Survives
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about Y2K.

Kyle Mooney is partying like its 1999 with the release of his directorial debut Y2K, a nostalgic horror comedy that plays on a familiar public hysteria 25 years later.

The Saturday Night Live alum, who directed and co-wrote the A24 film with Evan Winter, told Deadline that the coming-of-age story becomes a “whole different movie” after the unexpectedly heartfelt death scene of Julian Dennison‘s Danny.

“I felt like we knew it was coming, and it was fascinating, because we shot pretty much chronologically, and so we were making this whole different movie,” explained Mooney of the film, which is now in theaters.

Set on New Year’s Eve in 1999, Y2K follows best friends Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny as they ring in the new millennium at a house party, where electronics come to life after the stroke of midnight and go on a killing spree.

Kyle Mooney's Y2K Features The Heaviest Practical Effects Suit Weta Has Ever Made For A Movie
Image
Kyle Mooney's new movie "Y2K" delivers a sci-fi horror concept that is so stunningly simple that you won't believe that no one's taken advantage of it on this scale until now. It's New Year's Eve on 1999, and a big high school party is about to be interrupted by the sudden appearance of techno monsters formed by the timely technology of the time, ranging from big tube TVs and computer monitors to Jeep Power Wheels and VCRs. They're all controlled by a computer hive-mind that intends to turn humans into microchip-controlled drones who will do their bidding.

While Jaeden Martell (the recent "It" movies), Julian Dennison ("Deadpool 2" and "Hunt for the Wilderpeople") and Rachel Zegler (Steven Spielberg's vibrant "West Side Story") are the stars of this film who face this darkly hilarious techno apocalypse, don't sleep on the incredible practical effects from Wētā Workshop that bring these creatures to life.

Y2K Director Kyle Mooney, Co-Writer Evan Winter And Stars Jaeden Martell & Julian Dennison Go Back To 1999 [Exclusive Interview]
Image
This weekend brings Kyle Mooney's feature directorial debut "Y2K" to theaters, after the horror comedy made its debut at the South by Southwest film festival earlier in 2024 (read our review). Taking cues from high school party movies like "Can't Hardly Wait" and mixing them with late '90s horror movies like "The Faculty" and dated technological thrillers like "Lawnmower Man," the film finds a group of teens facing an apocalyptic scenario in which technological devices like clunky computers, VCRs, Discmans, and Tamagotchis suddenly form into deadly creatures hellbent on taking over society. Basically, it's the worst case scenario that imagines what the world might have been like if Y2K turned out to be a legitimate threat.

At the center of the movie are best friends Eli (Jaeden Martell of "It") and Danny (Julian Dennison of "Deadpool 2"). While both are a bit socially awkward and into their own geeky tendencies,...

Kyle Mooney Still Can’t Believe He’s the First Person to Come Up with a Y2K Disaster Movie
Image
Kyle Mooney never forgot the widespread panic that ensued in 1999 over the Y2K computer crisis that never materialized. As a 15-year-old, he watched the entire world prepare for the possibility that the global computer systems would be unable to process years that started with 20 instead of 19. And while he still recalls the paranoia, his memories of the boring whimper that brought the saga to a close are even clearer.

“For those of us who were alive during Y2K, it was pretty much a letdown,” Mooney said during a recent conversation with IndieWire. “And for me, that was such a bizarre experience. I was pretty much obsessed with it over the course of my life.”

That lifelong obsession was the genesis for “Y2K,” Mooney’s directorial debut that imagines what might have happened if the non-event had actually turned out much, much worse than anyone expected.

In Mooney’s world,...

'Y2K' Director Kyle Mooney Shares Thoughts on AI
Image
Artificial intelligence has been a source of contention of late, to put it mildly, even escalating tensions in Hollywood to the point of an actors' strike just last year. There's a collective sense of dread over the subject and how it will affect (or infect) multiple areas of work, but that technological anxiety is not new. 25 years ago, at the dawn of the new millennium, the so-called "Y2K" panic led to widespread paranoia and fears that technology would simply shut down or turn on us once the clocks struck midnight on January 1, 2000. In reality, nothing of the sort occurred at the time — but what if it did? Said alt-universe notion is the A-story of A24's new horror-comedy Y2K, from co-writer, director, and co-star Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live).

Watch as a seemingly innocent high school graduation party gets brutally terrorized by robots, electronic household appliances and more once the year 2000 officially kicks off.

Y2K Review: A Great Cast Rounds Out This Nostalgic Comedy
Image
Plot: Two high school nobodies make the decision to crash the last major celebration before the new millennium on New Year’s Eve 1999. The night becomes even crazier than they could have ever dreamed when the clock strikes midnight.

Review: As a millennial, I’ve always gotten a kick out of the hysteria surrounding Y2K. The idea of all the computers going haywire simply because of the passing of a date always felt pretty wacky. But the event has never really gotten a proper cinematic telling. Until now. SNL’s Kyle Mooney makes his directorial debut with a film that feels like Small Soldiers on steroids. But if you’re not into nostalgia, then you may have to look elsewhere. Thankfully, nostalgia may as well be my middle name.

Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter provide a pretty fun story about an unexpected group of misfits banded together to take...

‘Y2K’ Director Kyle Mooney Talks Practical Effects and Keeping Audiences on Their Toes [Interviews]
Image
New Year’s Eve felt a bit different in 1999. Not simply because it was a different time but because of the pesky “year 2000 problem” that’s more commonly referred to as Y2K. The world anticipated global computer system failures that would cause the shutdown of technology everywhere, including power. It created a widespread panic that entailed people prepping for an actual apocalypse. Except, once the clock struck midnight, nothing happened. The computers adjusted just fine, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and the world moved on in a blink.

Y2K director/co-writer Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter imagine what could’ve happened had the Y2K bug actually triggered catastrophe, marrying an apocalyptic horror movie with a raucously entertaining teen comedy.

Mooney, a millennial making his directorial feature debut with Y2K, remembers that specific point in time well. He recalls, “I mean, it was just such a disappointment.

John Belushi in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)
Y2K (2024) Movie Review: SNL Graduate Kyle Mooney Underperforms with a Stale Apocalyptic Comedy
John Belushi in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)
From the moment John Belushi first muttered about The Wolverines, “Saturday Night Live” had been a launching pad for America’s burgeoning comedic talent to break away towards their own careers beyond the show. Some have proven more successful in that area than others, but most of that intermittent success has been focused on the same brand of comedic acting that got them noticed in the first place; few SNL alum mark their break from Lorne Michaels with a stint in the director’s chair.

Kyle Mooney, though, seems relatively primed to have made the jump from the live show to being the man behind the camera, as most eyes were moved in his direction by way of his prerecorded, often-cut-for-time skits. Now, two years after his SNL departure, the man whose cringe-comedy made him a defining middle-ground between Andy Samberg and Tim Robinson turns his gift for the awkward towards “Y2K,...

'Y2K' Review: Nostalgia, Zegler, and One Great Scene
Image
Ahh, that delightful AOL Instant Messenger sound effect of a door opening — aka one of your pals signing on to chat — still lives rent-free in some of our brains, doesn't it? And when nostalgic films and TV shows like PEN15 and the recent Didi utilize such landmark computer programs for the sake of storytelling, one doesn't even need to have fully experienced Aim and other throwback then-innovations to appreciate the retro vibes. The new film Y2K joins the nostalgia bandwagon this week, with a title that immediately evokes this, hearkening back to the eve of the millennium and its cultural paranoia. Would all the computers and technology around us shut down all at once? Or worse, attack us?

SNL fan-favorite Kyle Mooney decided to revisit these dated conspiracies and, with the help of co-writer Evan Winter, has brought one in particular to life for a hard R-rated new horror...

Where To Watch Y2K: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
As a horror-comedy spin on the night of New Year's Eve 1999 produced by A24, Y2K offers unique viewing options for audiences in theaters or on streaming. The original disaster comedy tackles the fear that technology would take over due to the Year 2000 problem. Directed by Kyle Mooney based on a script he co-wrote with Evan Winter, the Y2K cast is filled with up-and-coming stars like Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison - as well as a role for Alicia Silverstone. The story follows Martell and Dennison's characters, Eli and Danny, as they go to a party.

The film unfolds as the high schoolers come to learn that the Year 2000 problem is real and incites panic in Y2K's inaccurate 90s culture once machines begin to kill everyone. Y2K's theatrical release is a long time coming, as the movie originally was shown to attendees at South by...

New A24 film Y2K is set to release in theatres nationwide this December
Image
Hey, remember Y2K (Aka “the millenium bug”)? In the months leading up to the year 2000, everybody was in an uproar, believing there would be a complete shutdown of resources upon midnight of December 31 / January 1 of 2000.

In a nutshell, many computer programs were not set up for the change of “19” to “20” that year, and the possibility existed that files would become unreachable, the power grid would shut down, etc.

Of course, there were some technical issues upon the stroke of midnight, but thankfully, nowhere near the disaster that so many people believed was inevitable. Well, A24’s newest film, appropriately called Y2K, uses the panic as the basis for its plot.

Set on December 31, 1999 Y2K stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison Australian rapper the Kid Laroi, Fred Durst and Alicia Silverstone.

Although A24 has become mostly known for its serious horror films such as The Witch, Hereditary, Midsommar and Talk to Me,...

‘Y2K’ trailer: A24 horror comedy throws it back to the turn of the millennium [Watch]
Image
Remember the Y2K scare, when we were afraid that computers wouldn’t be able to process having a 2 in the year instead of a 1, and which would lead to the collapse of society? That didn’t happen, but what if it did? What if the electronics came to life and tried to kill us? That would be phat, wouldn’t it? That’s the premise of “Y2K,” an A24 horror comedy that the distributor released a trailer for on Wednesday.

“Y2K” is the directorial debut of former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Kyle Mooney, who also wrote the script with Evan Winter and appears as a stoner who hangs out with high school kids half his age. The film is set during a New Year’s Eve party which two uncool high school kids (Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison) crash. A24’s ‘Y2K’ Trailer Remixes Bill Clinton in 1990s Montage Promoting Kyle Mooney’s Directorial Debut
Image
The second trailer for A24’s Y2K features a remixed Bill Clinton playing over a 1990s montage of dial-up internet and panic at a 1999 New Year’s Eve party.

“Someone’s on the net,” a panicked Rachel Zegler says at the beginning of the trailer, released Wednesday.

The clip reveals few other details about the upcoming film, which will be the directorial debut of Saturday Night Live‘s Kyle Mooney.

The movie hits theaters Dec. 6, and centers on two high school juniors who find themselves fending for their lives after crashing a New Year’s Eve shindig on the last night of the 20th century. Turn-of-the-century technology appears to take over the party, turning the night potentially deadly, with a computer aboard a remote control car chasing party guests around a living room.

The remixed Clinton soundtrack comes from the former president’s 1999 remarks on Y2K readiness, where...

‘Y2K’ New Trailer: Kyle Mooney’s Directorial Debut Is a Throwback Comedy That Will Have You in Full Meltdown
Image
Remember the paranoia that spread throughout the late ’90s when people believed the world’s entire computer infrastructure would crash once the clock struck midnight on the year 2000? Misinformation around the potential bug caused many to go into panic mode, purchasing bulk supplies of food and water, as well as backup generators, and even withdrawing large sums of money from the bank. Thankfully, no such tech failure came to pass, nuclear warheads were kept in their silos, and the world kept spinning. Nevertheless, for writer/director Kyle Mooney, this potential phenomena has clearly stayed with him, inspiring his directorial debut, “Y2K.”

Set on New Year’s Eve 1999, the sci-fi comedy depicts an alt history in which the Y2K disaster actually did come to pass, albeit in a more grandiose fashion. Rather than simply shutting down the world’s technology, Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter imagine a world in which...
