But in the digital age, the traditional entertainment career ladder has disappeared. For Theo Dumont and Daniel Sol, who have spent a decade organizing the HollyShorts Film Festival, producing their own content was the next career step. “It’s a natural evolution for us,” Dumont told Backstage. Not that they’re entirely greenhorns; Sol produced and starred in the 2009 low-budget indie feature “Night Before the Wedding.” The partners have grown the festival from screenings of about 20 shorts in 2005 to a venue that showcased some 400 short films earlier this year. Now Dumont and Sol are taking similar steps as their attendees—they’ve set up a Kickstarter page and are trying to generate buzz for a production through social media.
