‘Frankenstein’ – Manuel Cinema Revives the Horror Classic as a Unique Live Puppetry Experience
Nia DaCosta
Manual Cinema, the Emmy Award-winning performance collective responsible for the inspired shadow puppetry in Nia DaCosta’s Candyman, have revived Frankenstein as a unique live experience.

More than 500 handmade puppets, actors, live music, and cinematic elements are utilized to bring to life the unexpected story about the beauty and horror of creation. The layered interpretation of the classic novel stitches together the classic Frankenstein tale with the biography of author Mary Shelley, exposing how family, community, and education shape a person.

Manual Cinema’s Frankenstein was conceived by Drew Dir, who then devised the show with Sarah Fornace and Julia Miller. It features original music and sound design by Ben Kauffman and Kyle Vegter.

The show premiered in Chicago in November 2018 before having its New York and international debuts the following year. The New York Times hailed it as “an exquisitely stylized, self-contained reality,” while Daily Beast raved that it’s “impossible to look away.
