Halsey on Learning From Sydney Sweeney on ‘Americana’ and Creating Her Own New Series: “Really Cool to Be Part of a Project I Don’t Face”
Image
Halsey has been making the transition from musician to movie star in recent years — including with a breakout role in 2024’s MaXXXine — but the first major project she shot is just now making its way to theaters.

Americana — a modern western from writer-director Tony Tost which follows several people as their lives violently intertwine while fighting over an expensive Native American ghost shirt— was shot in 2022, premiered at SXSW in 2023 and is finally heading to this big screen this month.

“I’d been waiting a really long time, I’d been really cautiously picky about what I was going to do for my first project for getting into this world, into this space,” Halsey told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Sunday. “Tony reached out and he was so personable and so talented and I just really connected with the script and the character. Image
Sydney Sweeney wears a headband with her dress while attending the premiere of her new movie Americana held at Desert 5 Spot on Sunday night (August 3) in Los Angeles.

The 27-year-old actress was joined on the carpet by her co-stars Halsey, who donned a blue hairdo, and Simon Rex, as well as writer/director Tony Tost.

Here’s a synopsis: A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western. After the artifact falls onto the black market, a shy waitress with big dreams (Sweeney) teams up with a lovelorn military veteran (Paul Walter Hauser) to gain possession of it, putting them in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal (Eric Dane) working on behalf of a Western antiquities dealer (Rex). Americana Review: Halsey Shines in a Darkly Comic Crime Saga
Image
A story is often only as good as the object everyone wants. In Tony Tost’s Americana, that object is a Lakota Ghost Shirt, an artifact of immense spiritual weight said to protect its wearer from harm. When it is stolen in a violent home invasion, it ceases to be a mere museum piece and becomes a narrative engine, activating the quiet desperation of every character it encounters.

Set against the bleak backdrop of modern South Dakota, the film tracks the shirt’s chaotic journey as it passes through the hands of people who see it not as a sacred relic, but as a solution. For some, it represents a half-million-dollar payday. For others, it is the key to reclaiming a stolen heritage. For one woman, it is simply a ticket to a life she can call her own.

The film’s tension is born from this fundamental conflict: what...

Rian Johnson teases Poker Face season 3 could come back much sooner
Image
When Poker Face season 2 premiered on Peacock in May 2025, there had been a two-and-a-half year wait since the mystery of the week series' debut season. The delay can be traced back to the postponements that occurred in the wake of the dual Hollywood labor strikes, but even without setbacks from strikes, two-year waits have become far too normal in the streaming world.

However, should Peacock opt to renew the fan-favorite Natasha Lyonne mystery-comedy for a third season, creator Rian Johnson has seemingly indicated that there won't be as long as a wait in between seasons. Obviously, there are a lot of factors at play that need to come together for Poker Face season 3 to land on our screeners by sometime next year, including a renewal.

Poker Face season 3 isn't confirmed yet, but could still happen

As of July 15, less than a week after the season 2 finale aired on Peacock, the...

‘Poker Face’ Boss Rian Johnson Delighted in That Finale Cliffhanger Tease: “Peacock Was a Little Nervous”
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from the season two finale of Poker Face, “The End of the Road.”]

Hopefully, you kept watching after Poker Face nearly ended its second season with a big “To Be Continued.” Creator Rian Johnson was confident viewers would stick with the episode — but he says Peacock was a little nervous.

“I was just giggling in the edit room getting the timing of that exactly right with Natasha,” Johnson, who created, writes and directs on the Natasha Lyonne-starring series, tells The Hollywood Reporter of the finale’s cliffhanger gag. “Peacock was a little nervous. They were like, ‘Do you have to put To Be Continued?’ I was like, ‘I think it will be fine.’ It’s another great harkening back to the commercial break cuts that I grew up with [on TV shows] as a kid. A car would go off the ramp at the Universal backlot, the show would freeze frame and it would be like, ‘How are...

‘Poker Face’ Boss Unpacks Charlie’s Heartbreaking Season 2 Finale, Shares Hopes for Potential Season 3
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Poker Face” Season 2, Episode 12.

Just as quickly as Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale settled into the bustling metropolis of New York City in “Poker Face,” the Season 2 finale ripped away any shred of normalcy as Charlie headed back on the road again, fearing for her life even more than the first time.

After settling into her Brooklyn crash pad (thanks to Steve Buscemi’s Good Buddy) and developing a friendship with a local named Alex (Patti Harrison), things were looking pretty good for Charlie — that is, until she found out she’s at the center of a plot from notorious assassin the Iguana to find and kill Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Perlman). Charlie and Alex thought they had evaded the Iguana, until Charlie realizes that her friend was actually Iguana all along, who had befriended Charlie so she could lead her to Hasp and kill her.

Poker Face season 2 finale recap and ending explained
Image
The Poker Face season 2 finale is titled "The End of the Road". However, it’s hard to imagine the end of the road for Poker Face will be anytime soon.

With Poker Face's 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, it’s impossible to think the series won’t be picked up for a season 3. Not only that, but it’s in Peacock’s Top 10 list of TV Shows. Season 2 has had an intense group of A-list stars, so you can only imagine what showrunner Tony Tost has up his sleeves next for the tale of Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne).

This article contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of “Poker Face.”

Diving into the season finale, Charlie and Alex can be seen speeding off in her Baracuda as they figure out their next plan of action. After Charlie turns her cell on, her good friend, Luca (Simon Helberg), calls and reveals she was right again.

‘Poker Face’s Patti Harrison On Playing Her “Dream Role” In Season 2, That “Devastating” Finale & What’s Next For Alex & Charlie
Image
Spoilers: This post contains details about the Poker Face, Season 2 finale episode ‘The End of the Road’

With Natasha Lyonne‘s Charlie Cale on the run once again in the Season 2 finale of Poker Face, here’s hoping Patti Harrison‘s Alex isn’t far behind.

Ahead of Thursday’s episode ‘The End of the Road’, the comedian spoke to Deadline about taking on the “dream role” of the mysterious Alex, at first introduced as a quirky friend and potential Watson for the troubled protagonist Charlie’s Sherlock, but revealed in the finale to be the Moriarty of the story.

“I think that was an important part too, is just not that my character be so goofy and silly, ’cause I think they trusted me a lot to imbue it with humor, but that wasn’t my directive going in,” explained Harrison. “I wanted to kind of figure out what...

‘Poker Face’ Boss on That Finale Shocker, Subverting Charlie’s Lie-Detection and Setting Up a Potential Season 3
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The End of the Road,” Season 2, Episode 12 of “Poker Face,” now streaming on Peacock.

Every episode leading up to the Season 2 finale of “Poker Face” — Rian Johnson’s murder-of-the-week love letter to “Columbo” — has relied on Charlie Cale’s (Natasha Lyonne) unrivaled ability to sniff out lies to solve any mystery.

But in a surprising turn of events in the latest episode, “The End of the Road,” Charlie finds herself outsmarted at her own game by close friend Alex (Patti Harrison), who has been the Iguana killer all along. Alex managed to bypass Charlie’s detection by training herself to swallow all her natural impulses when lying, subverting the template of the show and what fans have come to expect.

Season 2 showrunner Tony Tost explains that the twist was pitched by co-executive producer Laura Deeley in the writers’ room. “She came in with...

Poker Face Showrunner Shares The Wacky Episode Idea Too 'Cartoony' For The Show [Exclusive Interview]
Image
This article contains spoilers for season 2 of "Poker Face."

After a somewhat hit-or-miss first season, "Poker Face" made a surprising choice in season 2.

Instead of doubling down on the serialized elements it established in season 1, the series largely wrapped up that storyline quickly and promptly kicked it to the curb, giving Natasha Lyonne's Charlie Cale character the freedom to wander across the country without having to constantly look over her shoulder. The result? The show feels like it came into its own, unburdened by the narrative restrictions of Charlie caught in a web of rival gang families and finally able to focus on the purest version of the how-catch-em formula as she bounces from city to city. Unfortunately, I thought everything kinda falls off a cliff in the last two episodes and seems to set up a third season that feels like it might undo all of that and...

'Poker Face' Season 3? Renewal Status Revealed for Peacock TV Show
Image
Poker Face Season 2 is coming to an end today on Peacock.

The finale episode is entitled “The End of the Road.” In the episode, while on the run from a notorious hitman, Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) begins to question everything she believed in.

Naturally, fans are on the edge of their seat about whether there will be a renewal for Season 3.

Keep reading to find out more…

Poker Face has not yet been renewed for Season 3, or cancelled by Peacock.

Season 2 showrunner Tony Tost commented on what his dream guest stars would be for a potential Season 3.

“Well, for me personally, Cissy Spacey, who is on my T-shirt… Getting someone like Paul Walter Hauser, Jon Bernthal. There’s a bevy of interesting people to get… Sam Rockwell, Benicio Del Toro would be interesting. Yeah, there are a lot of people, anyone with a very unique perspective on the craft or on life,...

Sydney Sweeney Unveils Summer Baskin-Robbins Collaboration
Image
Sydney Sweeney has collaborated with Baskin-Robbins to create a special summer menu.

The Sweet on Sydney offerings feature what the ice cream chain claims is her go-to order, Sydney’s Signature Scoop (rainbow sherbet with gummy bears on top in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone with sprinkles), as well as Sydney’s Signature Fizz (rainbow sherbet blended with Starry lemon lime soda and topped off with mini gummy bears).

Yum, right?

Unlike her eyebrow-raising recent collaboration with men’s personal hygiene company Dr. Squatch, no, the rainbow sherbet is not infused with her bathwater.

Though that brand partnership seemed aimed at only certain groups of fans, this collaboration can be enjoyed by all.

“Baskin-Robbins has been part of my life for as long as I can remember — it’s where a lot of great memories were made, and I still find myself going back pretty often,” said Sweeney in a release.

Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for “The Big Pump,” Season 2, Episode 10 of “Poker Face,” now streaming on Peacock.

The last time “Poker Face” fans saw Clea DuVall, she played Charlie’s (Natasha Lyonne) estranged sister in the Season 1 finale, which left the future of their relationship uncertain. But in this week’s episode of Season 2, the “Happiest Season” director returns behind the camera for an adrenaline-filled murder mystery set in a gym.

“My approach in working with actors really comes from having the privilege to work with as many incredible directors as I have. I’ve seen so many brilliant, talented directors do things very well, and I’ve also seen less experienced directors do things that didn’t work as well,” DuVall tells Variety. “I can sort of pick and choose what I find helpful, and bring that to the table when working with actors.”

‘Poker Face’ EP & Showrunner Tony Tost On His Season 2 Episode “Hometown Hero” & Not Overdirecting Natasha Lyonne On The Page – Crew Call Podcast
Image
During the early part of Tony Tost’s writing career, he was a poet and an academic. He found his way to TV writing thanks to his pal, True Detective co-creator Nic Pizzolatto. He tells us about his journey and offers up advice to aspiring writers on today’s Crew Call podcast.

The Poker Face showrunner gets a written-by credit for Season 2’s episode 5, “Hometown Hero.” Poker Face creator Rian Johnson wanted to set an episode of the Natasha Lyonne-starring slacker clairvoyant series in the world of minor-league baseball.

“Hometown Hero” follows a used-to-be-a-contender 100mph pitcher Russ Waddell (Simon Rex), whose losing streak nearly puts his minor-league team out of business. After he’s given notice by the coach, he bands with his teammates to bet on their losing streak to make an enormous sum of money. A new firecracker pitcher enters the scene. There’s blackmail and murder,...

Charlie Takes on a Pint-Sized and Potent Villain in ‘Poker Face’ Episode 6 Clip — Watch
Image
Some of the killers in Rian Johnson’s “Poker Face” feel remorse — but not the latest. In an exclusive clip shared with IndieWire from the upcoming Season 2, Episode 6, “Sloppy Joseph,” Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) faces off with eight-year-old Stephanie Pearce (Eva Jade Halford) — who couldn’t disagree more that it’s lonely at the top.

The clip shows Stephanie confronting Charlie in the bathroom, where Charlie begs her to reconsider what she’s done. “If you keep this up, you’re not gonna have a lot of friends,” Charlie says, hoping to appeal to the child’s need to be liked.

But Stephanie doesn’t need to be liked. What she needs, it would seem, are gold stars — but before laying out her ambitions unequivocally, she puts on a little performance. She turns away from Charlie, seemingly out of shame while she pretends to cry. “Maybe I say I don...

Don't expect Poker Face to change its mystery of the week format
Image
Poker Face proudly harkens back to an older-fashioned style of television show with a mystery of the week. The Peacock show sees Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie travel across the USA and get herself caught up in murderous situations. Her natural talent for spotting a liar helps her work out the murderer, whether she wants to or not.

In the era of big arcs and complicated plots, Poker Face is committed to the classic format. Every episode features a new location, a new cast and everything nearly gets resolved by the end of the episode.

Season 1 of Poker Face had an overarching theme after Charlie got herself in trouble with the Vegas mafia. This lingering plot is resolved in the first three episodes of season 2. The rest of the series is a true week-to-week offering, with Charlie visiting baseball teams, schools, and food delivery services.

Poker Face Showrunner Answers 1 Big Question Fans Have About Charlie
Image
The main character of Rian Johnson's acclaimed comedy-drama series, Poker Face, hardly plays a bad hand when solving murder mysteries and snuffing out suspicious characters. However, with questions over whether Charlie Cale gambles too much with her unconventional investigating style, the show's executive producer addresses why she approaches things the way she does.

Speaking with TVLine, showrunner Tony Tost addressed the lingering question of why Charlie regularly puts herself in harm's way, confronting killers and figuring out how they committed crimes with no weapons or protection to back her up. However, Tost equates the approach of Natasha Lyonne's central protagonist to "a dog with a bone," suggesting that while she's taking serious risks, she's unfazed and confident her method works. “I think it’s a feature of her character,” he said. "The metaphor we use is: She’s a dog with a bone. She cares so much about...

Poker Face EP Answers Our Burning Question: Why Does Charlie Confront Murderers Alone and Unarmed?
Image
We always enjoy watching Charlie Cale crack a case on Poker Face… but we worry for her safety, too.

Each week on the Natasha Lyonne-led murder mystery (Season 2 is currently streaming on Peacock), the human lie detector played by Lyonne manages to solve a murder and bring the prime suspect to justice. But in doing so, Charlie often puts herself in harm’s way, confronting the killer and explaining how she figured out they did it in great detail… all by herself, without any weapon or backup to protect her. (This week, she came face-to-face with a murderous baseball...

Why ‘Poker Face’ Has Gone Full Murder-of-the-Week for Season 2
Image
The fifth episode of Poker Face season two brings Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale to the dugout of a minor league baseball team, where she investigates suspected foul play in the death of a player who was killed by a fast ball to the head from a faulty old pitching machine.

Tony Tost, who took over as showrunner for the second season, wrote the episode, “Hometown Hero,” and says it was a world that creator Rian Johnson wanted to play in for the Peacock murder-mystery’s return. The episode also solidifies Poker Face as a true week-to-week offering. After resolving the lingering plot from season one in the third episode (the first three episodes released together at launch), the fourth episode took Charlie down to the Florida Panhandle — for a death involving cocaine and an alligator (starring Gaby Hoffmann and Kumail Nanjiani) — before landing her in this week’s predicament...

Image
Exclusive: Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale is back on the case in Season 2 of Peacock’s Poker Face, which made a promising return to the streamer earlier this month, per preliminary Nielsen data.

Season 2 launched with three new episodes on May 8, boosting the series to become a Top 5 original title across all of streaming, based on minutes viewed for the week of May 5.

Exact data isn’t available just yet, though it will be in a few weeks when Nielsen releases its streaming report for that interval. Deadline also understands that Season 2 of Poker Face is the No. 2 streaming original based on average audience for the week of May 5.

This is a strong start for the sophomore season of Poker Face, which is still debuting new episodes each Thursday. The series is a mystery-of-the-week series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying.

Natasha Lyonne reveals Poker Face season 2's unexpected voice cameo you might have missed
Image
If you have been watching Poker Face season 2, you might have recognized Charlie’s “Good Buddy.” The man Natasha Lyonne’s amateur sleuth Charlie talks to on her Cb radio is none other than Fargo actor Steve Buscemi.

As Lyonne told TVLine, her and Buscemi go way back as native New Yorkers: “He cut me out of a movie he directed called Animal Factory back in 1998. I played ‘Girlfriend.’ We joke about it to this day.” Lyonne says the team behind the show initially approached Buscemi to direct an episode of Poker Face, and while he was unavailable to work on the sophomore season, “he was available to be Good Buddy.”

Buscemi is one of many famous actors who appear throughout season 2 of Poker Face. Cynthia Erivo, Giancarlo Esposito, Katie Holmes, and John Mulaney are just some of the numerous guest stars who will pop up throughout Charlie’s adventures.

‘Poker Face’ Showrunner Tony Tost Talks Throwing Out the Rule Book for Season 2 in Big Episode 3 Twist
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Poker Face” Season 2, Episode 3.

Any “Poker Face” fan would have expected the second installment of the Rian Johnson-created series to play out in a similar way to last season: Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale travels across the country in her Plymouth Barracuda solving murders before the finale sees her come face-to-face with the current antagonist.

But, instead, “Poker Face” threw out the rule book and eliminated the threat looming over Charlie from mob boss Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Perlman) in just the third episode of the season with an FBI string gone wrong that puts Beatrix into witness protection and Charlie without a hit on her head.

“When we started talking about different options of a … through-line, I don’t think any of them really excited us creatively,” showrunner Tony Tost told TheWrap. “We’re under that assumption that you have this big bad...

Natasha Lyonne, Rian Johnson Reveal Where ‘Poker Face’ Season 2 Goes Now
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the three-episode premiere of Poker Face season two.]

Poker Face is back and after watching the first three episodes of season two, you may be wondering if creator-writer-director Rian Johnson just resolved the show’s over-arching hook.

The first season of the murder-mystery-of-the-week show starring writer-director Natasha Lyonne introduced Lyonne’s detective protagonist, Charlie Cale, as a fugitive with an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying, which helps her solve murders that she stumbles upon. As she hit the road in her Plymouth Barracuda trying to outrun the mob boss trying to kill her (played by Ron Perlman) and his henchman (Benjamin Bratt), she solved a new murder mystery each episode. The season functioned in a standalone format, but had an over-arching big bad tying it all together, and the cliffhanger season one finale put new mob boss Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Perlman) on Charlie’s trail.

That finale set up a second...

Rian Johnson Says Balancing ‘Poker Face’ Season 2 Production With ‘Knives Out 3’ Was More Stressful Than Last Time
Image
It’s no doubt that “Knives Out” director Rian Johnson has a jam-packed schedule — but production on his latest projects, “Knives Out 3” and “Poker Face” Season 2, coincided exactly, creating a conflict that he said was “more stressful” than last time around.

“This time was more stressful because … the two production periods lined up with each other, whereas with the last one, I was in post-production on ‘Glass Onion’ when we were in the writers’ room for ‘Poker Face,’ so I could just go back and forth in our office between the edit and ‘Poker Face,'” Johnson told TheWrap.

However, “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” which is slated to debut later in 2025, was shooting in London while the sophomore season of “Poker Face” was filming in New York. While series creator, EP, writer and director Johnson said he was “just as involved” with Season 2 during the writers’ room and production,...

Steve Buscemi's Mystery Poker Face Season 2 Character & Relationship With Charlie Explained By Showrunner
Image
Poker Face season 2 showrunner Tony Tost explains Steve Buscemi's character and the dynamic he shares with Charlie. Created by Rian Johnson, the Peacock crime comedy show stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a woman with the ability to detect when others are lying who travels from place to place, investigating crimes. In Poker Face season 2, which has been met with positive reviews since its three-episode premiere on May 8, Buscemi plays a voice-only role as a trucker known only as "Good Buddy," who Charlie speaks with over the Cb radio in her car.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Tost dives deeper into Good Buddy and his role in the larger Poker Face season 2, confirming that the character won't end up being a major part of any storyline moving forward. Instead, the showrunner explains, viewers should think of Good Buddy as more of a reassuring constant in Charlie's life. Check...

Poker Face Showrunner Reveals His Dream Season 3 Guest Stars
Image
Peacock's Poker Face is all about its famous weekly guest stars, and its showrunner knows exactly who he would want to include in a hypothetical Season 3.

Poker Face follows Natasha Lyonne's Charlie Cale, a former gambler who has an uncanny natural ability to see when anyone is lying, to an almost supernatural extent. After getting herself in trouble, Charlie's on the run from the law, where, as she travels across the country, she solves consistent murders (played by a variety of guest stars) that would otherwise go unchecked without someone with her abilities to notice them.

Tony Tost, showrunner for Poker Face Season 2, sat down with The Direct's Russ Milheim to discuss the series and how these new weekly mysteries have evolved from Season 1.

Poker Face Season 2 TV Review: Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson reunite for more mystery-of-the-week shenanigans
Image
Plot: Poker Face is a mystery-of-the-week series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.

Review: While Rian Johnson revived the whodunit on the big screen with Knives Out and the Netflix sequel Glass Onion, his charmingly retro small-screen series Poker Face has truly proven its worth in the tried-and-true genre. Echoing classic shows like Columbo and The Rockford Files, Poker Face‘s first season centered on Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), who solved mysteries while on the run from gangsters looking to kill her. The overarching narrative of the first season was engaging, but the standalone mysteries boasting famous guest stars turned Poker Face into must-watch programming. After a two-year wait, Poker Face is back with another ten mysteries,...
