Cool Stuff: Tom Holkenborg's Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Score Surges Onto Vinyl
Image
"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" just made its way to theaters, but MonsterVerse fans who want to keep the kaiju goodness going will want to listen up. The folks at Waxwork Records have announced a special release of the film's soundtrack on vinyl, which you can pre-order as we speak. Much like the film itself, it is colorful and overflowing with monster madness. Oh, and it comes with a 12x12 art print.

The "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" original motion pictures soundtrack features all 23 tracks from the score for the film. The original music was composed by Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie Xl, who previously created music for Zack Snyder's "Justice League" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." Holkenborg teamed up with composer Antonio Di Iorio ("Godzilla vs Kong") to craft an appropriately epic score for director Adam Wingard's kaiju brawl. Holkenborg had this to say about it:...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Review – Insanely Absurd Yet Incessantly Entertaining
Image
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire releases in theaters March 29, 2024.

I hold a special place in my heart for Godzilla (2014) by Gareth Edwards, which remains my favorite film of the MonsterVerse saga. Kong: Skull Island has managed to improve the overall opinion over the years, unlike Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which continues to be a major disappointment even after a couple of rewatches. In 2021, Adam Wingard found the ideal balance between the titanic battles, human storylines, and just the right amount of openly absurd fun in Godzilla vs. Kong. Therefore, excitement levels were high for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Former adversaries, Godzilla and Kong must join forces to fight a mysterious common enemy that emerges from the depths of the Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, the human characters focus on exploring the unknown origins of the Titans, in addition to providing small but valuable assistance in the impending battles.

Polanski honored at Krakow Film & Music Fest

Pictures from the 2016 Krakow Fmf, which featured live performances of the scores from Sicario and Drive.

Now in its ninth year, Krakow’s Film and Music Festival (Fmf) brought together film composers and music professionals for a series of masterclasses and concerts in the heart of the city’s historic old town. This year’s festival ran from May 24-30, with an additional concert concluding its musical showcase on May 31.

The festival kicked off with a special distinction award for Roman Polanski, who was honoured by the Polish Filmmakers Association (Spf) for his contribution to Polish cinema. The 82-year-old Krakow native, who survived the Nazi’s Second World War takeover of Poland, leapt to the stage to receive his accolade and said: “I’m just a boy from Krakow, I never thought I would get this far.”

Polanski is back in the headlines this week after the Polish government said it will appeal a court’s decision...

Krakow’s Film and Music Festival composes itself
Jeff Beal, Symphony Hall, Boston
A celebration of film and television music was once again at the heart of Krakow’s Film and Music Festival, now in its eighth year.

Running from May 27-31, the event brought together more than 58 international composers - including Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Mon Roi), Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones), Jeff Beal (House of Cards), John Lunn (Downton Abbey) and Trevor Morris (The Borgias, The Tudors) – for a culmination of performances, panels and master classes.

“Composers are not often given the attention they deserve,” said Artistic Director Robert Piaskowski. “So we wanted to create a space that presents film music as art, and where audiences can come and appreciate a score’s symphonic sounds.”

Piaskowski is not alone in his interests. The festival now aligns itself as the start of the season, with similar musical events taking place in Tenerife and Cordoba in July and Vienna and Gent (that also hosts the World Soundtrack Awards) in October...
