Film Review: Mallari (2023) by Derick Cabrido
Image
“Mallari” attempts for a certain kind of innovation with a narrative structure freshly lifted off anime-like, parallel-world, time-travel story telling. Leveraging in the fantastic, three generations of stories overlap one another convincingly to tell a ghost story that haunts the titular family for decades. But all of these attempts at novelty to reimagine the lore of a historically documented serial killer from the colonial Philippines? The film seems to be capturing through its creativity an attitude as old as its narrative itself.

The marvel of Mallari’s technical achievements cannot be ignored. Derrick Cabrido’s years of handling horror films is matched by Enrico Santos‘ veteran penmanship and Pao Orendain‘s textured images that shape the scenes with enough darkness to fill the scares. Santos’ script in particular exhibits a really good pulse in pacing sequences. Their attempt to...

Under Parallel Skies (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Why Did Iris Left Parin?
Win Metawin Opas-Iamkajorn and Janella Salvador in Under Parallel Skies (2024)
Under Parallel Skies is a 2024 film directed and written by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo. The film stars Metawin Opas-Iamkajorn as Parin, Kerem Bürsin, Janella Salvador as Iris, and Marjorie Lorico, and Lee Mariano in supporting roles. The movie follows the story of Parin, a boy who arrives in Hong Kong to find his mother but ends up finding the love of his life, someone who changed how he used to see the world.

Under Parallel Skies (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: How Do Parin & Iris Met?

Parin’s story is a rough one, and just one look at him says it all: life has taken a toll. He’s unkempt, his beard’s grown out, his hair’s messy, and his clothes are far from fresh—as if he’s stopped caring altogether. In short, Parin is a shadow of the man he used to be. Back in the day, though, Parin was the guy everyone noticed.

‘Camomile Lawn’ Novelist’s Estate Snapped Up By Ilp

International Literary Properties has acquired the estate of British The Camomile Lawn novelist Mary Wesley. Channel 4’s adaptation of The Camomile Lawn is Channel 4’s second most successful drama series of all time, according to Ilp, and the deal will see Ilp manage the rights to Wesley’s work. Having famously published her first novel aged 70, she also wrote the likes of Jumping the Queue, Harnessing Peacocks and The Vacillations of Poppy Carew, all of which have previously been adapted for film and TV. “Mary was an incredible woman, an extraordinary author and a very close member of my family,” said Wesley’s daughter in law, the author Xinran Xue. Deadline revealed last year that Ilp, which holds rights to the literary estates of Langston Hughes and Evelyn Waugh, had headed on a West Coast charm offensive and snapped up the estate of Somerset Maugham.
