Kaley Cuoco's Dark Comedy Series With 79% Rt Score's Future Revealed 5 Months After Season 2
Image
All good stories must come to an end. Peacock has trimmed its original programming, canceling Based on a True Story after two seasons.

Per Deadline, despite earning largely positive reviews from critics, Based on a True Story will not return for a third season on Peacock. Created by Craig Rosenberg, the dark comedy thriller series is a satire of the true crime genre with elements loosely inspired by true events. Both seasons follow married couple Ava and Nathan Bartlett, played by Cuoco and Chris Messina respectively, as they capitalize on America's growing obsession with true crime by launching a podcast with serial killer Matt Pierce (Tom Bateman). The second, and now final, season of eight episodes was released in its entirety on Peacock back in November 2024.

Based on a True Story Season 2 picked up three months into parenthood for Ava and Nathan. As they focus on taking care of her family,...

The Fate of Peacock’s ‘Based on a True Story’ Has Been Decided
Image
Peacock has officially reached the bookend for its series, Based on a True Story, as Variety reports the streamer has slapped the title with a cancellation. The second season came out all the way back in November, so fans have been waiting months for the final verdict, but it’s not the one they were hoping for. The news is a bit shocking as both seasons of the Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina-led dark comedy drama performed well with audiences and critics alike, earning positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Showing potential for growth, the second season even added 7 points to its score on the online platform, moving from a Season 1 76% critics’ approval rating to Season 2’s 83%. Still, for one reason or another, NBCUniversal’s streamer decided to close the book and move on from Based on a True Story.

‘Based on a True Story,’ ‘Mr. Throwback’ Canceled at Peacock (Exclusive)
Image
The comedies “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback” have been canceled at Peacock, Variety has learned exclusively. “Based on a True Story” had debuted its second season in November 2024, while “Mr. Throwback” aired its one and only season at the NBCUniversal streamer in August 2024.

Peacock does not release regular viewership information, so gauging the exact audience of either show is difficult, but both received solid reviews upon their release.

“Based on a True” story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a financially struggling couple who decide to start a true crime podcast to investigate whether or not their plumber is in fact a serial killer. The cast also included Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The show originally premiered in 2023.

Craig Rosenberg created the series and served as an executive producer. Annie Weisman served as writer, showrunner, and an executive producer on Season 2 with Jaclyn Moore also writing and executive producing.

Based On A True Story Cast & Character Guide
Image
The cast of Peacock's Based on a True Story gives stellar performances, particularly the two leads playing characters involved in a true-crime podcast. The comedy thriller tells the story of a couple who decide to directly profit from a serial killer in their area by starting a podcast about him. To make the show unique, the podcasters choose to interview the murderer with the agreement that he does not kill anyone else while doing the podcast. The series forces viewers to examine where the line is between entertainment and exploitation.

Despite its heavy central question, Based on a True Story maintains a lighthearted tone throughout the show. The actors help achieve this balance between serious thriller and dark comedy approaches to the story. One of the main actors, Kaley Cuoco, performs well in her role due to her own passion for true-crime content (via Glamour). Along with Cuoco, the cast...

Based on a True Story Season 2 TV Review: Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina are back for more murderous shenanigans
Image
Plot: Season two finds new parents Ava and Nathan Bartlett three months into parenthood. Focused on taking care of her family, Ava is determined to resist her true crime obsession and return to work as a real estate agent while Nathan trains private tennis clients. But a series of new murders pulls her back in – is Matt behind the slayings? Is Tory, now entangled in a relationship with Matt, in danger? For a while, life is good — Ava’s TikTok habit and her new friend Drew provide a welcome distraction, and Nathan’s all in on reigniting his tennis career as well as his friendship with Matt — until danger comes knocking, literally.

Review: When the first season of Based on a True Story dropped last year on Peacock, I was not impressed with the story of a couple who started their own true-crime podcast with input from a real serial killer.

Image
Quick Links What Happened to Ruby in 'Based on a True Story' Season 1? Who Really Killed Ruby in 'Based on a True Story'? It's a Twist No One Saw Coming in 'Based on a True Story'

Based on a True Story is a delightful dark comedy thriller on Peacock that fits right in with the latest influx of modern whodunit shows that poke fun at societal obsession with both true crime and podcasting. It combines these loves into one hilarious story about a couple expecting their first child, dealing with life challenges, and finding opportunities in the most unlikely of places. They have discovered the identity of a local serial killer, and it just so happens to be someone they know.

Rather than turn him in, Ava (Kaley Cuoco), who figured out the mystery thanks to her amateur sleuthing skills, thinks they should capitalize on it.

Based On A True Story's Chris Messina On Nathan's Turn To The Dark Side In Season 2 & Playing A Misanthrope
Image
Nathan's desire for a break from life is taking him down a dark path in Based on a True Story season 2. Played by Juror #2 star Chris Messina, Nathan was introduced in season 1 of the Peacock dark comedy thriller as the husband to Kaley Cuoco's true crime-obsessed Ava and a former tennis star who, after a career-ending injury, has turned to teaching tennis. Season 1 saw Ava and Nathan determine their plumber Matt was the local serial killer, The Westside Ripper, and make a deal with him that as long as he doesn't kill anymore and makes a podcast with them, they won't turn him in.

Based on a True Story season 2 picks up three months after the season 1 cliffhanger finale, in which Ava and Nathan were caught by Aaron Staton's Simon covering up the murder of Ruby. Having given birth to their son and cleared of involvement in Ruby's death,...

Everything to Remember from ‘Based on a True Story’ Season 1
Image
After Season 1’s abrupt cliffhanger, there was no doubt that Peacock’s “Based on a True Story” was angling for a second season, and it’s the increasingly rare show to turn one around in roughly a year once that light turned green.

The first season of Craig Rosenberg’s dark comedy introduced Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina), a married couple living in Los Angeles who accidentally cross paths with active serial killer Matt (Tom Bateman) and decide to start a true crime podcast with him. As the specter of the West Side Ripper grows, so too does the podcast’s notoriety, and Matt sinks his claws into the lives of two people in way over their heads and dancing with the devil.

Also they all did drugs and made out with each other. But that was just a dream sequence.

With Season 2 dropping on November 21, here’s...

New Parents Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina Are Still True-Crime Obsessives in ‘Based on a True Story’ Season 2 Trailer
Image
Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman and Liana Liberato are back with more murder and mayhem in Based on a True Story season two. And this time, there’s a new pint-sized accessory in tow.

Based on a True Story is based on (or partly inspired by) a true story. The series, which satirizes true-crime tropes, introduced Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who crossed paths with an infamous serial killer, “The Westside Ripper,” in Los Angeles. Ava, a pregnant true-crime obsessive, suggested making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their marital rut.

Now, after the events of season one, season two opens with Ava and Nathan as new parents who attempt to now get out of the true-crime game — but, as the trailer shows, those aspirations are fleeting. The season opens on Ava and Nathan struggling to balance parenthood with waking away from their obsession.

‘Based on a True Story’ Season 2 trailer: The Westside Ripper is back… but is it Matt?
Image
Being a parent is killer — and in more ways than one for the Bartletts on “Based on a True Story.”

On Thursday, Peacock dropped the trailer for Season 2 of the comedic thriller, which finds Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan (Chris Messina) three months into parenthood and seemingly taking a hiatus from their podcast. Tory (Liana Liberato), Ava’s sister, gets engaged to Matt (Tom Bateman), who is apparently “healing” from his murdering ways. Or is he? The Westside Ripper is killing again, but Matt insists it’s not him.

“If you’re not killing these people, then who is?” Ava asks.

“That’s what I want to know,” he says.

The series follows Ava, a real estate agent and Nathan, a tennis pro-turned-coach, who suspect Tom, their plumber, is the Westside Ripper serial killer and decide to start a podcast with him to exploit America’s true crime obsession and solve their money problems.

Sherri Chung (‘Based on a True Story’ composer) on creating music that ‘lies within the nuance’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“It’s the first comedic thriller I’ve ever done. A lot of the projects that I’ve done in the past have been very black and white; they’re heroic, they’re drama, they’re rom-com, and you always know who the antagonist is and you know who you’re supposed to be rooting for,” declares “Based on a True Story” composer Sherri Chung. For our recent webchat she adds, “This was a story where we don’t know if should we be rooting for this guy, is this guy as bad as he said, as bad as we think he is, is he as good as we think he is? The challenge musically was that you don’t want to give it away. You don’t want to telegraph what the audience doesn’t know yet. You don’t want to ruin the fun of them trying to...

Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 16 Review: One Way or Another
Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell in Good Trouble (2019)
The return of Callie Adams-Foster makes everything better.

Dare we say it, but Good Trouble Season 5 Episode 16 felt the most like a vintage installment for this series in quite some time and tapped into the Good Trouble nostalgia and endearing vibe of Good Trouble Season 1.

Callie's return felt as well-placed as Isabella's, and all of the plot points of the hour were compelling and moved things forward.

From the performances and pacing to the subject matter and character focus, "One Way or Another" was one of the strongest hours of Good Trouble Season 5, combining the season's darker tones with some of the compelling approaches to life's issues that were so prominent for the series in its prime.

There wasn't a single miss with storylines during this hour.

The series still remembers Lyric, and instead of using her as Gael's wingbaby regarding his growing attraction and budding potential relationship with Jay,...

Cruel Summer and Good Trouble Cancellations Signal the End Is Near for Freeform
Troian Bellisario, Sasha Pieterse, Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, and Shay Mitchell in Pretty Little Liars (2010)
What a difference a couple of years makes.

At one point, Freeform was the go-to destination for younger viewers, with shows like Pretty Little Liars giving the bigger networks a run for their money in key demographics.

These days, it seems the network is more interested in experimenting with cost-effective programming, and sadly, the shows that have been so successful up to now will be a distant memory.

The recent announcement that Grown-ish would wrap with the second half of its current season set the stage for change.

Over the weekend, official word broke that Cruel Summer and Good Trouble -- the network's last two scripted offerings -- would not be returning for additional seasons.

Good Trouble, a spinoff of the cabler's legacy title,...

Ava, a true crime obsessive, hits on the idea of making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their rut.

The cast also includes Tom Bateman,...

‘Based On A True Story’ Review: A Murder-Mystery Comedy With Enough Meat To Get Hooked On
Image
First of all, let me just applaud the top-notch product placement. I want a Pixel 7 after this. And I am saying that when I am about to buy a new Samsung in a few weeks or so. I’m talking about Peacock’s Based on a True Story, which can very well be passed off as an eight-hour-long Google Pixel commercial. I am obviously kidding, but I also can’t help but appreciate how seamlessly they have blended the latest Pixel device into the narrative and made a show out of it.

We live in a time when we have an abundance of choices in terms of what we want to watch. We have the privilege to drop something and move on to the next piece of content if the former fails to hold on to us from the get-go. That is why if a show or movie manages to hook the audience,...

Field of Dreams Creator Reveals Why Peacock Scrapped the TV Series Reboot
Image
After Mike Schur's Field of Dreams got the go-ahead from Peacock in August 2021, the streamer has decided not to move forward with the series.

Speaking to Vulture, Schur says Peacock scrapped the project even though it was deep into pre-production. "They just changed their mind," he explained. "They didn't want to spend the money anymore." He noted that the only legacy the defunct project will leave behind is a ballpark. "We built a baseball stadium in a cornfield in Iowa that's still sitting there as we speak."

Based on a True Story Review
Image
Given the success of Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, it's not surprising that another comedy series is taking on true-crime podcasting, although Peacock's Based on a True Story takes a much darker approach to the subject matter. Based on a True Story places the main characters in a no-win situation that shifts from amusingly morbid to unpleasantly nasty without the range of quirky characters that makes Only Murders in the Building so enjoyable to watch. There's no mystery to solve on Based on a True Story, just two terrible people desperately exploiting the victims of a psychopath.

Those two terrible people are married couple Ava (Kaley Cuoco) and Nathan Bartlett (Chris Messina), who feel frustrated and unfulfilled in their personal and professional lives. Real estate agent Ava is stuck with second-rate listings and clients giving her the runaround, while former professional tennis player Nathan is feeling sidelined in...
