This Day That Year: When Vivek Oberoi Played Pm Narendra Modi
Image
In a new edition of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha revisits the one where Vivek Oberoi played Pm Narendra Modi, which released in 2019.

In Omung Kumar’s Pm Narendra Modi, which clocks six years on May 24, Vivek Oberoi handles the principal role with a certain amount of flair and decency. His eyes speak more than a thousand words. Lamentably this is a film that believes in the power of verbal lamp-posts. Every self-glorifying thought that this celluloid holographic Modi feels must have a verbal counterpoint. Every rhetoric and retort, every aphorism that our prime minister has uttered or not uttered (the line between fact and fiction in this bio-pic is non-existent) is given the status of a large hoarding.

In one sequence, he communicates metaphysical ideas with his spiritual guru (played by Suresh Oberoi), which ends with the Guru declaring his shishya ready for politics.

For a brief interlude,...

‘Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5’ Review: Raoul’s Peck’s Vital Film Shows How We’re Living In A ‘1984’-Style Dystopia
Image
When I was growing up, the lessons of 1984 – the dystopian novel by George Orwell – were all thought to pertain to the Soviet Union. Big Brother was Josef Stalin – controlling the thoughts of his people, punishing dissenters.

If that had been correct, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and freeing of its similarly totalitarian satellite regimes would have rendered the novel irrelevant to our present times. 1984 would have been a mere artifact reflecting outdated concerns of an earlier era marked by sinister eradication of personal liberties. Turns out that’s not the case.

Raoul Peck’s vital documentary Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5, which premiered tonight at the Cannes Film Festival, makes it startlingly clear the degree to which we are living in Orwellian times. The parallels between the nightmare of 1984 – where Big Brother dictates every facet of life – and Trump’s America have not been properly acknowledged. This film does that.

Image
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s first foray into international security policy hasn’t been going very well — and that’s outside of him reportedly inviting a Pizzagate conspiracy theorist overseas with him.

According to a Thursday report from The Washington Post, in preparation for his first trip abroad as the Trump administration’s new defense secretary, Hegseth’s team extended an invitation to Jack Posobiec — a far-right conspiracy theorist who has promoted white nationalist ideology throughout his career — to join his entourage. Posobiec was one of the principal figures behind the promotion of Pizzagate,...

‘Troubling Escalation’: AP Says Trump White House Again Barred Reporter As Punishment For Editorial Decision Over Gulf Of Mexico
Image
The Associated Press said that a reporter was barred from attending a press conference between Donald Trump and India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, the third day that the White House has targeted the news organization for declining to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

Unlike the past two days, when AP’s reporter was restricted from smaller events in the Oval Office, the news organization said that today the prohibition was on access to the press conference, which is typically open to all credentialed media.

Julie Pace, the executive editor of the AP, said, “The decision by the White House to block an AP reporter from an open press conference with President Trump and Prime Minister Modi is a deeply troubling escalation of the administration’s continued efforts to punish The Associated Press for its editorial decisions.

“It is a plain violation of the First Amendment,...

Rupali Ganguly Speaks On continuing Anupama and Her Entry Into Politics
Image
Rupali Ganguly whose Anupama has made her a household name, is in the news for all the wrong reasons. While she laughs off rumours of her exit from her signature serial, Rupali is very pleased with her entry into the world of politics.

You recently joined the Bharatiya Janta Party?

Yes, it was a very big deal for me. You know, meeting Pm Modiji and then joining the Bjp was also a big moment for me.

Would you say that was the highlight of the year for you?

Anupama doing well throughout the year was also a highlight. My family is happy, healthy that is again one of the biggest highlights. But on the downside, losing my mother-in-law that was the only thing last year that was the downside I can’t sum it up as a perfect year for me because when you lose an elder, when you lose a mother,...

Truth Social: On the Still-Human Films of Sohrab Hura

The Lost Head and the Bird.“We are excited to announce insulin is free now.” At first glance, this November 2022 Twitter post from @EliLillyandCo appeared to be a legitimate announcement from the pharmaceutical company; the account’s profile featured an icon of Eli Lilly and Company’s logo and a blue check mark that, until the previous day, signified the account had been formally verified by the platform’s dedicated staff. But in the hands of new owner Elon Musk, who completed his acquisition of the platform two weeks earlier, Twitter’s verification process underwent significant modification. Suddenly, verification was available to anyone with an authenticated phone number and a willingness to pay $8 a month for the platform’s Premium plan. Twitter, soon to be rebranded as X, inevitably descended into chaos, rife with impersonators and misinformation. Eli Lilly’s stock share price fell by 4.37 percent in one day. What,...

Political Landscape Heats Up: Delhi Elections and Key National Updates
Image
Bollywood Mascot: With the Delhi elections looming, political leaders are intensifying their efforts to sway public opinion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged the nation through his regular ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast, speaking directly to citizens on key issues affecting their daily lives. The ongoing rivalry between Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (Aap) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp) has reached new heights, with both parties pushing their agendas to secure voter support.

As the countdown to elections continues, Delhi’s residents remain caught in a whirlwind of promises from Congress, Bjp, and Aap. Kejriwal, ever vocal about his party’s agenda of change and reform, has been tirelessly campaigning for an inclusive and corruption-free future for the city. On the other hand, Bjp has aimed to counter Kejriwal’s populist appeal by emphasizing national security, development, and governance.

The Congress, struggling to regain its foothold, has also launched a vigorous campaign,...

6 Years Of Aditya Dhar’s Uri
Image
Uri, which completes six years in January 11, brings the blood of cross-border tension to a boil but avoids a spillover. There is a rush of patriotic pride in the product—and why should there not be?—but it is reined in, curbed, and never allowed to spill over in a gush of irrepressible jingoism. If you want to see soldiers dancing around a bonfire, singing about how much they love their country and how much they miss their loved ones, then you’ve got the wrong war film.

Yes, these soldiers love their country. But family comes first. And when Vihaan’s brother-in-law is killed in a vivid recreation of that real-life murderous attack at the Uri army base, Vihaan channels his personal loss to seek revenge on behalf of the country. It may not be the most patriotic of purposes. But it gives a certain disingenuous believability to the mission.

Image
Pawan Kalyan Balakrishna Feud (Photo Credit – Instagram)

We have heard about many superficial fan wars, but the war between the Nandamuris and the Konidelas is out in the open; both are reputed families with a legacy of films that have shaped the way the Telugu film industry looks today, especially with Ntr and Chiranjeevi being the most celebrated actors of all time.

Throwback to when the Legend Balaya had commented, saying, “Who is Pawan Kaylan?” I don’t know if he sparked controversy among the two families and their fans. The whole controversy began in early 2018 when a journalist asked Balakrishna a political question about Pawan Kalyan. “Pawan Kalyan? Who is he? I don’t know him,” said Balakrishna.

The matter further heightened when Pawan Kalyan appeared to take a dig at Balakrishna in a public meeting. While addressing a public rally, the Deputy Cm of Andhra said, “I won...
