Spark Review: Learning the Rules of Connection
Image
There is a universal quest for connection, a desire to find someone who sees you. For Aaron, a hopeful romantic weary from a string of fleeting encounters, that search feels like a game he keeps losing. Spark drops us right into his world as a whimsical birthday scavenger hunt pairs him with the handsome but emotionally distant Trevor.

An undeniable charge passes between them, but their first night together triggers an unexpected glitch in reality: Aaron wakes up to find he is living the same day over and over. The film immediately poses a question that feels like a classic narrative puzzle.

The goal isn’t just to escape the loop, like clearing a level. Instead, Aaron must use this repeating cycle to decipher the enigma that is Trevor and, more importantly, to confront the self-defeating patterns that have defined his own search for love.

The Player, The Puzzle, and...

Inside Out 2024 Review: Spark Has Spark
Image
Directed by Nicholas Giuricich, Spark is an interesting twist on a classic timeloop theme. Aaron (Theo Germaine) finds himself reliving the same day: being woken up by his friend and roommate Dani (Vico Ortiz), going on a birthday scavenger hunt with a handsome stranger (Danell Leyva), sleeping with said stranger, repeat. What seems to trigger the cycle is sex. Once Aaron gets his bearings, sometimes they make it to the actual birthday party the scavenger hunt was the prelude to, sometimes they go for food the next day. What remains constant is Aaron's efforts to maximize the timeloop, finding out the likes and dislikes of Trevor to seduce him more. The beginning was a bit cliche. The middle was riveting. It is hard for the...

Image
Stars: Danell Leyva, Victoria Vertuga, Jamie Bernadette, Torrey B. Lawrence | Written and Directed by Eric Williford

At the start of Cold Blows the Wind, Dean and Tasha look in the trunk of their car and are surprised to find a badly injured man. They’re surprised not because he’s there, but because they thought they killed him when Tasha hit him while driving drunk. Realising he isn’t dead Tasha wants to get him to a hospital while Dean is worried once what happens gets out they’ll go to jail. To avoid that he takes the only logical course of action and stabs the man to death. Tasha reluctantly helps him bury the body.

Writer/director Eric Williford and cinematographer Marc Martinez give us a striking burial scene full of moonlight and mist as the couple squabble while digging the grave. And as they do, someone is watching them,...

Gymnasts Gone Wild! Danell Leyva and Oleg Verniaiev Strip Down for the Crowds During the Olympics
Danell Leyva
Prior to competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics, the U.S. men's gymnastics team suggested they compete shirtless and show of their ripped bodies to gain new fans and increase viewership for their events. And while they ultimately had to keep their tight uniforms on during the official team competition, at least one member has taken it off! Two time silver medalist Danell Leyva went rogue and stripped down during a Rio routine - much to the delight of fans watching. The striptease to shirtlessness happened at the non-competitive gymnastics gala Thursday night. After a trio of consecutive diomidovs on the parallel bars,...

5 Things to Know About Star Gymnast Danell Leyva
Danell Leyva
Talk about earning your spot! Cuban-American gymnast Danell Leyva was the only U.S. male athlete to bring home a medal from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but when the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio came around, he didn't qualify to be on the team. Instead, the 24-year-old star gymnast was named an alternate. Then in an unfortunate plot twist, gymnast John Orozco suffered a knee injury during practice about a month ago, and that's when Leyva took his place in the five-man squad, according to NBC.  The gymnast reclaimed his spot and won two silver medals in both horizontal and high bars.  "Things didn't happen the way I expected, and it was unfortunate the way I was named...

Danell Leyva
It's been a good day for U.S. gymnast Danell Leyva. The 24-year-old scored silver in the men's parallel bar final with a score of 15.900. About an hour and a half later, he nabbed another silver in the horizontal bar final, scoring 15.500. With tears in his eyes, Leyva ran over to horizontal bar bronze medalist Nile Wilson of Great Britain to give him a hug before kissing the "USA" emblem on his jacket and accepting his medal. The double victory is especially sweet for Leyva who originally made the 2016 men's Olympic team as an alternate. When frontrunner John Orozco was...

U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team Fails to Medal in Disappointing Team Competition
The U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team had a disappointing afternoon competing in the all-around team final in the Rio Olympics on Monday. The five gymnasts - Sam Mikulak, Jake Dalton, Alex Naddour, Chris Brooks and Danell Leyva - never really got their rhythm as they competed, and ended up placing 5th in the competition. From the beginning, it was clear that Japan was the team to beat. (Their captain, "King" Kohei Uchimura, is the reigning Olympic all-around champion and thought of as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.) They dominated the competition, easily winning the gold. The Russian...
