The film’s events are set in motion by a disastrous blind date on the part of Emma (Hall) at an upscale Chicago restaurant. The beautiful twenty-something subsequently strikes up an essential conversation with Jack (Kelsey), a happily married, middle-aged and very successful businessman who is seated at another table, having just finished up a business dinner. Emma and Jack thereafter stumble into an intense one-night stand that turns into something more complicated and destructive than either of them could have expected.

Edwards will direct from a script by Frederick Mensch (HBO Films’ Nightingale), also co-producing along with producers Phil Lee, Darryl Manuel and David Kelsey and Heather Sederquist’s Big Wheel Entertainment.

David Oyelowo in Nightingale (2014)
'Nightingale' Review: David Oyelowo Goes 'Psycho' in Uneven HBO Character Study
David Oyelowo in Nightingale (2014)
Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters — these are the relationships given preferential treatment in the film world. But when those pairings are switched, danger lurks around the corner. Be it horror films like "Sleepwalkers" and "Psycho" or lighter fare like "The Graduate" and "Throw Momma From the Train," strong bonds between mothers and sons or fathers and daughters can lead to complications later on for both parties. "Nightingale" — the new film acquired by HBO from director Elliott Lester ("Blitz") and first-time screenwriter Frederick Mensch — fits snugly into this latter grouping, as half a film filled with volatile relieved repression and half without any new ground to cover. Read More: 'Selma' Star David Oyelowo Gets Frank About Race in Hollywood It's fitting, really, that only one of two offending parties is shown throughout the 82-minute feature. "Nightingale" is a one-man show, with 2014 breakout...

Nightingale Review
HBO Films’ Nightingale, starring (and only starring) the incomparable David Oyelowo, sometimes feels like a Broadway adaptation of Psycho. Claustrophobically shot and tensely scripted, the drama is a one-man show with an unreliable narrator and long pauses so thick with dread that they make your hairs stand on end. Even at 82 minutes, the film is an endurance test, exercising excruciating caution in how it teases out (but never directly provides) answers to the unnerving enigma that is Oyelowo’s Norman Bates-esque protagonist, named Peter.

It’s clear from the outset that something’s not quite right in the residence that Peter says he shares with his apparently domineering mother, who remains suspiciously out of sight as Peter gleefully rejoices to himself about a “change in my circumstances.” The house’s silence is deafening, and Peter frantically engages himself in conversation so as not to feel it, using a video...

On Yon Bloomy Spray: Oyelowo Dominates Lester’s One Set Drama

Director Elliott Lester, best known for his 2011 Jason Statham offering, Blitz, adapts firstime screenwriter Frederick Mensch’s character study Nightingale for the big screen, to surprisingly compelling effect. Cinched into the cozy house of its main character, we witness first hand the unraveling of a mind after a dastard deed. As we’re never really allowed to travel outside of these confines, it sometimes feels like the filmed version of a play. Slight visual texturing aside, everything takes a backseat to a masterful performance from David Oyelowo, the driving force of every single minute of film, a space never shared with any other physical actor. It’s a meaty, multifaceted role, something nearly extinct in modern climes where multiple intersections of storylines stomp all over any given narrative.

Peter Snowden (Oyelowo) is an incredibly lonely and persistently overwrought person.

The Risky 1-Actor Wonder of HBO’s ‘Nightingale’
When screenwriter Frederick Mensch stepped on the set of “Nightingale,” the first of his scripts ever to be optioned, his leading man David Oyelowo (“Selma”) wouldn’t look at him. “He was emphatically not interested in meeting me,” says Mensch. “He did not want to shake my hand. He didn’t want me in his sightline. He didn’t want me there, frankly.” The producers were apologetic, not knowing how to explain Oyelowo’s behavior so the writer wouldn’t feel offended. “But I was the last person in the world they needed to apologize to, because more than anyone else I knew what David was going through.” Oyelowo was, at the moment, immersed in Mensch’s character, a man gradually but viciously torn apart by his own solitude. That particular day, the actor was shooting one of the film’s most emotionally wrought scenes, in which protagonist Peter Snowden...

David Oyelowo on Commanding the Screen Solo for 90 Minutes in HBO’s ‘Nightingale’
David Oyelowo in Nightingale (2014)
Before he became Martin Luther King, Jr. in “Selma,” David Oyelowo took on one of his most challenging roles yet, as a man descending into madness in “Nightingale.” It was his first lead role in a film, and it required him to carry the drama solo for the entire 90 minute duration. “I knew it would be very exposing, I knew if it failed it would be glaringly obvious whose fault it was,” the actor told TheWrap. “Nightingale,” which premieres Friday on HBO, was written by Frederick Mensch and directed by Elliot Lester. Oyelowo plays a disturbed war veteran who suffers from.

Watch: David Oyelowo Stars in HBO's 'Nightingale' Official Trailer
There's no escaping your own mind. HBO has debuted a trailer for their upcoming premiere Nightingale, a feature film starring David Oyelowo in a one-man drama directed by Elliott Lester. Oyelowo plays a mentally unbalanced war veteran who becomes so obsessed with an impending dinner appointment with it old friend that it drives him mad. Many will agree that Oyelowo should've received an Oscar nomination for his performance in Selma last year, but he's a very talented guy and I'm sure he'll prove himself again and again, with roles like this one showing how great he is. I'm curious to check this out - give the trailer a look. Here's the official trailer for Elliott Lester's Nightingale, direct from HBO's YouTube: A lonely war veteran psychologically unravels ahead of an old friend's impending visit. Nightingale is the latest film from commercials director Elliot Lester, of the action film Blitz previously.

New Nightingale Trailer Gives a Peek At David Oyelowo’s Commanding Performance
Nightingale is a one-man play come to life, as David Oyelowo (Selma) portrays a war veteran who becomes a prisoner of his own mind, and unravels completely over the course of the film's 80 minute run. This bold filmic concept also has a great story behind it, as it was conceived of by first-time writer Frederick Mensch, who submitted it to TheBlacklist.com, where it caught the attention of Josh Weinstock. Now, directed by Elliott Lester and produced by Brad Pitt, Nightingale comes to HBO starring the fantastic David Oyelowo. You're living the dream, Mensch. HBO describes the film as "a searing story of solitude and isolation [that] offers a poignant look at how life has failed one man." The new trailer gives some indication of those depths, but all that is known for sure is that Oyelowo's performance is sure to be a tour de force. When watching the trailer for Nightingale,...

David Oyelowo is a one-man-show in HBO’s ‘Nightingale’ teaser
David Oyelowo had a monster breakout year in 2014, appearing in A Most Violent Year, Interstellar, and getting snubbed for a much deserved Oscar nomination for his fiery work in Selma. Clearly someone has taken notice of his immense strengths as an actor, as he is now set to appear in the HBO film Nightingale. In it, Oyelowo plays “a lonely war veteran [who] psychologically unravels ahead of an old friend’s impending visit.”

The only catch is, Oyelowo spends the entire film alone cooped up in his house. It’s a one-man-show, a full on acting display. Nightingale is directed by Elliott Lester, written by first time writer Frederick Mensch, and produced by the team behind 12 Years a Slave and Selma. While this first teaser released by HBO on Friday doesn’t give much by way of the plot, it certainly hints at Oyelowo’s range, and what looks like a slight period vibe.

If there’s one thing that Oyelowo’s show-stopping turn in Ava DuVernay’s Selma proved, it’s that he can draw from an endless well of emotional resources. We look forward to seeing him commandeer another substantial character.

'Nightingale': Laff Review
Elliott Lester
Director Elliott Lester and actor David Oyelowo took on an uncommon challenge with Nightingale, Frederick Mensch’s one-character screenplay tracing the disastrous delusions of a fractured mind. In the wrong hands, the movie would have been thuddingly stagy or a relentless downer. But its depiction of a man undone by mental illness is no horror trip into misery; what makes the disturbing story gripping, beyond Oyelowo’s spellbinding performance, is its humor, defining compassion and incisive imagery. A nightmare painted in fauve-bright colors, the feature is a live-action expressionist canvas with a fascinating portrait at its center. Lester’s third
