After more than a decade of demonic encounters, exorcisms and box office dominance, The Conjuring franchise is preparing to close the case on its most enduring characters. The Conjuring: The Last Rites will see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return for one final appearance as Ed and Lorraine Warren, bringing the curtain down on a series that has helped redefine mainstream horror since its debut in 2013.
Directed by Michael Chaves, The Last Rites takes place in 1986, several years after the Warrens’ retirement. When the Smurl family in Pennsylvania finds themselves terrorised by a malevolent presence, Ed and Lorraine are drawn back into the shadows for one last investigation. While previous entries often centred around isolated hauntings, this instalment is being framed as a more introspective reckoning for the couple, delving into their legacy, faith and the emotional cost of a life spent confronting darkness.
The film will also expand the Warren family circle.

Just as “My Beautiful Laundrette” launched a little-known English actor named Daniel Day-Lewis, the London-set “Unicorns” spotlights up-and-coming talent Ben Hardy (whose minor roles in “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” don’t begin to suggest his potential). But “Unicorns” and “Laundrette” have more in common than just a compelling lead performer: Forty years after Stephen Frears’ cross-cultural queer romance, neither homophobia nor xenophobia has much abated in the U.K. That makes it tricky to predict quite where the attraction felt by Luke (Hardy), a rugged white boy from Essex, toward a South Asian drag queen (Jason Patel) will take us.
Co-directors Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd’s scrappy drama shows enormous heart, but it’s the lead actors and their disparate identities that distinguish an otherwise familiar LGBT-themed indie. Hardy has big blue eyes and a boyish-looking face, which balance out Luke’s brutish body language. He’s introduced having coarse,...

The final trailer has dropped for the last Conjuring film, and it sees the Warrens face a familiar demon.
Following the first trailer, which was released in May, Warner Bros. released the new and final trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites on Thursday. The fourth Conjuring film follows Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as they take on the Smurl case, which involved a family that was tormented by a demon for more than a decade, inspired by a true story.
But in this trailer, we find out that the demon was one the Warrens previously encountered. “There’s something in the attic. Ed, there’s an evil here. Something I’ve felt before,” Lorraine says.
“This thing in your house is a demon. It’s the first one that we’ve ever encountered,” Lorraine says to the family before later saying to Ed, “We were young. We were scared.

Directed by Michael Chaves, who also worked on the previous movie, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Last Rites follows the famous ghost hunting couple Lorraine and Ed Warren, played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.
The story is set in 1986 and connects to an early case from their careers. The Conjuring film franchise is set to come to an end with the fourth installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which Warner Bros. has scheduled for a theatrical release on September 5th in North America (September 3rd internationally) – and with those dates now just slightly over a month away, a full trailer for the film has dropped online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Coming our way from New Line Cinema, The Safran Company, and Atomic Monster, this is the ninth entry in the overall Conjuring Universe. Entertainment Weekly recently shared that the film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens have retired from the exorcist business, largely due to Ed’s heart attack, the one sustained during the demonic happenings of the third film. They still hit the university circuit, presenting talks at various schools, but even those opportunities are drying up.

“The Conjuring: Last Rites” is ready to scare you silly.
The fourth — and apparently final — film in the mainline “Conjuring” series and the first since 2021’s “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” arrives in theaters on Sept. 5. And New Line Cinema has just released a new trailer that will give you the willies. Watch it below.
In “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” which, like the previous film is directed by Michael Chaves, church-going ghost hunters Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) face a diabolical evil that is connected to an investigation from early in their career. The story, set in 1986, is meant to wrap up the mainline “Conjuring” series but not totally close the book on the franchise. And the movie, judging by the trailer, really feels like a 1980s horror movie – in particular Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg’s immortal “Poltergeist.”

For a film named “Unicorns,” color is noticeably absent at first. Luke (Ben Hardy) lives in a world of gray, where cloudy skies and towering blocks of concrete threaten to crush him completely. So too does the responsibility of raising a five-year-old son alone after his ex ran out. Not even a casual hook-up in a grubby field behind his Essex council estate frees him of that cramped, confined feeling, especially when the woman he’s just shagged cooly blows him off.
That all changes when Luke takes a wrong turn in an Indian restaurant one day and ends up in a Gaysian club night. Upon pushing that door open, strobe lights flood his monochromatic existence with neon colors that pulsate and glitter on stage where Aysha (Jason Patel) is performing. It’s almost like that unforgettable moment in “The Wizard of Oz” when Dorothy’s world transforms to color,...

When Luke (Ben Hardy), a mechanic and single father, stumbles into an Asian nightclub after an encounter with a woman who only sees him as a one-night stand, he meets the beautiful Aysha, a performer in the club. Luke is mesmerized; Aysha (Jason Patel) seems to wink at him. The next thing we know, they’re outside kissing – their connection electric and palpable. What Luke doesn’t initially realize is that he’s looking at Ashiq’s queer drag queen persona. The confusion when he does leads him to run away.
But Aysha doesn’t let Luke off so easily. Having lost her driver as a result of the kiss with Luke, she can’t get to gigs. So she tracks Luke down where he works, and makes him a deal: he drives her to gigs, and Aysha gives him a cut of her earnings. Luke remains reluctant. He still...

With the likes of James Gunn’s Superman, Universal's How to Train Your Dragon remake, the Gareth Edwards-helmed Jurassic World Rebirth, and much more dominating the global box office, it can be difficult for the smaller titles to reach an audience. With that in mind, the queer British drama Unicorns is worth better representation against the big-hitters ahead of its upcoming Friday, July 18, debut in US theaters. The film released in the UK last year, with its official debut at the Toronto International Film Festival coming way back in 2023.
Ahead of its release, Unicorns boasts a near-perfect 93% Rotten Tomatoes score from 28 reviews to date, one of the highest scores of any movie making its US theatrical release this year. The movie, directed by James Krishna Floyd and Sally El Hosaini and featuring newcomer Jason Patel, stars an X-Men: Apocalypse alum, Ben Hardy, as single father Luke Tilson, who...

It’s not often a film makes its debut with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, but Dave Franco and Alison Brie’s Together has done just that. Premiering at Sundance, this genre-bending horror flick has already stirred buzz with its blend of sci-fi, horror, and relationship troubles, all wrapped in a very indie, very chaotic package.
Meanwhile, the heavyweight horror franchise The Conjuring is gearing up for its next installment, Last Rites, but oddly still lacks a rating despite being just months from its release. Here’s how things are stacking up so far!

Though The Conjuring Universe will continue with "Phase 2", September's The Conjuring: Last Rites is being marketed as the final instalment in the main series of movies that began back in 2013 with James Wan's original supernatural shocker.
This time, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are convinced to come out of retirement to look into the infamous Smurl family haunting.
"It is one of the more Googleable ones," producer Peter Safran tells EW. "It really fit the bill for us, being able to lean into something that audiences could go and Google after the movie. 'Oh! They really did have that many children.' 'Oh! They really were this age, and the grandparents really were there.' All of that stuff has always been meaningful to us."
"It's the end of the story with Patrick and Vera as Ed and Lorraine," he adds. "It doesn't...

The Warrens are back for their last case.
Warner Bros. released the first official trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites on Thursday, which marks the fourth and final Conjuring movie. However, it’s not necessarily the last in the franchise.
This Conjuring film, like the others, is inspired by the real-life case files of paranormal investigators and couple, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). This time, it follows the 1986 Smurl case, a family who was tormented by a demon for more than a decade.
“Every case is different. Every family is different. Once we start, there is no going back. Anything can happen. And most likely, anything will,” Ed says in the trailer.
Lorraine hints at this one being the most dangerous as she says “something’s different” to Ed. At the end of the trailer, a demon says to Lorraine: “We’ve been waiting so patiently so patiently for you,...

Up until this week, we didn’t have any plot info on The Conjuring: Last Rites, but Entertainment Weekly was finally able to draw some information out of the filmmakers. They shared that the film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens have retired from the exorcist business, largely due to Ed’s heart attack, the one sustained during the demonic happenings of the third film. They still hit the university circuit, presenting talks at various schools, but even those opportunities are drying up.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have one final case to crack in the iconic “The Conjuring” franchise. The paranormal investigating duo, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, first appeared onscreen in 2013; now 12 years and a slew of spinoff films later, the original “The Conjuring” will close out with “The Conjuring: The Last Rites.”
Michael Chaves returns to direct “The Last Rites.” In total, the franchise has three “Conjuring” films, three “Annabelle” features, two “Nun” movies, and “The Curse of La Llorona.” Chaves helmed “La Llorona,” “The Nun II,” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.” A “Conjuring” series is in development at Max as well.
“The Last Rites” is set in the mid-1980s when the Warrens were retired. However, the couple returns for one last case involving the Smurl family. The Warrens most famously investigated the 1976 hauntings in Amityville, New York, which inspired the “Amityville Horror” franchise.
