Image

James Gunn's DC Universe is well aware of the potential that live-action series have. The Dcu already has many announced shows in different stages of development, with Peacemaker season 2 being the franchise's first live-action series to debut, set for a 2025 release. With some shows being more fantastical while others are more grounded,...

Stargirl: What Was Your Favorite Fight in 'The Melee at the Mahkent House'?
Image
This week’s DC’s Stargirl — its fifth-to-least episode ever! — could not go without proper mention, given the major developments and multiple fights that took place, plus one wonderfully random DC cameo.

After asking her fellow Jsa members for their blessing, Courtney (played by Bec Bassinger) went to tell Cameron (Hunter Sansone) not only that she is Stargirl (and Rick is Hourman, etc;), but also share the truth behind his father Jordan’s death.

The CW’s ‘Stargirl’ to End with Season 3
Image
The CW is losing another show. “Stargirl,” the channel’s teen superhero drama, will conclude with its ongoing third season, IndieWire has confirmed.

The show, which airs on Wednesdays, premiered its third season in August. The final episode will now premiere on December 7.

The news comes shortly after The CW was acquired by station group Nexstar, in a deal that has been accompanied by several cancellations and endings for many of the network’s series. In May, ahead of the official deal, the channel canceled over half of its scripted programming lineup. Nexstar officially took control in October, with plans to retool the famously unprofitable channel to focus on acquired programming and cheaper original series. The change was accompanied by CEO Mark Pedowitz stepping down from his post after more than a decade at the channel.

Last week, the channel’s “Nancy Drew” announced it would conclude with its next season,...

‘Stargirl’ to End With Season 3 at The CW
Image
“Stargirl” will come to an end at The CW with Season 3, Variety has confirmed.

The DC series is currently airing its third season, with the finale set to air on Dec. 7. This is the latest CW scripted series to announce it will come to an end following Nexstar’s completion of its acquisition of The CW in October. It was most recently announced that “Nancy Drew” would end with its fourth season, with both “The Flash” and “Riverdale” also coming to an end. The CW also canceled many of its scripted originals back in May.

“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” said series creator and executive producer Geoff Johns. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet,...

Image
DC’s Stargirl is coming to an end. The series will conclude with its third season, which is currently airing on The CW.

New episodes will continue to air on Wednesdays through December 7.

The series, created by Geoff Johns, stars Brec Bassinger as high school student Courtney Whitmore, the character that started Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, inspired by his sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash.

Image
Editor's note: The below contains spoilers for Stargirl Season 3.DC’s Stargirl follows Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as her family relocates to Blue Valley, Nebraska, where she stumbles onto a cosmic staff and long-hidden secrets about her step-father Pat (Luke Wilson) and his ties to the superheroes that once made up the Justice Society of America. Now halfway through the third season on The CW, Courtney’s life as Stargirl has been made infinitely more complicated by the attempted rehabilitation of former enemies that, despite their best attempts, aren’t exactly known for handling tense situations in the best ways. But, the most complex aspect of her life currently is her blossoming romance with Cameron Mahkent (Hunter Sansone), something that has been slowly building since the very beginning of the series. And now that we’re finally seeing this dynamic explored? It’s not giving the satisfaction we’ve been waiting for.

Safety Review: Disney+ Tells One Clemson Football Player's Powerful True Story
Image
Safety is the inspirational and life-affirming true story of former Clemson football player, Ray McElrathbey. He defied all odds by becoming the legal guardian of his younger brother, Fahmarr, when their mother was institutionalized for drug addiction. It is a poignant tale of family bonds, and how the team rallied to support them. Safety reminds us of a community's ability to affect positive change on the lives of people in need.

Safety is set in 2006 at Clemson University, South Carolina. Freshman Ray McElrathbey (Jay Reeves) moves into the players dorm and prepares for the grueling season to come. Born in a poverty-stricken Atlanta housing project, Ray earned a full scholarship to play safety at Clemson's premiere football program. He takes eighteen credits while trying to start for the team. Ray recognizes his opportunity and works tirelessly to make the most of it.

‘Safety’ Review: It Takes a Village — or a Team — to Raise a Child in Disney Plus Drama
Image
The customary, adrenaline-juiced montage of football prep and clash comes fast, furious and surprisingly early in the football melodrama “Safety,” streaming on Disney Plus starting Dec. 11. There’s a reason for the hurry, hurry, hurry. Turns out, college ball isn’t the most important goal of this heart-tugger, directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Nick Santora. At least, not in typical gridiron fashion. Not that the college team’s boosters will have cause to belly ache: The screen is awash with their beloved tiger mascot’s paw print and inundated with waves of Clemson orange.

Jay Reeves — in what should be a boost to his nascent career — appeals as the promising football frosh Ray McELrathBey. When Ray arrives at Clemson University in South Carolina, he already faces daunting demands as an earnest student and new recruit in a storied program. And he quickly gets on the wrong side of...

Jay Reeves, Corinne Foxx, Reginald Hudlin and more on Disney’s feel-good drama Safety
Safety (2020)
Safety may not be a Christmas movie as such, but it’s a film made for all the family to enjoy – and what’s more, it’s full of hope and optimism, and what’s more Christmassy than that? The film is launching this weekend on Disney+ and to mark the occasion we took part in a mega virtual junket, where we spoke to leading stars Jay Reeves, Corinne Fox as well as Hunter Sansone and newcomer Thaddeus J. Mixon II. We even had the chance to speak to those behind the lens, chatting to director Reginald Hudlin, with producer Mark Ciardi and the real-life man this entire project was based on, Ray-Ray McElrathbey. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below as we discuss the project at length, and even speak to director Hudlin about his time collaborating with the late, great actor Chadwick Boseman when they worked together on Marshall.

‘Stargirl’ Casts Nick Tarabay & Jonathan Cake As Eclipso & The Shade, Adds Ysa Penarejo As Recurring
Image
Exclusive: DC’s Stargirl has found its Eclipso and The Shade – two of its primary villains for the series’ upcoming Season 2 on the CW. Nick Tarabay (The Expanse) will play the series regular role of Eclipso and Jonathan Cake (The Affair) will recur as The Shade. Additionally Ysa Penarejo (Project Mc2) will recur as an undisclosed DC character.

Stargirl creator/EP Geoff Johns teased the upcoming Eclipso and The Shade DC characters earlier this month at New York Comic Con. “Eclipso is so terrifying. I’ve always loved the character, and he’s a very different antagonist or villain than the [Injustice Society of America],” Johns said. He added that The Shade is “the most powerful of them all, and very threatening because no one knows exactly what he wants.”

Tarabay’s Eclipso is one of the main antagonists set to clash with Stargirl’s Justice Society of America in Season 2. Eclipso is a...

Stargirl Villains: A Guide to the Injustice Society
Image
This article contains Stargirl spoilers.

The Injustice Society has been terrorizing the heroes of the DC Universe for over 70 years. Although they might not be as well known as their more famous counterparts, the Injustice League, and definitely aren’t as criminally insane as their predecessors, Shazam villains the Monster Society of Evil, the members of the Injustice Society have made their stamp on comics history. They’re also about to be discovered by a much wider audience as they’ve been revealed as the dangerous rogues in the new Stargirl TV series, which is airing on both DC Universe and The CW.

Created by Sheldon Mayer and Bob Kanigher, DC’s maniacal supervillain super-team debuted in 1947’s All Star Comics #37. This makes them one of the earliest supervillain teams in comicdom, though they were beaten out by Mister Mind’s Monster Society four years earlier. Seeing as we’re...

Stargirl Scores Season 2 Renewal ... With a Catch!
Luke Wilson and Brec Bassinger in Stargirl (2020)
The CW delivered some good news to Stargirl on Monday:

It has renewed the superhero drama for a second season!

A renewal for the drama series is not surprising, but the latest development is:

Stargirl Season 2 will be exclusive to The CW!

The series started its life as a DC Universe origiinal, with The CW taking broadcast rights to the show and airing it linearly the day after episodes are made available on the streaming service.

It's unclear whether this means there will be a budget cut for the sophomore run, but we likely won't know until the episodes actually hit the air.

Stargirl Season 1, airing Tuesdays at 8/7c, is currently averaging around 1 million total viewers and a 0.23 rating among adults 18-49.

For a show airing on The CW during the summer, those are stellar ratings.

In fact, Stargirl is the network's third most-watched series this season, coming in behind The Flash and Supernatural,...

‘DC’s Stargirl’ Renewed For Season 2 By the CW, Will Migrate From DC Universe To Become Network Original Series
Image
DC’s Stargirl is returning for a second season on the CW. The network has renewed the breakout superhero series starring Brec Bassinger based on the DC characters. Additionally, the network will become the exclusive in-season home to the series next season, with episodes airing on the CW network and streaming the next day on the CW’s free, ad-supported streaming platforms.

This will make DC’s Stargirl, initially a DC Universe original, a CW series. The first season of the series was commissioned by the DC Universe digital subscription service. The CW last fall acquired an exclusive linear window as well as play on the network’s non-linear platforms following its debut on DC Universe. DC’s Stargirl, which has been airing new episodes on the CW a day after their debut on DC Universe, has done well for the linear network and its platform with solid viewership. It...

DC’s Stargirl Release Date Delayed, Episode Info Revealed
Grace VanderWaal in Stargirl (2020)
DC’s Stargirl TV series has seen its release date shift slightly…but not too much! Originally scheduled to premiere on Monday, May 11 on the DC Universe streaming service with a broadcast to follow on the CW on Tuesday, May 12, Stargirl will now arrive on DC Universe a week later, on Monday, May 18 instead, with the CW broadcast to follow on Tuesday, May 19th. The premiere date shift might reflect a need for The CW to fill holes in its schedule since the latter episodes of most of its heavy hitters like The Flash, Supernatural, Supergirl, Batwoman, and others have been temporarily delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the good news is that from that point forward it looks like the rest of the series is right on schedule, and DC Universe and The CW have confirmed air dates and revealed official details about the first five episodes!

Just a quick note,...
