Before F1, Damson Idris Starred In This Underrated Crime Thriller Series On Hulu
Image
Crime dramas might be the most popular genre in all of entertainment right now, especially if you include "true crime" in that distinction, and Americans really love their stories about bad guys almost getting away with it. All of the most popular streamers have sunk unbelievable money into these projects, either by adapting true stories or hiring talented screenwriters to weave tales of harrowing complexity and tabloid scandal alike. While people have been getting their thrills seeing Damson Idris in "F1" lately, his biggest star-making turn so far has been on a critically acclaimed TV crime drama with "Snowfall." Although this show has concluded, fans who missed out the first time might want to uncover what was going on with the Hulu favorite if they're looking for a new crime obsession.

"Snowfall" tells the story of the crack epidemic's rise in Los Angeles, California, through the eyes of Franklin Saint,...

FX's Snowfall Spinoff Is Moving Forward With Major Pilot Update, 2 Years After It Was Announced
Image
FX's Snowfall spinoff is officially moving forward. The original Snowfall series, which ran from 2017 to 2023, explored the rise of the crack cocaine epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles. Created by the late John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron, Snowfall followed Franklin Saint’s (Damson Idris) journey into a burgeoning drug kingpin as he partners with Teddy (Carter Hudson), a CIA operative. The upcoming spinoff will pick up soon after the end of the original series as recovering addict Wanda Bell-Simmons begins her career in West Coast rap in the 1990s while a violent gang war rages on.

Variety has now reported that the Snowfall spinoff has secured a pilot order from FX, marking a significant milestone in its development since it was first announced in 2023. The new series will see Snowfall star Gail Bean reprise her role as Wanda, alongside Isaiah John, who returns as her husband Leon Simmons.

How the ‘Snowfall’ Series Finale Found Its Tearjerking Ending With Three Ad-Libbed Moments From Damson Idris
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of “Snowfall.”

When John Singleton set out to tell the story about the effects of the ’80s cocaine business on Los Angeles, he had a clear vision in mind. He wanted something that came full circle and ultimately led into his directorial debut “Boyz ‘N the Hood,” a film that was set in the ’90s and explored the harsh realities of Black families living in South Central L.A. The movie earned the then 24-year-old his first Oscar nomination, making him the youngest and first Black filmmaker to be nominated for best director.

Damson Idris was a major part of the story of “Snowfall.” Starring as Franklin Saint, Idris carried out Singleton’s tale and vision down to the show’s final scenes. As Franklin’s story came to an end on Wednesday night, fans finally said goodbye to what...

“I want to thank John for being my son, and I want to thank John for listening to me and allowing me to guide his life,” said Singleton’s mother, Sheila Ward-Johnson, in opening remarks during the event, which was one of a series of screenings Sca has held throughout the 2022-2023 academic year as part of a yearlong celebration honoring the Academy Award-nominated director.

‘Snowfall’: Damson Idris & Dave Andron Break Down Series Finale; Tribute John Singleton
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from tonight’s series finale of FX’s Snowfall.

After 6 seasons, FX’s hit drama series Snowfall said its final goodbye tonight, and while most of what transpired was somewhat expected, seeing a promising life end in poverty and despair is absolutely heartbreaking.

Viewers have been on a journey with Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), seeing his highs and lows and cheering him on no matter what he’s gotten himself into. But money and power tend to change people, especially when said fortune comes from criminal activities. In the end, Franklin is left with no family and friends to speak of—except his day one Leon Simmons (Isaiah John)—a shadow of himself resembling his father Alton Williams (Kevin Carroll) at his lowest in Season 1, drunk and destitute.

“His final moments were incredibly challenging. There was a fatherhood connection there, which...

‘Snowfall’ Boss on How “Dramatic Irony” of Ending “Seemed Like It Was Right”
Image
[The following story contains spoilers from the Snowfall series finale “The Struggle.”]

For six seasons, FX’s Snowfall explored how the crack cocaine epidemic contributed to the destruction of a community in South Central Los Angeles. The 1980s-set drama also touched on the intersections between the unfolding drug crisis and larger societal and geopolitical issues like the Iran-Contra affair and Cold War tensions between the CIA and Kgb.

But for its final episode, which aired Wednesday night, the series, co-created by the late John Singleton, ended in some ways as it began, with Damson Idris‘ Franklin Saint walking along a palm tree-lined street.

“For all of the show’s aspirations and its geopolitical reach, it started on the street with a kid who was full of potential in a neighborhood that was just a working-class neighborhood on a summer day,” showrunner Dave Andron tells The Hollywood Reporter of ending the series on Franklin. “And we always knew that the story,...

‘Snowfall’ Ends Its Criminally Underrated TV Run on a High
Image
Everyone involved with Snowfall told us that the series wouldn’t end well. No one consumed by the show’s crescendoing tension could expect anything but tragedy.

Few, if any, outlaws ever got away scot-free. And, even with the boundless capabilities of historical fiction, neither could Damson Idris’s Franklin Saint. Many Snowfall fans anticipated the series concluding with him being whisked away by the CIA, or killed at the hands of his Aunt Louie (Angela Lewis) — if not one of the many people whose lives he’d ruined en...

"Snowfall"'s Cast and Cocreator Are Happy "We Got to End the Story . . . the Way We Wanted To"
Image

"Snowfall"'s reign has come to an end, but the cast and crew are pleased with their series's epic six-season run. "Looking at the totality of it, I'm just so proud that it went the distance," cocreator Dave Andron tells Popsugar while reflecting on the FX show's legacy. "We managed to make something that meant a lot to a lot of people. We got to end the story, with the blessing of FX, the way we wanted to and on our terms. And that's an incredibly special and gratifying thing."

"We got to tell our story from beginning, middle, to end. That makes me extremely proud, grateful, and very excited."

For the past six seasons, "Snowfall" has built the world of the critically acclaimed crime drama, as Damson Idris's Franklin Saint would say, "brick by brick." Set against the backdrop of an '80s South Central LA,...

‘Snowfall’ Star Amin Joseph Talks Directing His ‘Ode to Oso,’ Teases Final Episodes: ‘The Rabbit Got the Gun Now’
Image
This article contains spoilers for “Snowfall” Season 6.

Despite the death of his character in this season of “Snowfall,” Amin Joseph’s job on the series wasn’t quite finished with that. The actor, who starred as uncle Jerome Saint, returned to the FX series to direct this week’s episode, “Ballad of the Bear.”

As “Snowfall” inches closer to the series finale, Gustavo ‘El Oso’ Zapata’s (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) important decision to choose a side takes center stage in this week’s episode. After being approached by the CIA, the DEA and the Kgb to turn on his associates, Oso must figure out whose side he’ll stand on — will he continue to stay loyal to Franklin Saint (Damson Idris) or former agent Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson)? Or will he choose to put his faith behind a third party player, Ruben, the former Cuban national with Russian heritage, working for...

"Snowfall"'s Amin Joseph on Jerome's Tragic Fate in Final Season: "Let's Go Out With a Bang"
Image
It's the end of an era for "Snowfall" fans and, unfortunately, of the overall journeys of some of the series's pivotal characters.

For the past six seasons, the 1980s-set crime drama has followed the dramatic tale of ambitious drug dealer Franklin (Damson Idris) and the epic rise and fall of his drug organization during the crack epidemic in South Central Los Angeles. While we've witnessed Franklin's transformation from college-bound teenager to a ruthless kingpin, one of the biggest shocks in the gritty FX series thus far has been watching his family slowly fall apart - which, in part, has led to another heartbreaking death.

The latest major "Snowfall" character to die - following major losses like Franklin's father Alton and, most recently, his crew member Black Diamond - in the show's sixth and final season is none other than Amin Joseph's beloved Jammin' Jerome Saint, aka Uncle Jerome. In "Snowfall"'s sixth episode,...

Longtime crime fiction novelist and “Snowfall” writer Walter Mosley says John Singleton gave writers everything creatively that they needed to know to continue “Snowfall” before his April 2019 death.

“Snowfall” is set to premiere its sixth and final season on Feb. 22 on FX. The series has become the network’s top-rated show, averaging 4.3 million total viewers across linear, VOD and streaming with its Season 5 debut.

Aside from its stellar cast, the show’s success can easily be attributed to Dave Andron, co-creater, executive producer and writer; Mosley, executive producer and writer; and the late Singleton, who co-created the series alongside Andron and Eric Amadio. Singleton died about three months before show’s Season 3 premiere, and the show has since maintained the essence and meticulousness of Singleton’s creative decisions and guidance.

Snowfall's Gail Bean and Isaiah John Talk Wanda's New Lease on Life, Leon's Determination to Keep Her Clean
Image
As Snowfall fans know, Wanda became hooked on crack while working for Leon. She was touching the substance without gloves and cooking it without a mask, and her subsequent addiction soon turned a vibrant Wanda into a disheveled shell of herself.

Last season, viewers cheered as Leon checked his ex-girlfriend into a rehabilitation program and she overcame her dependency and started rebuilding her life. Now in Season 5, Wanda has gone from a cringy phone-sex job to working for Franklin as a property manager.

Gail Bean Says "Snowfall"'s New Season Will Blow the Rest "Out the Water"
Image
"Snowfall"'s fifth season is already off to a wild start. The 1980s-set crime drama - which premiered on Feb. 23 - picks up 15 months after the season four finale. While a new chapter of wealth and success has begun for Franklin (Damson Idris) and the Saint Family, a disaster is just waiting to happen as the LAPD knocks down their door.

"I feel like in season five, at this point, it's no longer about the family."

Last season of "Snowfall" showed how crucial it is for the Saint family to stick together in times of crisis. But according to Gail Bean - who portrays Wanda in the series - season five is the complete opposite. "I feel like in season five, at this point, it's no longer about the family," she tells Popsugar. "The family is feuding in every area, but I feel like everybody's focus is self-preservation. Their main...

‘Snowfall’: Brandon Jay McLaren, DeVaughn Nixon & Tiffany Lonsdale Join Season 5 Of FX Series
Image
Exclusive: Brandon Jay McLaren (Turner & Hooch) DeVaughn Nixon (Prom) and Tiffany Lonsdale (Siren) are set for heavily recurring roles opposite Damson Idris in the upcoming fifth season of FX drama Snowfall. The series hails from the late Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director John Singleton & Eric Amadio and Dave Andron.

In the most recent fourth season, business is booming. It’s January 1, 1985. Ronald Reagan has won his re-election campaign, proclaiming it is “morning again in America,” but in South Central, Los Angeles, it feels more like the sun is getting low. The demand for crack cocaine is high, and while our crew of dealers led by Franklin Saint (Idris) are benefitting greatly from the rising tide of addiction, they are also starting to become aware of the damage the drug is doing to the people and to the place they love.

McLaren will play Buckley, a detective with the Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums (C.R.A.S.H.) Unit.

Snowfall's Damson Idris Teases the Season 4 Finale and a Tougher, Og Franklin Who's 'Stronger Every Week'
Image
Throughout Snowfall Season 4, a usually dominant Franklin Saint has been, well, less so.

Never-ending conflicts with Skully and Manboy, as well as Franklin’s father Alton oversharing with an investigative reporter and Louie almost dying, left Franklin reeling. Throw in his chronic pain after being shot last season, protecting Leon at all costs and a less available Agent Teddy McDonald, aka Reed, and it seems like Franklin is perpetually a step or two behind.
