Elio's Cute Credits Scene Gives The Movie A Necessary Emotional Payoff
Image
As the people of Earth say: Okay, bye, I love you. This article contains spoilers for "Elio."

Pixar has been making movies since roughly the time I was born, so it's a little odd to engage with debates over whether the studio has become long in the tooth and is now struggling for relevancy in its old age. Sure, the so-called Golden Era from the late '90s to mid 2010s might be receding further and further into the rearview mirror. But many of its movies in the pandemic era have compiled solid reviews, are considered box office hits, and fill an important niche among kids that very few competitors seem interested in doing anymore. "Elio," which I reviewed quite positively for /Film here, likely won't go down as a Major Turning Point™ in any regard. It's a fun, cutesy, and emotionally engaging adventure that appeals to all the nerds...

New Pixar Movie Debuts With One of the Highest Rotten Tomatoes Scores for Recent Disney Animated Movies
Image
It’s been a checkered start to the year with live-action releases of Snow White and Lilo & Stitch, but the next animated movie up on the slate for Disney’s Pixar company is picking up steam ahead of its release this weekend. Elio will touch down in theaters everywhere this Friday, but the review embargo for the film lifted yesterday, and early opinions for the film began pouring in. Elio has now registered enough reviews to be given an 83% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, a score which will be given the “certified fresh” label if it holds up. An audience score won’t be given until the film is playing in theaters, but this critics’ score is higher than Elemental and Lightyear, even if it does fall behind Inside Out 2.

Elio follows the titular character of the same name, who is a space fanatic with an active imagination.

Jameela Jamil Says ‘Elio’ Is a Reminder Young People Are “Capable of Great Things” While “the World Is a Dumpster Fire”
Image
Pixar’s Elio — following a young space-loving boy who finds himself beamed up for an intergalactic adventure — premiered in Los Angeles on Tuesday, with the current events of the city on the team’s minds.

The titular Elio is Pixar’s first Mexican-Dominican lead character, coming at a time when L.A. is at the center of immigration protests and the Latino community is being particularly targeted by Ice raids.

Madeline Sharafian, who directed the film alongside Domee Shi, told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet, “I think right now in particular I think a lot of people in the world can relate to where Elio is at the beginning of the film, where he has a very pessimistic view of Earth, which I think sometimes we’re all feeling.” As he goes on a journey through space and makes friends with aliens, she continued, “He changes his view of Earth a little bit,...

Young Dylan is a seemingly straight local working-class guy who lives with his alcoholic mother (Robyn Lively) and little brother Cassidy (Joey DeLeon). One day, he gets hired by the ranch’s jefe Pepe (Rene Rosado), shifting hay bales for cash. When Dylan lays eyes on slinky...

Fans Livid As Nickelodeon Cancels Popular Show
Image
Nickelodeon grew a rep for quietly canceling shows, but this week, they gave advance notice that a popular show will end after 46 episodes. Sometimes, viewers call for shows to get canceled. For example, in 2020 lots of voices rose on Twitter (Now X) and called for the cancelation of Paw Patrol. With the latest cancellation, fans seem a bit unhappy.

Nickelodeon Cancellations And Renewals

Often, shows will just fade quietly away. And other times, new content arrives. Whether it’s the ratings, or just random is sometimes confusing. Instead of canceling Paw Patrol, it ran on and in 2022, another spinoff came that focused on Rubble. Then in 2023, more renewals came with shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Big Nate, and others.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? Nickelodeon

2024 brought less happy news about Nickelodeon. Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids TV revealed that a toxic workplace existed there for two decades.

Tyler Perry Strikes First-Look TV Deal With Netflix As Streamer Orders ‘Beauty In Black’ Drama Series

It follows two women leading different lives — Kimmie is struggling to make a living after her mother kicked her out and Mallory is running a successful business — who find themselves entangled in each other’s lives.

Angi Bones and Tony Strickland will also produce for Tyler Perry Studios.
