Imagine waking up one day in a completely unfamiliar place, with no clue who you are or how you got there. That’s exactly what the protagonist of James Bamford’s latest film, “Man with No Past,” goes through when he finds himself in an unknown city with zero memory of his past. The film features an impressive cast, including Jon Voight as Paul Sanborn, Adam Woodward as Ryder, Marton Csokas as Soach, Charlotte Vega as Morgan, and many more.
Unfortunately, the film’s weak and underwhelming execution belies its interesting and not-so-frequently discussed topic. In a similar vein, neither the film nor the storyline does anything to bring out the best in the cast. Hollywood legend Jon Voight has a history of success, but his character is lifeless and uninteresting in this film. Similarly, no matter what happens in the film, Adam Woodward’s character never does anything but wear a smoldering expression.

"Select who you want to be, and where, and the rest is magic." Republic Pics via Paramount has revealed the official trailer for an indie sci-fi thriller called Utopia, directed by James Bamford. Another extremely generic title for a film that tells you absolutely nothing about it. The thriller film follows a soldier searching for his missing wife. During his search he breaks into a high-tech facility, believing she’s been caught in a trafficking ring. But beyond its walls, he finds a surreal, futuristic fantasy park where reality & illusion blur. As he navigates this seductive and dangerous world, a shocking truth pulls him deeper into a deadly game where nothing is as it seems. Moe Dunford and Charlotte Vega star in this action packed thriller along with Daniel Bernhardt, Michael D. Xavier, Jason Flemyng, Alix Villaret, Wanda Banda, Maddy Ambus, and Jade Coatsworth. This looks like a big Westworld rip-off,...

Back in August of 2021, Skyline franchise writer Liam O’Donnell announced that he had just finished writing the script for the fourth entry in the alien invasion Skyline series. At that time, he said he had “no idea how likely this is to get made,” but the project – which was once being called Skyline Radial but has ended up with the title Skyline: Warpath – has since made its way into production. Back in January, the movie secured a US distribution deal with XYZ Films, and now Variety reports that it’s set to receive UK and Irish distribution through Signature Entertainment.
Written and directed by O’Donnell, Skyline: Warpath is coming our way from Palisades Park Pictures. Set within the Skyline universe and two years after the events of Beyond Skyline, the film follows Sua as he leads The Resistance against the invading aliens. Today, May 30th, marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the backwoods slasher movie Wrong Turn, and to celebrate Entertainment Weekly has published an article that looks back at the making of the film, from the real-life moment that inspired Alan B. McElroy to write the screenplay (he and his wife were stuck in a winter traffic jam and decided to take a side road detour) through the hiring of Rob Schmidt to direct the film (he chose it over a Hellraiser sequel), the casting of the killers, and the tricks Stan Winston’s FX team did on the set. The article also gives a nod to the five sequels that followed – and to the 2021 reboot, which was also written by McElroy. While being interviewed, McElroy mentioned that he’s hoping to make two sequels to the reboot.

Intriguing alt-history about a struggle to capture the dictator’s corpse is ill-served by vague characterisation and feeble action scenes
What if Hitler’s body hadn’t been cremated in Berlin by the SS? That alt-history teaser is the starting point for Ben Parker’s action thriller, which posits a tug of war over the corpse between a Soviet unit escorting it back to Stalin and pro-Nazi partisans hellbent on recovering it. Taking place in the Polish forests in the dying days of the second world war, Burial has an ambitious scope and a rueful sense of war’s barrenness – so it’s a shame it can’t unwrap its formaldehyde-steeped central conceit into something dramatically satisfying.
Brana (Charlotte Vega) is a young intelligence officer tasked with escorting the decomposing Führer back to Moscow, but morale is flagging among her soldiers as they travel through dense woodland stalked by “werewolf” resistance fighters.

Film premiere and headlines spilling from a trio of fests in full swing (Venice), just starting (Telluride) and queued up (Toronto) have indie exhibitors and distributors the most hopeful since Covid hit that a stream of new films could fire up the arthouse market.
Tod Fields’ Cate Blanchett-starrer Tár (debuted to a six-minute standing ovation in Venice), Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All (also just screened on the Lido), and Empire of Light with Olivia Colman, set to world premiere at Telluride, and a raft of others are slated for fall theatrical release. A deluge of specialty films from Sundance and Cannes will also move into U.S. cinemas later this month.
“Arthouse theaters are behind where they were in 2019, but I think this fall things will come racing back. These festivals have the goods,” said John Vanco, Gm of New York’s IFC Center.

Cinema has trained us to expect the worst in some situations. A septuagenarian woman (Harriet Walter) settling down for the night in her quiet suburban home with her little dog, who seems a bit off-colour. A young man in a wolf mask sneaking into the house. This situation does not play out the way the audience, or the young man, expect.
The woman is Anna, but there was a time when she was known as Brana and lived a very different life, working as a translator in the Soviet military. As her story unfolds, with Charlotte Vega playing her younger incarnation, we learn about a secret mission which saw her unit charged with bringing the remains of Adolf Hitler back from Germany during the dying days of World War Two, so that Stalin could look upon the face of his enemy and the world could have proof of the Nazi führer’s.

Burial
In director Ben Parker's Burial, Harriet (Anna Marshall), an old woman, watches the news reports of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her quiet Christmas Eve is disturbed when a young violent neo-Nazi breaks into her house, demanding that she gives him what he knows she has.
Instead, she recounts the events from May of 1945, when intelligence officer Brana Vasilyeva (Charlotte Vega), her younger self, led a group of Soviet troops on a mission to transport Hitler's remains to Stalin.
Charlotte Vega in Burial
Transposing the claustrophobic tension of Parker's underwater début feature The Chamber, for the dying days of the Second World War, Vasilyeva and her unit try to fend off attacks from German Werewolves. Burial is a story as much about one woman struggling with a mission that challenges her moral boundaries, as it is a timely reflection on the recurring cycles of toxic ideologies.

Nazi ghouls have figured in plenty of horror movies, whether preserved (1966’s “The Frozen Dead”), newly bioengineered (1978’s “The Boys from Brazil”) or zombiefied (too many to list). Edging close to that terrain, “Burial” revolves around a corpse — the corpse, as far as WWII’s end was concerned — that does not reanimate or otherwise come “back to life,” but poses a grave threat nonetheless.
Not-quite-horror despite its macabre theme and mood, this sophomore directorial feature for Ben Parker is a handsomely produced period thriller that delivers in terms of action and atmospherics, even if his somewhat convoluted story doesn’t maximally pay off. IFC Midnight is releasing the Estonia-shot U.K. production to limited U.S. theaters and on-demand platforms Sept. 2.
A framing device set in 1991 London has elderly Anna disturbed one night by an intruder. No helpless spinster, she soon has the skinhead-looking young perp (David Alexander) cuffed to her radiator.

"Look around you. There's no one here... No one cares. The war is over." IFC Midnight has revealed the official trailer for a WWII thriller titled Burial, from filmmaker Ben Parker (The Chamber). This should've shown up at some festivals before opening, but it hasn't yet, and will be heading straight to theaters (and VOD) in early September if anyone is curious about watching anyway. Set during the last days of WWII, a band of Russian soldiers tasked with transporting Hitler's remains out of Germany are ambushed by Nazi "Wehrwolf" fighters. They must ensure their "cargo" doesn’t fall into the hands of those who would see it buried, in order to hide the truth forever. Now on Shudder, Filip Jan Rymsza’s Mosquito State is an interesting piece that uses body horror to tell a story of madness in the face of impending change. It’s a film as frustrating as it is fascinating, because for every solid moment, it has another that comes up a little short. But the moments that work, really work, and the feeling of doom that the story carries with it is undeniably effective.
The film opens as a lone mosquito finds its way into the posh party of a New York financial firm and lands on the neck of the office genius/weirdo, Richard Boca (Beau Knapp). Richard’s specialty is data trends and modeling. He has designed a program to help understand current market changes and predict how they will resolve. Grafting Cronenbergian body horror onto the 2008 financial crisis, Filip Jan Rymsza’s horror-tinged Mosquito State takes its title very literally, beginning with the up-close birth of a mosquito and ends, quite appropriately, with an insect apocalypse as the stock market collapses. In-between those potent images, however, is a work with plenty of grandiose ideas and little sense of how to communicate them. Thematically muddled but visually stunning, Rymsza’s film serves as a warning call for those who prioritize form over all else, elaborately staged shots doing little to hide the ever-growing narrative inconsistencies.
Its ostensible protagonist is Richard Boca (Beau Knapp), an investment-firm “golden goose” whose finance-bro colleagues openly disdain him. He’s awkward, introverted, and something of a wunderkind: his algorithm “Honeybee” is both incredibly lucrative for the firm and modeled on colony-collapse disorder, a phenomenon wherein the worker bees disappear, leaving the queen bee with outsize resources...

“Cronenberg meets Kafka… Knapp commits fully to the hideous spectacle of a man steadily beaten by merciless nature.”– David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
“You could probably call it the Citizen Kane of Wall Street insect movies. Then again, it’s the only Wall Street insect movie. Knapp, in a performance of unnerving calmand unblinkered insanity… manages to get under your skin.

"Welcome to the world, little guy." Shudder has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie horror thriller called Mosquito State, which originally premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival. It also played at the Sitges Film Festival and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and will debut streaming on Shudder starting this month. Set in 2007, the film is about a Wall Street analyst living in his apartment overlooking Central Park who brings back some strange mosquitos which begin to swarm inside of his apartment. It's a "weird" psychological thriller about a Wall Street worker slowly breaking down. "Finding common ground between Franz Kafka, David Cronenberg & Mary Harron’s American Psycho, director-screenwriter Filip Jan Rymsza emerges with a new kind of body horror, set during a single week of an exquisitely rendered pre-crash 2007 replete with signs of sociopolitical and economic rot." Starring Beau Knapp, with Charlotte Vega, Jack Kesy, and Olivier Martinez.

To say that remakes suck is very easy to say. There are plenty of examples to show just how classics should not be touched. Remakes have their place in the world of film though, and help new people discover films they never knew existed. Then a movie comes along like Wrong Turn that makes the brave step of being different and being surprisingly good.
A group of friends hiking on the Appalachian Trail take a wrong turn and find themselves in trouble. A few week later one of the friend’s fathers takes the same trail to find out what happened to her…
My synopsis of the film is brief and not highly informative for a point, and that is that this is a movie you really need to go into cold.

Following the release of the latest Wrong Turn movie, Constantin Music is set to release the film's soundtrack this Thursday, and we have the exclusive track premiere of "Snare Trap" from composer Stephen Lukach:
"The process for director Mike Nelson and I started by discussing some of our influences and inspirations, after which it became clear that he was very interested in the specific sounds and sonics of the score. He wanted it to be largely sound design-based and also to be as simple as possible when we could, focusing on finding key signature sounds for certain characters and situations as opposed to melodic themes. As we got into the scoring process, the sounds that Mike most gravitated towards were scratchy and piercing solo strings and high atonal synths to supplement the tension and horror, warped and manipulated pulses to add pace and intensity, and rumbling and growling basses...

The seventh entry in the franchise, with its weird cultists, takes a few original steps off the well-beaten hillbilly horror path
This horror is pretty crass and generic, yet there is occasionally a wacky gonzo energy to this film by director Mike P Nelson, the seventh movie in the Wrong Turn slasher franchise, which began back in 2003 in the classic 1970s style of The Hills Have Eyes. This is also a reboot or summation in that it is called, simply, Wrong Turn, like the first one, without the number seven.
Charlotte Vega plays Jen, a fresh-faced twentysomething hiking the Appalachian trail with a group of her friends. After rashly deciding to go off the official path, into the dense woodland, in search of a “civil war fort” (an ominous destination if ever there was one), they are gruesomely set upon by sinister hillbillies and mountain men dressed in weird animal...

Back in 2003, director Rob Schmidt and writer Alan B. McElroy dropped Wrong Turn on the world and took the “lost in the woods” horror drama to the next level. Introducing us to Three-Fingers, Saw-Tooth and One-Eye, West Virginia’s newest favorite family. Wrong Turn would also cement Eliza Dushku and Desmond Harrington as would be stars. I, honestly, bloody love that first movie and found it genuinely scary at the time, yeah it spawned about seven hundred and thirty three sequels that all pretty much sucked in comparison but they have remained a guilty pleasure in part due to my love of that original movie.

It will be news to most that Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort was released back in 2014. The cannibal caper was so exhausted that just one critic slated it on Rotten Tomatoes – no one else could be bothered. It appeared to be the series’ swan song, adding a final 90 minutes to what had become a slideshow of murder, with characters and narrative a total afterthought. Instead, the filmmakers explored what it looks like when you drill someone’s torso with a garden auger, or how much blood sprays when you run them over with a snow blower. For Wrong Turn 6, director Valeri Milev made his mark on the oeuvre by showing what happens when you perform a colonoscopy with a fire hose, riffing on the petrol pump meets human esophagus moment in 2011’s Inbred.
What next for a series that has done it all? To continue killing people with garden tools...

"Descendants of these people are still living up their on the mountain?" Signature Entertainment in the UK has released a new UK trailer for the backwoods horror thriller titled Wrong Turn, from filmmaker Mike P. Nelson. We featured the full US trailer a month ago. Technically speaking, this is actually the seventh film in the Wrong Turn franchise, despite the same title. This time around, friends hiking the Appalachian Trail are confronted by "The Foundation", a cult community of killers who have lived in the mountains for hundreds of years. Suddenly under siege, Jen and her group of friends seem headed right to the point of no return. Starring Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, Tim DeZarn, as well as Matthew Modine. This is a much better trailer than the other one, way more intense and more footage of the freaky stuff that happens in the woods.

After 18 years, the Wrong Turn franchise returns to theaters for one night only later this month. 2003’s cult classic starring Eliza Dushku spawned a total of five straight-to-dvd sequels over the next decade or so, with the last one coming out in 2014. Now, the horror series is being rebooted with 2021’s simply titled Wrong Turn, featuring an all-new cast and an all-new threat but some familiar hallmarks from earlier films.
