The first trailer for the controversial Western, Rust, has been released at last, revealing our first look at Alec Baldwin as an aging outlaw. The footage also offers our first look at the cinematography of Halyna Hutchins, who was tragically killed when a live round was discharged from a prop gun being used by Baldwin while filming a scene.
Alongside the trailer, you can also read the newly revealed official synopsis for Rust below.
“In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico. As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter...

Standing on the shoulders of Oscar-bothering British boffin dramas such as The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, Ben Taylor's (Sex Education) big-screen debut is a gentle proposition that would fit snugly into the Christmas TV schedules. It follows young nurse/embryologist Jean (Thomasin McKenzie), scientist Dr Robert Edwards (James Norton), known as Bob, and obstetrician Patrick Steptoe (Bill Nighy) from 1968-1978 as they create the first “test-tube baby” through painstaking — and often painful — trial and error.
While the script serves up a few clunkers — “You truly are impossible, aren’t you?” Jean tells Bob with an indulgent smile; “We’re making the impossible possible!” he marvels — it always has the ring of emotional truth about it. Screenwriter Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes) and his wife Rachel Mason, who developed the story with Emma Gordon and Shaun Topp, went through IVF themselves, so they know how brutal even a...

The most eagerly awaited A-lister expected at the Turin Film Festival in Italy, which opened Friday, is not honoree Sharon Stone, nor is it Angelina Jolie, who will be on hand to screen her new movie as a director, Without Blood.
It is instead Alec Baldwin, whose involuntary manslaughter case following the tragic accident on the set of his indie Western Rust was dismissed in August. On Oct. 21, 2021, Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of the film when Baldwin fired a live round from a prop revolver that was supposed to be filled with dummy bullets. The shot also hit the film’s director, Joel Souza, in the shoulder, narrowly missing his spine.
Baldwin will fly into the Northern Italian town of Turin on Monday, where he will be given the festival’s prestigious Stella a Mole, a career achievement honor. He will meet the international media...

‘Rust’ Comes To Poland
Torun, Poland – November 20: Cinematographer Bianca Cline (L) and film director Joel Souza (R) continue the discussions following screening of the movie ‘Rust’
Alec Baldwin Western overshadows: It would be an understatement to say that the Camerimage Film Festival had a bumpy ride in its run-up this year, but it finally kicked off this past weekend in Torun, Poland, and Zac was on the ground. This year’s edition had a bumper lineup of awards season titles such as The Brutalist and Wicked, while also managing to enlist two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett for the international competition jury. But it’s easy to understand how this buzz was comfortably overshadowed by the festival’s shock decision to...

After an unthinkable tragedy and over three years of paused production, Alec Baldwin's indie drama Rust finally premiered in Poland, earning a surprisingly warm reception from viewers despite the film's well-documented controversy. Not everyone was pleased by Rust's success, however, including the mother of the late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins as well as some of her colleagues and compatriots in the industry.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ill-fated Western earned its warm welcome at the Camerimage Film Festival, an event which specifically focuses on achievements in cinematography. Before the screening began, Camerimage director Kazimierz Suwala addressed the crowd which was mostly made up of photography directors and production professionals and invited them to take a moment of silence for Hutchins, who was fatally shot on the set of Rust in 2021. Festival founder Marek Zydowicz then stepped in, saying that he had agreed to host the premiere to honor Hutchins,...

Every birth is extraordinary in its own way. But that was never more true than in the case of Louise Joy Brown, the first “test-tube baby.” Born in 1978, Louise’s extraordinary birth was the result of a decade of work by surgeons, scientists, and embryologists.
Directed by Ben Taylor (Sex Education), and co-created by Jack Thorne and Rachel Mason, Joytells the remarkable story of those hardworking men and women — and how their work paved the way for the advent of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

It has been three years since the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Alec Baldwin western Rust. The film made its debut at the Camerimage Festival in Poland in November 2024 to a "subdued" and thin crowd, Deadline reports. One person not in attendance was Hutchins' mother, Olga Solovey, who publicly refused to appear at the premiere, stating that she viewed the release of the film as an attempt to profit off her daughter's death.
According to Variety, in a statement issued the day before the screening by her lawyer, Gloria Allred, Solovey said:
It was always my hope to meet my daughter in Poland to watch her work come alive on screen... Unfortunately, that was ripped away from me when Alec Baldwin discharged his gun and killed my daughter. Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and...

A strange page in the book of contemporary cinema history was written this afternoon in Torun, Poland where the beleaguered Alec Baldwin western Rust screened publicly for the first time.

Over three years after the accidental on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Alec Baldwin’s Western film “Rust” received a polite response during its controversial premiere screening Wednesday at the EnergaCamerimage festival in Toruń, Poland.
The audience clapped through the film’s closing credits, strengthening their applause when a dedication to Hutchins appeared. However, the film didn’t attract a capacity crowd and a fair amount of moviegoers left the theater before the credits ended, prior to a Q&a with director Joel Souza — who was also injured in the October 2021 gun accident that took place while filming in New Mexico — and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who completed the movie.
Producer and star Alec Baldwin — who was handling the prop gun at the time of the accident — was not invited to attend the festival, according to an event spokesperson. Baldwin was charged with manslaughter but the case was dismissed on the...

The words “For Halyna” briefly appeared, followed by a quote she often repeated: What can we do to make this better?,” according to multiple media reports.
Not in attendance: Producer and star Alec Baldwin, who was reportedly not invited to attend the festival. Hutchins mother, who blames Baldwin for her daughter’s death and says he never called to apologize, also did not attend, and detailed her reasons in a Tuesday statement.

The quest to develop IVF plays out in predictable and thoroughly heartwarming fashion in Ben Taylor’s Netflix film. Here’s our Joy review.
Picture the scene: James Norton, looking less like Happy Valley’s rotten ruffian Tommy Lee Royce and more like an overenthusiastic biology postgrad, is desperate to convince a colleague of his revolutionary idea. What if, he posits with the scientific professionalism of a vaguely northern labrador, we could fertilise an egg outside the womb? What if we could produce an embryo in, to pick a piece of lab equipment entirely at random, a test tube?
The colleague isn’t convinced. “We’ll unite them all against us”, Bill Nighy’s character reminds him. The church, the medical establishment, the media. But Doctor Marley & Me has his trump card. “We’ll have the mothers”, he whispers. The score swells; Nighy’s eyes twinkle; history is made.

Exclusive: Thomasin McKenzie says that because of her youthful appearance — she’s 24 — it has been “a bit of a struggle” to play her own age or older, but those worries are banished with her latest role. In the wonderful movie Joy, she delivers a remarkable portrait of Jean Purdy, one of the founding pioneers of human in vitro fertilization therapy, commonly known as IVF.
If gynecologist Dr. Patrick Steptoe and physiologist Robert Edwards are regarded as the “fathers” of IVF, then Purdy, a nurse and embryologist, is its godmother.
It’s a spot-on perfect part for the New Zealander who starred in Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho and The Power of the Dog, and she shines brilliantly as Purdy alongside Bill Nighy as Steptoe and James Norton as Edwards, who later was knighted for his services to medical research.

Alec Baldwin’s lawyers alleged a “stunning abuse of prosecutorial power” in the “Rust” case on Tuesday, arguing that a favorable plea offer was withdrawn last fall due to a misunderstanding about Baldwin’s role in a documentary about the case.
Baldwin is facing a trial in July in Santa Fe, N.M., on a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. If convicted, he faces up to 18 months in prison.
Last October, prosecutors offered him a misdemeanor plea that would carry no jail time. But prosecutor Kari Morrissey said in a recent filing that she rescinded that offer after learning that Baldwin had “commissioned his own documentary” about Hutchins’ death, and was pressuring witnesses in the case to participate.
Concerned that Baldwin’s conduct would cause ongoing harm the victims and their families, she withdraw the offer and decided to seek a felony indictment.

Story Syndicate has begun production on a feature-length documentary on the life and work of Haylna Hutchins. The film will detail both her work as a cinematographer and her death on the set of the low-budget western “Rust.” Emmy nominee Rachel Mason (“Circus of Books”) will direct the film, which has the approval and backing of Hutchins’ widower Matt Hutchins. Julee Metz is producing.
The current untitled documentary will have exclusive access to Hutchins’ personal and professional archives. It will detail her early life living on a Soviet naval base and then in Kyiv, Ukraine and eventually chronicle her rise to professional prominence as one of the indie film scenes’ most sought-after cinematographers. It will, of course, deal with the on-set calamity which saw Hutchins being fatally injured while shooting “Rust,” a Alec Baldwin-led indie, as well as the fallout from that tragedy and attempts to complete the film.
