The Action Scene | Choreographing the Real: A Conversation with Kenji Tanigaki
Image
This piece was occasioned by Issue 7 of Notebook magazine as part of a broader exploration of the unfilmable. The magazine is available via direct subscription or in select stores around the world.Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends.Unlike the wuxia warrior who soars to rafters and treetops, the fighters in the Rurouni Kenshin films (2012–21) move low and fast. Rather than immaculate choreography immaculately framed—the meat and potatoes of golden-age Hong Kong martial arts cinema—their swordplay is less studied, a quicksilver flow of action and reactions. And unlike the conventional samurai standoff, in which opponents take their time sizing each other up from a distance, the action is pure, intimate bedlam. Blades clash everywhere, from tip to hilt, bringing combatants up close; when an attack is dodged, it misses by mere inches. Some of the most iconic moments involve the hero, Himura Kenshin (Takeru Satoh), weaving tightly through a throng of opponents,...

Flying Lotus Boards Tanigaki Kenji and Bill Kong’s Asian Action Epic ‘The Furious’ (Exclusive)
Image
Influential electronic musician, producer and filmmaker Flying Lotus has signed on to the soundtrack of Asian action showstopper film “The Furious.”

Produced by the region’s top producer Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Hero”), Frank Hui and Shan Tam, the film features a pan-Asian cast that also includes Indonesian’s Joe Taslim, Thai star Jeeja Yanin (“Chocolate”), Yang Enyu, Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga and Yayan Ruhian.

Michael J. Werner, former principal at Fortissimo Films, and Todd Brown and Aram Tertzakian of XYZ Films serve as executive producers. Kong’s Edko Films is financing the movie and will distribute in Hong Kong,...

‘Bangkok Dog’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: D.Y. Sao, Brian Le, Bear Williams, Sahajak Boontanakij, Ron Smoorenburg | Written by Laurence Walsh | Directed by Chaya Supannarat

Our story kicks off with Special Agent Andrew Kang (D.Y. Sao), a U.S.-based operative with a serious love for solving problems with his fists or more accurately, his entire arsenal of martial arts skills. After a drug bust in Los Angeles uncovers a shipment laced with tragedy (five dead bodies stashed among the contraband), Kang worms his way into an undercover mission in Bangkok. His task? Impersonate a captured cartel operative, Benz Wu (Brian Le), and dismantle a ruthless Thai crime syndicate from the inside. The plot is straightforward in fact it’s almost skeletal, but that’s by design and really not an issue for me. The script knows its role: it’s a bullet point checklist that accommodates the real spectacle, the fights and it executes that role with flawless precision.

Bangkok Dog – Review
Image
As long as there’ve been undercover police operations, there’ve been movies about one of them staying so long with the bad guys that he’s become bonded with them and is close to losing his original self. One popular example is Keanu Reaves turning into Patrick Swayze’s bestie in 1991’s Point Break. One regrettable example is its 2015 reboot. The Thai action flick Bangkok Dog lands solidly in the genre’s plus column.

The story opens with a pair of US cops busting a couple of thugs who have smuggled people and drugs from Thailand, resulting in 5 corpses in a container. They’d died in transit when the baggies of cocaine they’d been forced to swallow had burst. One of the officers, D.Y. Sao, manages to take the place of the brute they’d captured (Brian Le) and head for Thailand, where the gang is headquartered, hoping...

Action Thriller The Furious Is the Perfect Cross Between Taken & The Raid
Image
An upcoming action thriller could very well be what every action movie fan has been waiting for. Sounding like the perfect cross between Liam Neesons 2008 hit Taken and director Gareth Evans The Raid, the movie boasts an incredible cast of martial arts actors with enviable action movie pedigree, a filmmaker with a penchant for stunts, and an exquisitely no-nonsense plot that should allow for the punches, kicks, and everything else in between to fly hard and fast.

Titled The Furious (which should tell you everything you need to know about what were in for), the action outing is all set to be helmed by Tanigaki Kenji, who is best known for his stunt work in the likes of the Donnie Yen movie Raging Fire, G.I. Joe spin-off Snake Eyes, and this years martial arts hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Without further ado, you can check out the synopsis for The Furious below,...

Official US Trailer for 'Bangkok Dog' Martial Arts Film from Thailand
Image
"One wrong move... and you just disappear." Well Go USA has unveiled the official trailer for a Thai action crime thriller film titled Bangkok Dog, the feature debut of director Chaya Supannarat. Another generic title that will get lost in the mix with everything else out there on VOD – this will be out to watch digitally in November. From the cast and stunt team behind the Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All At Once – an American agent is sent on a dangerous undercover mission in Thailand to dismantle a sadistic crime lord. As he works to gain the trust of higher-ups in the gang’s inner circle, the line between cop & criminal becomes increasingly blurred "One agent. Two lives. No mercy." It's described as a "high-octane martial arts thriller" starring D.Y. Sao, Brian Le, Byron Bishop, Jenny Philomena Van Der Sluijs, as well as Sahajak Boontanakji. The main guy in here...

Oscar-winning ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ trio could reunite at Emmys
Image
One year after “Everything Everywhere All at Once” became the third film to ever merit three acting Oscars, the recipients of those trophies all have their sights set on Emmy glory. As candidates in three separate 2024 races, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan are headed for an exciting reunion that could very well lead to one or more of them winning the TV academy’s favor in September.

Curtis, whose Oscar victory caught more predictors by surprise than those of her two cast mates, is now the strongest Emmy contender of the three according to our racetrack odds. Indeed, her guest stint as alcoholic mother Donna Berzatto on the FX comedy series “The Bear” is widely expected to bring her her first Emmy win, even in the face of formidable opponents from the same show (like Olivia Colman and Sarah Paulson) and returning champion Maya Rudolph (“Saturday Night Live...

Film Review: Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
Image
Included in the best of lists of a number of individual critics and societies, and towards the top for that matter, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” is a truly unique movie that functions as a homage to a number of iconic movies of the past while embracing its story’s chaos in the most entertaining fashion.

Evelyn Wang is a Chinese immigrant and the definite head of her family, as much as the boss of the laundromat she operates with her husband Raymond. Despite her non-stop efforts, however, her life is in shambles. Her daughter, Joy, is afraid of revealing that her female friend is actually her girlfriend, and the tension between them is palpable; her father, Gong Gong, who has just arrived in the US, is as judgemental of her as ever, something that actually also dictates her relationship with her own daughter.
