Longtime “The Simpsons” writer Carolyn Omine was dealt a few personal setbacks the past few years, as both her father and sister died — while she was also facing the professional uncertainty that came with the Hollywood strikes.

As Omine faced these hard moments, she found escape in watching videos of English mentalist and illusionist Derren Brown. The clips of Brown show him playing pranks on people — not in a mean-spirited way, but rather to explore human behavior. “There was something very moving about them,” Omine says. “Something that sort of reflected the just the beauty of what human beings are.”

When the strikes ended, “The Simpsons” found itself on an accelerated timetable to produce its first-ever original episode for Disney+, a Christmas-themed special that premiered Dec. 17.

Halloween is over, and the Christmas season has officially begun on Netflix, with the first of five new Christmas movies releasing on Wednesday.

This one is called “Meet Me Next Christmas,” and stars Christina Milian and Devale Ellis. It centers on Layla (Milian), as she frantically runs around New York City trying to get a ticket to Pentatonix’s Christmas Eve Concert, in the hopes of meeting the man of her dreams there.

So yes, there are a whole lot of Pentatonix songs on the soundtrack for the film. Some are new, some are classics, and some admittedly aren’t by Pentatonix at all.

“Our annual iHeartRadio Jingle Ball lineup is one of our most anticipated of the year, and we’re excited to finally share who will be joining us on the road this season,” Tom Poleman, chief programming officer for iHeartMedia, said in a statement (via Billboard). “This event always showcases the best in pop music and gives our listeners the chance to celebrate the holiday season alongside their favorite artists.”

ABC will be airing a Jingle Ball special on Dec. 21 featuring footage from all of the tour stops. The special will be available on demand and on Hulu the following day.

In Performance at the White House will return with a holiday season special to air on PBS on Dec. 21, with the program taped from Dec. 11-14.

Jennifer Garner will host the special, with performances by Andrea Bocelli, Matteo Bocelli, Virginia Bocelli, Camila Cabello, Eric Church, the Jonas Brothers, Norah Jones, Pentatonix, Billy Porter, Northwell Health Nurse Choir, Voices of Service and “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will deliver remarks, and the event, titled Spirit of the Season, will highlight the holiday decor of the White House.

This will be the first In Performance since 2016, as none were held during the presidency of Donald Trump. The special also will be different in that the performances will be taped over a span of a few days, rather than a concert in the East Room, as has been tradition. That is because of Covid-19 protocols.

NBC didn’t allow the abrupt firing of Today anchor Matt Lauer to dampen its holiday spirit: Lauer’s name was not mentioned at all during the network’s annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center tree-lighting special Wednesday, despite the fact that Lauer was originally scheduled to co-host the event.

Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Hoda Kotb oversaw the special just hours after they’d announced to Today viewers that Lauer had been terminated from his position at the morning talk show after allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Pentatonix are turning the page after band member Avi Kaplan’s recent departure.

Kaplan revealed he would be “taking a step back” from the a cappella group after six years during a tearful video posted to Facebook on May 12. But Penatonix are taking a leap forward — to find a new bass vocalist.

“We’ll have to find a new bass,” Maldonado tells People Now when asked where the band stands without Kaplan. “There are five of us, so that’s a fifth that’s gone.”
