New to Netflix on October 24, 2024, Territory is an Australian neo-Western TV series that enjoyed popular success on the platform. Directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek), the six-part series concerns the biggest global cattle farm, Marianne Station, and the Lawson family, who have controlled it for generations. Netflix's Territory ends with a twist reveal that confirms who season 2's main villain should be. Throughout season 1, audiences are introduced to the central Lawson family, a dynasty of Cattle Barons who've run Marianne Station for several generations. After the death of Daniel Lawson, the fate of Marianne falls into question as a conflict of succession ensues. Not only does this conflict impact the internal relations of the Lawsons, but outside antagonists begin to circle their land, looking to swoop in and take control.
Territory season 1's ending saw the Lawsons and the Indigenous community in a fateful shootout with Campbell Miller and his men. Miller is another local cattle baron with a violent history, and it's generally implied that he's something of a gangster in the area. He's one of the main threats to the ranch in season 1, particularly after Emily Lawson rejects him romantically. However, the season...

Territory season 1 briefly suggests that there might be more to Marshall's parentage than what meets the eye in a statement by Graham. The majority of Territory's cast play members of the Lawson family, a dynasty of cattle barons who have reigned over the world's largest cattle station for several generations. Though they may be tied by blood, the Lawsons are far from the most loving family, with the dynamics of power and wealth interfering with their potential affection for one another, which is why Marshall spends most of the season away from everyone else.
Marshall Lawson is something of a rogue in Territory season 1. He's the prodigal son whom Colin, the family patriarch, wants to take over the mantle as the ranch's leader following the death of Daniel Lawson. However, Marshall has minimal interest in the family business and explains multiple times that he doesn't like the way...

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Territory season 1Territory's dramatic family dynamics and power struggles over land have gotten fans of the Netflix show questioning who exactly is in charge of different locations seen throughout the series. Territory's primary story revolves around the Lawson family as different family members vie for control of Marianne Station while, at the same time, outside competitors try to take the land from them, culminating in intense conflicts like the one that played out in the Territory season 1 finale.
As the title implies, land ownership was central to the lives of the people occupying the region and period depicted in the series. Much of the show's complexity revolves around the line of succession in controlling Marianne Station and which groups really have a claim to the land, but the show itself does provide some helpful insight into Territory's land ownership hierarchy.

Netflix's latest Western series, Territory, bears a notable resemblance to Paramount's Yellowstone, and there are several reasons why. Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western has been one of the most popular TV shows in recent years, regarded for the performances from its all-star cast, including Kevin Cosner's leading role. While the Western genre seems to have faded away for the time being in films, Yellowstone has paved the way for a new style of soap opera neo-Westerns on television, with Territory's Lawson family all too similar to the Duttons of the Yellowstone Ranch.
It's certainly not a critique of Territory to point out its similarities to Yellowstone. It makes sense that Netflix would want to capitalize on Taylor Sheridan's success, and part of what makes Territory work is that it offers its own regional spin on it. Territory's cast is made up of Australian and New Zealand actors,...

Marshall Lawson and Sharnie stumble on skulls on Lawson land in Territory season 1, setting up a future narrative and mystery to solve. The Netflix neo-Western series introduces audiences to the Lawson family, a cattle dynasty that's owned the world's largest cattle station for several generations. While they may serve as the protagonists of the series, the Lawsons have a long history of violence that's coming back to haunt them, and much of the series is about how that history reflects on the current generation.
Marshall Lawson is played by Sam Corlett in the Territory cast, representing the newest generation of Lawsons. Though he was raised in Marianne Station, by the start of the TV series, he's shown to be an outlier in his family who's run off with friends and has close to no interest in the family business. In episode 4, Marshall and Sharnie are finally on their own away...

Campbell Miller is one of Territory's most important antagonists, with season 1 leaving his fate questionable. The Netflix neo-Western series depicts the wealthy, prominent Lawson family's crisis of succession following the death of Daniel Lawson, which leaves the world's largest cattle station without a leader. The Lawson family makes up the majority of Territory's cast, but the show also vitally explores other factions and political players who vie for power in the vacancy Daniel leaves behind.
Among those players is cattle baron Campbell Miller, played by New Zealand actor Jay Ryan. He's described as a rags-to-riches type of character who's accumulated local power through questionable, violent means. Throughout the season, his men are shown stealing cattle and firing at Marshall and Sharnie, demonstrating that they aren't the sort to take prisoners. Netflix's Territory surrounds the Lawsons, a notable and wealthy family in the show's fictional cattle industry. The neo-Western series begins with the death of Daniel Lawson, the owner of Marianne Station, resulting in a conflict of succession over the world's largest cattle ranch. Throughout season 1, audiences are introduced to several key members of the Lawson family and their friends and romantic interests, making up a majority of Territory's cast. With the show's quick pacing, it can be hard to keep track of who's who and what their relation is to everyone else.
As events build toward Territory's ending, the specifics of various relationships start to matter more and more. For example, Graham Lawson is the elder son of Daniel Lawson, but he wasn't the one to take ownership of the Marianne Cattle Station. Not to mention, the family patriarch, Colin Lawson, is still alive, yet he's passed down ownership...

In many ways, Netflix’s 2024 drama, Territory, appears to be the Australian counterpart of Paramount’s hit series, Yellowstone, given how both explore complex themes of family relationships, power dynamics, land ownership politics, identity, and legacy against the backdrop of a farming lifestyle in an untamed natural landscape. The one major aspect where Territory differs is the way greater emphasis is placed on indigenous communities—in this case, Aboriginal people—and their plight as they get caught up in the mess created by the outsider white settlers who have seized control of the land that originally belonged to them. The first season of Territory, consisting of six episodes, chronicles the struggles the Lawson family goes through to keep their land, as the family members battle their personal demons to cope with changing times and the demands of the situations they are thrust into.

Territory’s ending hinged on Sandra Kirby and Campbell Miller making one last effort to push the Lawsons out of Marianne Station, i.e. the world’s largest cattle station. The family and anyone associated with them were attacked from multiple angles. For starters, Kirby tried to blow up the sacred site of the Aboriginals, called the Sorry Place, to make way for the road to her old gold mines, which happened to be located within the boundaries of Marianne Station. Then, Lachie (Sandra’s son) revealed that Sandra wasn’t actually planning to use the gold mines to mine, well, gold. Instead, she wanted to utilize the mine’s infrastructure, shafts, and storage facilities to store radioactive waste from the enriched uranium she was planning to sell overseas. That’d poison the land and cause the Lawsons to go out of business for good. On top of all that,...

During the era of network television, shows used to have a shelf-life of at least 10 seasons. Some TV series that were made before the Ott boom continue to enjoy the freedom to adapt and improve over the course of many years, but the same can’t be said about made-for-ott shows, especially the ones on Netflix. Yes, “guilty pleasure content” like Emily in Paris and Elite has benefited from the hate-watch syndrome. However, a lot of really good shows have been unceremoniously axed by the streaming platform before they could find their audience. The one cancellation that hurt viewers the most was Mindhunter. Now, ever since its termination, fans have been clamoring for David Fincher, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and the rest of the team to come together for at least one more season. Like the monkey’s paw curling effect, they did return to Netflix, but just via different projects.

Netflix's latest Western TV drama, Territory, features a strong ensemble cast centered around the main Lawson family. Described frequently as a Yellowstone-like family epic but set in the northern regions of Australia, Territory tells the story of a power struggle following the death of Daniel Lawson, the owner of the Marianne Cattle Station. With no clear candidate set to take his place, a conflict ensues between rival cattle farmers, gangsters, mining magnates, and members of the Lawson family. Headlined by Anna Torv and Michael Dorman, the performances are undoubtedly the show's strong suit.
To construct an authentic feeling for the series, Territory's main cast is made up entirely of Australian and New Zealand-based actors. So, while there may be a handful of fresh faces for audiences watching on Netflix, there are also some familiar stars playing prevalent roles.
