Director Nia DaCosta and producer Jordan Peele resurrect the Candyman in this part-sequel, part-reboot of the 1992 cult classic. Taking several cues from the original film, it’s an intelligent and provocative horror, though straight-up slasher fans may be a little disappointed.
Bernard Rose’s 1992 film was an adaptation of a Clive Barker short story (The Forbidden), which cleverly relocated the action from London to Chicago. It also turned Tony Todd’s titular villain into a terrifying figure of vengeful violence, who could be summoned by uttering his name five times while standing in front of a mirror.
The new film essentially treats the 1992 movie as a source of urban legend. Set in the now gentrified...

So, here’s the thing: there is so much I want to say about this new Candyman and what I really enjoyed about it, but it would literally involve me divulging the very surprising turns that this story takes, so that’s going to make reviewing the film extremely difficult. But what I can say is that Nia DaCosta does take the Candyman mythology in a boldly unexpected direction here that not only enriches everything we know about this character, but also makes it feel extremely timely and timeless all the same.
I know that doesn’t give you a lot of information to go on, so let’s just go ahead and get to the nuts and bolts of Candyman (2021) and I promise at some point it’ll all come together. At the center of this new story is a struggling artist named Anthony (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who is...

After being delayed due to the 2020 pandemic, we’re finally only a few days away from the release of Nia DaCosta’s Candyman (2021), which was produced by Jordan Peele and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, and Vanessa Estelle Williams. The film is a “spiritual sequel” to Bernard Rose’s 1992 film of the same name and delivers up a chilling new take on the timeless character first brought to life by Tony Todd nearly 30 years ago now.
During a recent press day for Candyman, Daily Dead spoke with Kyle Kaminsky, who stars in the film as Grady, the concerned brother-in-law of Brianna (Parris), whose partner Anthony (Abdul-Mateen II) finds himself on a terrifying journey after discovering an urban legend about a man with a hook hand who terrorized the residents of Cabrini Green decades prior. In our interview, Kaminsky, a Chicago-area native, discussed his...

"Candyman is the "Patron Saint" of the Urban Legend." Universal has revealed a new behind-the-scenes featurette for the horror reboot Candyman, described as a "spiritual sequel" to the 1992 cult classic horror film starring Tony Todd. After more than a year of delays due to the pandemic shutting down cinemas, it's finally set to open in theaters at the end of August this year. Producer Jordan Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend that your friend's older sibling likely told you at a sleepover: Candyman. This update on the horror classic stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris (from If Beale Street Could Talk), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, and Vanessa Williams, along with an appearance by the original Tony Todd. The most recent trailer dropped earlier in the summer, but with the release coming up soon, they're debuting more marketing. This featurette spends a bit of time...

Don’t say his name.
Universal and MGM released a terrifying new trailer for Nia DaCosta’s supernatural slasher film, hitting theaters on Aug. 27, 2021.
The trailer gives a backstory to the classic Candyman character, who is said to be an innocent man killed by police after being suspected of putting razor blades in kids’ candy.
“Candyman ain’t a ‘he.’ Candyman is the whole damn hive,” Colman Domingo says in haunting narration in the trailer.
Serving as a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 horror pic of the same name, “Candyman” follows visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, art gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), as they move into the newly gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood of Chicago. When McCoy learns about the tragic true story of Candyman, he begins incorporating the vengeful spirit — summoned if someone says his name into a mirror five times — into his art, unlocking a...

It’s been over 20 years since Hollywood evoked the vengeance-fueled specter of horror franchise Candyman, but the hiatus is coming to an end. With Hollywood’s reboot/remake epoch showing no signs of slowing down, and the buzz surrounding Blumhouse’s recent Halloween sequel/reboot, it appears that the Candyman’s cinematic rebirth is nigh.
Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions have conjured a new Candyman manifestation. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directed the film off a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The film is a “spiritual sequel” that “returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.”
The project arose after the rights—originally held by the now-defunct PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and distributed by Tri-Star—recently became available. MGM will produce with Monkeypaw, with Universal Pictures set to distribute.

The mystery of the Candyman. Filmmaker Nia DaCosta has posted a surprise "trailer" for the upcoming Candyman movie, described as a "spiritual sequel" to the 1992 cult classic horror film starring Tony Todd. The first official trailer debuted back in February, and the movie was supposed to be out in theaters already. It has been rescheduled for release in September after the summer. This breathtaking new trailer is made with paper and shadow puppets telling the origin of the "Candyman" and how he turned into the legend he is today. Mainly because mobs of people vilified him, so he became an actual villain. Or so it seems. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris (from If Beale Street Could Talk), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Kyle Kaminsky, and Vanessa Williams, along with an appearance by the original Tony Todd. This is one of the most unique and most beautiful trailers we've ever seen for a horror movie.

Jordan Peele is back with another terrifying thriller, this time taking on the 1992 horror classic “Candyman.”
The official trailer for MGM and Universal Pictures’ remake was released on Thursday and tells the story of an artist fixated on a mysterious hook-handed killer, deemed the Candyman.
“The urban legend is, if you say his name five times while looking in the mirror, he appears in the reflection and it kills you,” says Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays an artist named Anthony McCoy.
Candyman’s mysterious wrath becomes real when a group of girls say his name five times into a mirror and slayings ensue. McCoy then goes on the hunt for the infamous Candyman, taking photos around his new neighborhood, where he encounters a man who mentions an old candy factory in the area.
“You’re looking for Candyman,” the man asks McCoy. “He’s the monster that’s part of this neighborhood.

"I feel really connected to this neighborhood." Universal has unveiled the first official trailer for the new update on Candyman, described as a "spiritual sequel" to the 1992 cult classic horror film starring Tony Todd. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta (of Little Woods previously) and is produced & co-written by Jordan Peele. This one continues in the the housing projects of Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood, which has been "gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials." Oh boy. But the legend of the Candyman is still haunting the area. This looks great!! Even better than expected. I dig how slick & clean it looks and all the killer art. Very much looking forward to watching. Here's the first official trailer...

Classic 1990s horror franchise Candyman is back thanks to Jordan Peele, and they have the bloody good trailer to prove it....
It’s been more than two decades since Hollywood evoked the vengeance-fueled specter of horror franchise Candyman, but the hiatus is coming to an end. With Hollywood’s reboot/remake epoch showing no signs of stopping, and so much good will about Blumhouse's Halloween sequel/reboot resurgence, Candyman’s cinematic rebirth is nigh. And a little bit like that Halloween reboot, this appears to be more of a sequel and belated continuation on the earliest film in the franchise. They both even have that confusing trick of sharing the same title!
The new Candyman is being conjured by Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions. Further Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) will direct from a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The film is a “spiritual sequel” that...
