Then there was Betaal, which, unlike a lot of people, I actually enjoyed quite a bit. Superboys of Malegaon is a poignant tale of filmmaking and friendship. The movie within a movie takes inspiration from the real-life story of Nasir Sheikh, an amateur filmmaker from the small town of Malegaon. The town’s residents look to Bollywood for a much-needed escape, and Nasir wants to make Bollywood-inspired films for the people of Malegaon, by the people of Malegaon.

As Indian cinema continues to gain recognition worldwide, it’s still hard to explain the hold it has on those of us who grew up with it.

The intrepid cinephile can always do their research; watch the latest buzzy international feature, check out popular films that are streaming, even judge a book by its cover (a movie by its hit songs). But there’s something at the core of Hindi films especially that is deeply entrenched in culture. Usually I explain it by describing the theater where I watched every new Hindi film from 2005-2009: a suburban Michigan multiplex whose concession counter was flanked by two sacred symbols — a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh, and a framed photo of actor Shah Rukh Khan.

You need to understand that, at least conceptually, to appreciate something like “Superboys of Malegaon,” the true story of film fanatics in the eponymous village...

What’s Good: The riveting tale of friendship, ambition, passion for cinema, hardships, heartbreaks, but most importantly, the daring to dream big. The performances, writing, direction, and cinematography are just the cherry on top.

What’s Bad: The film is pretty flawless, but we would have loved to see the ‘super boys’ of Malegaon witness the fruit of their labor a little more in the end.

In 2008, Faiza Ahmad Khan made a documentary, Supermen of Malegaon, that focused on the making of a parody-style movie by amateur director Nasir Shaikh, who found success with his friends in the poor small Indian city of Malegaon, where they used their hometown to copy popular movies, and by doing so gave new life and meaning to the place they were raised.

Now, director Reema Kagti and Shaikh have taken that inspirational true story, opened it up, and turned it into a new narrative theatrical film, Superboys of Malegaon, that shows how a group of friends cleverly turned a love for movies into a bit of a local sensation. The Amazon MGM Studios film had its world premiere Friday at the Toronto Film Festival before a European premiere next month at the BFI London Film Festival. The film opens in early 2025 in India, and later North America.
