Max has renewed the multi-Emmy-winning comedy series Hacks for a fifth season ahead of the season four finale, debuting this Thursday, May 29, at 6:00 p.m. Pt/9:00 p.m. Et. Over the course of its run, the series has garnered 48 Emmy nominations, including a season three win for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Hacks has been a top-five series on Max (soon to be called HBO Max) since its season four debut in the U.S. and a top 10 series globally. Season four has been pacing as the series’ best season yet, achieving both domestic and global week-over-week growth every week so far this season.

The future was looking bright for the late-night comedy show After Midnight, as it had previously secured a renewal for another season. Unfortunately for fans, it's been revealed that Season 3 won't be moving forward after all.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, After Midnight is set to end after its current second season. CBS confirmed that the final episodes of the show ill air in June with no third season in the works. Its 12:35 a.m. time slot hasn't found a new replacement at this time, and it's still unclear if the network will hold onto that hour, or if it will go back to local stations' programming. The show was recently renewed for Season 3, but After Midnight will instead conclude with Season 2 so its host, Taylor Tomlinson, can turn her focus back to her stand-up comedy.

The rest of the 10-episode season will roll out with a single episode on Thursdays for four weeks, then Episodes 7 and 8 on May 15, Episode 9 on May 22, and the season finale on May 29 — right before the May 31 Emmy eligibility deadline. That's a tweak from previous seasons when the show would debut in May and air double episodes every week.

The short space and heightened expression of music videos allow for the kind of scrappy innovation, formal experimentation, and energetic construction that isn’t often allowed to exist in other visual forms. There’s maybe only one group of people in the world with more unbridled creativity, ready to push visual storytelling into places none of us have imagined yet: Kids.

Luckily, there’s a place where, for over a decade, music video makers — including The Daniels, Hiro Murai, Sandy Honig, Demi Adejuyigbe, and many others — have teamed up with L.A. County school kids for a weeklong summer filmmaking workshop, creating both original music videos and official ones for bands as wide-ranging as Daft Punk, Camila Cabello, Islands, Diplo, and St. Vincent.

Just because Celestina, the soon-to-be young wife in the “The Young Wife” told friends and family that while the honor of their presence was requested, they would be attending a party, not a wedding, doesn’t make it so. The weight of family, community and ritual aren’t so easily evaded. Or embraced.

So, on the day of her and River’s nuptials, she appears to be wrestling less with the meaning of marriage and more with the weight of the word “wife.” Warm hearts and cooling feet is nothing new for movies, of course, but Kiersey Clemons’ portrayal of Celestina — her head spinning — raises the stakes of love and liberty.

Writer-director Tayarisha Poe has populated her sophomore feature with characters of a neo-bohemian, united colors-of-who-the-fuck-cares aura. Hannah Einbinder doesn’t perform the stand-up comedy in Hacks — that falls to Jean Smart, who stars with Einbinder as veteran comic Deborah Vance — but that was her primary job before she landed the role on the Emmy-winning Max series as Ava, a struggling writer who reluctantly takes a job with Deborah and, over the course of the show’s three seasons, becomes both a confidant to the veteran comic and the object of Deborah’s most withering scorn.

Einbinder will take center stage herself in her first stand-up special, Everything Must Go, which premieres June 13 on Max. The hourlong set, filmed in April at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, covers everything from climate change to Einbinder’s days as a competitive cheerleader as a teenager, shot in a cinematic style by director Sandy Honig.

The 2024 Tribeca Festival has added 11 new feature films to its lineup — including a Hannah Einbinder standup special from Max — and has also set a world premiere of Michael Sarnoski’s A Quiet Place: Day One on June 26 in partnership with Paramount Pictures and Imax just ahead of the film’s theatrical release. The red carpet event is for Tribeca members as part of the organization’s push into year-round programming. It’s after the festival, which runs June 5-16.

Hacks star Hannah Einbinder is expanding her relationship with Max.

The comedian has set her first stand-up comedy special for the streamer behind the hit show.

Einbinder, aka Ava Daniels on Hacks, will perform in front of a live audience at the El Rey Theatre in L.A. on April 20 with the streamer set to air the special exclusively at a date to be determined in June. (Tickets for the show are already on sale.)

“It has always been my dream to monetize my coping mechanism. Thanks, Max!” Einbinder said.

The news of the special comes ahead of the third season return of Hacks on May 2. Einbinder has earned two Emmy nominations for her co-starring role opposite Jean Smart in the series. As a stand-up, Einbinder previously played festivals and assorted venues around the country. She made her stand-up debut in 2019 on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Austin, TX – The SXSW Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 19th, after 10 days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Raging Grace” as the top Narrative Feature and “Grown” as top TV Pilot.

“Raging Grace” was written and directed by Paris Zarcilla, telling the story of a Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter, with the jury noting its “heady blend of horror, history, and midnight humor announcing the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.” The TV Pilot “Grown” focuses on a teenage boy attempting to move forward after losing his father, and the jury said it was “a coming-of-age story told with heart and visually realized with polish and verve.”

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.

The 75th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday night, wrapping up the final weekend of guild awards before the Oscars next week. Both screenplay categories are tight at the Oscars, but not all the contenders were present at WGA.
