‘Hacks’ Renewed for Fifth Season at Max
Image
Hacks is entering the record books at Max.

The streamer has renewed the series for a fifth season, which will make Hacks the longest-running live-action show in Max’s (admittedly not very long) history. Series creators and showrunnners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky announced the renewal Tuesday evening at an Emmy FYC screening in Los Angeles.

The pickup for the Emmy-winning comedy from Universal Television comes two days before its fourth season finale. The current season has seen Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) realize her dream of hosting a late-night talk show — though with more strings attached than she would like — with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) as her head writer.

Hacks premiered in May 2021, when the streaming service where it runs was known as HBO Max. It has continued since the platform changed its name to Max in April 2023 — and with the renewal, season five will stream on...

‘Hacks’ Renewed for Season 5 Ahead of Season 4 Finale
Image
Max is doubling down on Deborah Vance. The streamer renewed its Emmy-winning comedy “Hacks” for a fifth season on Tuesday ahead of its Season 4 finale.

The comedy’s creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs and Jen Statsky learned of the renewal news last week.

“We’re thrilled to be able to make a fifth season of a comedy,” Downs told TheWrap in an interview that also included Aniello and Statsky. “It is a very rare thing now, which we wish weren’t the case. But we don’t take for granted how fortunate we are to get to do it. We were really excited because we’ve always known where we want the story to conclude, and so to be able to continue to build towards that is so satisfying.”

It’s no surprise that Max renewed “Hacks.” So far, the comedy has been nominated for 48 Primetime Emmys. The series...

CBS Comedy Series Ending After 2 Seasons, Reversing Recent Renewal
Image
The future was looking bright for the late-night comedy show After Midnight, as it had previously secured a renewal for another season. Unfortunately for fans, it's been revealed that Season 3 won't be moving forward after all.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, After Midnight is set to end after its current second season. CBS confirmed that the final episodes of the show ill air in June with no third season in the works. Its 12:35 a.m. time slot hasn't found a new replacement at this time, and it's still unclear if the network will hold onto that hour, or if it will go back to local stations' programming. The show was recently renewed for Season 3, but After Midnight will instead conclude with Season 2 so its host, Taylor Tomlinson, can turn her focus back to her stand-up comedy.

Tomlinson said in a statement, “Hosting After Midnight has genuinely been the experience of a lifetime,...

‘Hacks’ Season 4 Drops Blackmail-Filled Trailer Ahead of April Premiere
Image
“Hacks” Season 4 is picking up right where Season 3 left off: with Deborah and Ava on the edge of war. The latest installment of the Emmy-winning Max original comedy will premiere with its first two episodes on April 10.

“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl,” Deborah (Jean Smart) menacingly says in the new trailer out Tuesday, rounding on her prodigy.

“I guess I am,” Ava (Hannah Einbinder) replies. “It’s for the best.”

The clip then cuts between several high-energy scenes, from Deborah dancing in a club to both Deborah and Ava driving literal race cars. Kaitlin Olson’s very pregnant DJ can even be seen briefly weightlifting.

“Blackmail on day one? Not good!” Deborah and Ava’s manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) yells. “She’s been doing this for 50 years. You’re not going to beat her at her own game. Nobody beats Deborah.” Maybe, not yet.

If you need a refresher,...

‘Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go’ Fuses Stand-Up and Cinema as Only Adhd Can
Image
There are certain visual basics we expect comedy specials to have: Multiple angles of the comedian to bounce between and convey energy, a few crowd shots from the stage, maybe a cheeky little intro of the comedian getting ready to walk on from backstage. But that expected structure is not necessarily how Hannah Einbinder’s comedy works and, fittingly, it’s not how the comedian’s special, “Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go,” looks, either.

From the stylized drive beneath lit palm trees to the El Rey Theater that opens the special (and that the Los Angeles City Tourism Department should be so lucky to use), Einbinder and director Sandy Honig wanted to craft a fully cinematic space for the special to exist in — and a visual match for the leaps from weed and Adderall to embodying the Earth, sun, and moon to friendship betrayals in the 1930s that only Einbinder...

Omg Everywhere Is Music Video Summer Camp for Kids and Filmmakers Alike
Image
It’s been the case from Paul Thomas Anderson to Hiro Murai, but some of the best, and IndieWire’s favorite, filmmakers come out of making music videos. The short space and heightened expression of music videos allow for the kind of scrappy innovation, formal experimentation, and energetic construction that isn’t often allowed to exist in other visual forms. There’s maybe only one group of people in the world with more unbridled creativity, ready to push visual storytelling into places none of us have imagined yet: Kids.

Luckily, there’s a place where, for over a decade, music video makers — including The Daniels, Hiro Murai, Sandy Honig, Demi Adejuyigbe, and many others — have teamed up with L.A. County school kids for a weeklong summer filmmaking workshop, creating both original music videos and official ones for bands as wide-ranging as Daft Punk, Camila Cabello, Islands, Diplo, and St. Vincent.

Kiersey Clemons on The Young Wife and Her Canceled Zorro & DC Movies
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Kiersey Clemons continues to rise up the ranks in Hollywood, after starring in a pair of DC films and the MonsterVerse series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and also standing out in crowd-pleasing indie flicks like Dope and Susie Searches. It's no surprise, then, that she's got her own starring vehicle that has finally reached the masses after stirring up buzz at SXSW.

From writer-director Tayarisha Poe, The Young Wife is now available on digital and is the perfect date-night flick for couples... who don't want a typical date-night flick. Just as 500 Days of Summer is self-described by its narrator as "not a love story, but a story about love," Clemons has gone on the record and called her artistic new drama an "anti-wedding wedding movie." Watch as her titular heroine Celestina navigates overbearing friends, family, and coworkers all the while trying not to spiral on emotional,...

‘The Young Wife’ Review: The Nervous Bride Saga Gets a Sumptuous, Stylized Makeover
Image
Just because Celestina, the soon-to-be young wife in the “The Young Wife” told friends and family that while the honor of their presence was requested, they would be attending a party, not a wedding, doesn’t make it so. The weight of family, community and ritual aren’t so easily evaded. Or embraced.

So, on the day of her and River’s nuptials, she appears to be wrestling less with the meaning of marriage and more with the weight of the word “wife.” Warm hearts and cooling feet is nothing new for movies, of course, but Kiersey Clemons’ portrayal of Celestina — her head spinning — raises the stakes of love and liberty.

Writer-director Tayarisha Poe has populated her sophomore feature with characters of a neo-bohemian, united colors-of-who-the-fuck-cares aura. Guests arrive with sartorial flash, expressive finery, hairdos that signal independence for days and attitudes that combine and recombine the traditional with the rebellious.

The Young Wife Review | Beautifully Chaotic Wedding Saga Will Strike a Nerve
Image
Prepare for chaos and emotional turmoil in the extremely artful and messy film The Young Wife, with a phenomenal Kiersey Clemons. The Young Wife speaks to the anxieties of many people through its resonant dialogue and chaotic scenes, constructed with stylish editing and cinematography. Leon Bridges stars but is unfortunately not present enough in this darkly funny but intense day-in-the-life drama.

If you're already married, how might you describe your wedding weekend? Beautiful? Chaotic? Stressful? All the above? And if you haven't yet tied the knot, perhaps you have a certain idea of who would be there. In-laws. Parents. Childhood pals. Friendly co-workers. Neighbors. Exes? The list goes on. Would everyone get along, if placed in one location for one afternoon, with various histories and emotions? Cramped, stepping around each other, trying to get the same person's attention again and again and again? If your blood pressure spikes a bit just reading these words,...

‘Hacks’ Star Hannah Einbinder Teases Her Debut Stand-Up Special: See the Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
Hannah Einbinder doesn’t perform the stand-up comedy in Hacks — that falls to Jean Smart, who stars with Einbinder as veteran comic Deborah Vance — but that was her primary job before she landed the role on the Emmy-winning Max series as Ava, a struggling writer who reluctantly takes a job with Deborah and, over the course of the show’s three seasons, becomes both a confidant to the veteran comic and the object of Deborah’s most withering scorn.

Einbinder will take center stage herself in her first stand-up special, Everything Must Go, which premieres June 13 on Max. The hourlong set, filmed in April at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, covers everything from climate change to Einbinder’s days as a competitive cheerleader as a teenager, shot in a cinematic style by director Sandy Honig.

The show is called Everything Must Go, Einbinder says, because “I’m essentially...

The comedian has set her first stand-up comedy special for the streamer behind the hit show.

Einbinder, aka Ava Daniels on Hacks, will perform in front of a live audience at the El Rey Theatre in L.A. on April 20 with the streamer set to air the special exclusively at a date to be determined in June. (Tickets for the show are already on sale.)

“It has always been my dream to monetize my coping mechanism. Thanks, Max!” Einbinder said.

Who Voices Cleopatra in Clone High Season 2?
Image
Twenty years after its first season aired on MTV, Clone High has returned to the airwaves to make audiences laugh, shiver and cry. Season 2 sees angst-filled teens Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan) and JFK (Christopher Miller) revived in the modern era, facing a new world of changing social landscapes and new technology. Joining them on this journey are new clones of Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Harriet Tubman (Ayo Edibiri), Confucius (Kelvin Yu) and Christopher Columbus (Neil Young), who tries to distance himself from his controversial "clonefather" by taking the name Topher Bus.

However, not all of Clone High's main students have made the transition to 2023. Ghandi (Michael McDonald) has been written out of the series, owing to the controversial nature of the character. His absence is explained by the rest of the cast simply forgetting to unfreeze him along with the other students. Cleopatra, meanwhile, has made the jump to modernity,...

SXSW2023: ‘Raging Grace’ is Top Film at SXSW TV & Film Fest
Image
Austin, TX – The SXSW Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 19th, after 10 days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Raging Grace” as the top Narrative Feature and “Grown” as top TV Pilot.

“Raging Grace” was written and directed by Paris Zarcilla, telling the story of a Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter, with the jury noting its “heady blend of horror, history, and midnight humor announcing the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.” The TV Pilot “Grown” focuses on a teenage boy attempting to move forward after losing his father, and the jury said it was “a coming-of-age story told with heart and visually realized with polish and verve.”

The following is the list of top honorees …

‘The Young Wife’ Review: ‘Selah & the Spades’ Director Tayarisha Poe Sends a Zany Marital Missive from the Future
Image
A slow-motion panic attack in movie form, “The Young Wife” swirls around the hopes and doubts of a young woman (a radiant Kiersey Clemons) on the day of her “non-wedding.” It’s not a moment of matrimony, nor is it quite a commitment ceremony, but instead a day-long party, a celebration of the love between Celestina and her wishy-washy boyfriend River (Leon Bridges), who’s hours late. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, “The Young Wife” is , and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.

The director is Tayarisha Poe, who made waves at Sundance in 2019 for her confidently directed feature debut “Selah and the Spades,” a deftly choreographed ensemble piece about the underground factions of a fictional boarding school. Here, with “The Young Wife,” Poe...

SXSW: ‘Raging Grace’ Takes Top Honors In Narrative Feature Competition – Winners List

‘Raging Grace,’ ‘Angel Applicant’ Top SXSW Film Festival Awards
Image
Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.

Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?

With five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened to present the winners.

Narrative feature honors went to writer-director Paris Zarcilla’s “Raging Grace.” On the surface, the tense story of an undocumented Filipina house cleaner and...

WGA Awards: ‘Everything Everywhere ‘ and ‘Women Talking’ win without facing closest Oscar competition
Image
The 75th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday night, wrapping up the final weekend of guild awards before the Oscars next week. Both screenplay categories are tight at the Oscars, but not all the contenders were present at WGA.

That’s because the guild’s strict rules disqualify a number of scripts every year. This year, ineligible original screenplays include Oscar nominees “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Triangle of Sadness,” as well as “Aftersun,” “Rrr” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” Oscar nominees “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Living” are among the ineligible adapted scripts, which also include “The Whale,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and “The Quiet Girl.”

The WGA’s original screenplay nominees are “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert), “The Fabelmans (Steven Spielberg & Tony Kushner), “The Menu” (Seth Reiss & Will Tracy), “Nope” (Jordan Peele...
