‘Nocturnal Animals’ (Courtesy: Merrick Morton/Focus Features)

By: Carson Blackwelder

Managing Editor

This year’s contenders for best adapted screenplay are quite the eclectic group based on their sources — something that can never be said for those competing for best original screenplay. When looking at this category’s past since the year 2000, can history dictate which type of adapted screenplays the Academy might be leaning toward at the 2017 Oscars?

This site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, honed in on nine films considered either frontrunners (the first five) or major threats (the last four) in his latest check-in on the Oscar race: Moonlight, Lion, Fences, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, Sully, Silence, and Loving. The original sources for these films are as varied as the subject matter in the works they inspired, so let’s break them down.

As for frontrunners: Moonlight, written and directed by Barry Jenkins,...

Tom Hanks Gets a Fake Biopic Trailer with the Real Sully
Tom Hanks in Sully (2016)
The true story adaptation Sully hits theaters this weekend, with two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks playing Captain Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who averted disaster in 2009 by landing his plane on the Hudson River in what became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson." Both Tom Hanks and the real Sully appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, but the host had a surprise for the actor. Sully and Jimmy Kimmel debuted a fake trailer for the Tom Hanks "biopic" simply entitled Hanks, starring Chesley Sullenberger as the beloved actor.

This four-minute video from Jimmy Kimmel Live goes back to Tom Hanks early acting days, with a producer claiming that Tom Hanks isn't a "movie star name." The video itself even features a surprise appearance from Peter Scolari, Tom Hanks' co-star on the hit 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies, which helped launch his career. The video also showcases some of the actor's "epic struggles,...

Sully Movie Review: Clint Eastwood Teaches Heroism 101 to 'the Pussy Generation'
'Sully' movie with Tom Hanks as pilot Chesley Sullenberger: Clint Eastwood homage to 'the durable, honorable American male.' 'Sully' movie review: 'Taut, straightforward' drama features Clint Eastwood's latest all-American hero When considering Sully, Clint Eastwood's taut, straightforward account of heroism on trial, it helps to remember that the title character's name works as both noun and verb. And one can see how Eastwood was drawn to both meanings. The noun, of course, is the nickname of airline pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew on January 15, 2009, by pulling off a daring water landing after a flock of birds took out both engines of his Us Airways flight minutes after it took off from New York's Laguardia airport. The Sully depicted here is, like many Eastwood heroes, made of uniquely American clay; a sturdy, rigorous material that the director,...

Sully Review: Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood Fly at a Low Altitude
Tom Hanks in Sully (2016)
Clint Eastwood's adaptation of the "Miracle on the Hudson" isn't quite as riveting as hoped. Sully is fairly acted by the players, but runs short with a few scenes that come off as contrived. Also, and this is purely my emotional point of view as a New Yorker, imagined scenes of the plane crashing into the city invoke sad memories of 9/11. That's the point of course, to relay how close the miracle was to a horrendous tragedy. The release date so close to 9/11 is a marketing decision that plays on those feelings. Strikes me as a bit cheap, although the point is true.

On January 15, 2009, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was hit by a double bird strike shortly after leaving La Guardia Airport. With both engines lost, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) pulled off an unparalleled feat in aviation history. Landing the plane on the Hudson River with zero casualties.

Tom Hanks Faces an Investigation in IMAX Trailer For Clint Eastwood’s ‘Sully’
After coming off what is far and away the biggest success of his career at the box-office, American Sniper, director Clint Eastwood is taking on another biopic of sorts with Sully. The drama follows the true story of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who glided his plane along the Hudson River, saving the life of all those aboard in an event often referred to as the Miracle on the Hudson. Ahead of a release in a few weeks, an IMAX trailer has now landed.

Tom Hanks stars as Sullenberger, with a cast rounded off by Anna Gunn, Aaron Eckhart, Sam Huntington, and Laura Linney. Shot by long-time collaborating Dp Tom Stern, who has lensed all of Eastwood’s recent efforts, this time they’ve used IMAX cameras for nearly entire shoot. One can now see the results on your relatively tiny computer screen with the new trailer or you can hold off...

Sully: Tom Hanks Is Seconds From Disaster In New TV Spots For Oscar-Tipped Thriller
From one remarkable true-life tale to another, American Sniper helmer and all-round film legend Clint Eastwood will be back behind the lens later this year for Sully, a cinematic white-knuckle ride that recounts the Miracle of the Hudson.

Placing Tom Hanks in the shoes of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Eastwood’s biopic chronicles the doomed journey of Us Airways Flight 1549, which was forced into an emergency water landing seven years ago after losing power to all engines.

Lifting inspiration from Sullenberger’s own memoir Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters – one he penned along with Jeffrey Zaslow – Sully focuses on the pilot’s personal life and trauma just as much as the miracle itself, as air safety investigators begin to pour over each and every detail of the emergency landing, with some even going so far as to call the pilot’s actions into question.

With Tom Hanks aboard as the captain,...

Tom Hanks Is Circling Captain Sully Role
The world was stunned when Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger landed a damaged Airbus A320 on the Hudson River in New York City on January 15th 2009. The pilot became an instant icon, and the incident immediately passed into legend. Now, Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood is set to bring the story to the big screen for Warner Bros, and fellow Academy Award winner Tom Hanks is apparently in talks to take the lead role. The only surprising thing about this is the fact that it’s taken so long to get to it.

Captain Sullenberger learned to fly at the age of 16, later becoming a fighter pilot in the Us Air Force. He quickly progressed to the rank of Captain, and also served on an accident investigation board. Joining Us Airways – previously Pacific Southwest Airlines – in 1980, Sullenberger later went on to found a safety, management and reliability consulting firm, named Safety...

The retelling will be based on the book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow.

Eastwood is directing the biopic alongside Todd Komarnicki, who has devised the screenplay, as well as Frank Marshall and Allyn Stewart in the producer seats.

Tom Hanks And Clint Eastwood May Join Forces For A Heroic Story
When it was announced earlier this month that Clint Eastwood was going to make a movie about Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and the "Miracle on the Hudson," our ears perked up - as happens when a high profile director signs on to a high profile film. Now the project has gotten infinitely more impressive, however, as Tom Hanks is now in talks to play the lead role in the movie. Deadline has the scoop on the story, saying that negotiations are still on-going to have Hanks sign on to the movie - which doesn't appear to have a title at this time. The movie is being based on the book "Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters," that was written by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow, and Todd Komarnicki (Perfect Stranger) has been tapped by Warner Bros. to write the script. For those that don't remember, Captain Sullenberger is famous...

Clint Eastwood Piloting Captain Sully Sullenberger Biopic
After American Sniper became a stunning box office success for Warner Bros. early this year, the studio has set its director Clint Eastwood for another biopic. The prolific filmmaker will helm an untitled film that tells the true story of Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, the American pilot who heroically landed a filled plane in the Hudson River after it malfunctioned mid-flight.

Sullenberger became a national hero back in 2009 when he pulled off a tricky emergency landing in the Hudson River off Manhattan when his aircraft, climbing out of Laguardia Airport, struck a flock of Canadian geese, disabling both engines. All passengers and crew members survived the landing.

Producer Frank Marshall acquired the rights to Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow’s book back in 2010 and has been developing the project ever since. Allyn Stewart is also attached to produce.

Clint Eastwood to Direct Biopic of Capt. Sully Sullenberger
Fresh off his take on the life of Chris Kyle in "American Sniper," director Clint Eastwood will tackle another high-profile American.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Eastwood will follow up his Oscar-nominated film with a biopic centered around Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger. In January 2009, Sullenberger piloted U.S. Airways Flight 1549, which experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff from New York City's Laguardia Aiport. Sullenberger was able to land the plane safely in the waters of the Hudson River, and his quick thinking -- and avoidance of any injury to plane's 155 passengers -- landed him international fame and the admiration.

Sullenberger parlayed that limelight into a book deal, and in 2010 released "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters," which he co-authored with the late Jeffrey Zaslow. "Highest Duty" serves as the inspiration for Eastwood's as-yet-untitled biopic, with screenwriter Todd Komarnicki penning the script.

"I am very glad my story...
