In 2009, the U.S. cargo ship, Maersk Alabama, was boarded by four Somali pirates who proceeded to hijack the vessel before escaping on a lifeboat with the ship's captain, Richard Phillips. What followed was a days-long ordeal in which Phillips was held captive on the lifeboat, fighting for his life whilst awaiting Navy intervention. Given the nature of these events, it wasn’t long until a dramatization materialized in the form of Paul Greengrass’s action-thriller, Captain Phillips.

Based on Phillips' book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy Seals, and Dangerous Days at Sea, the film debuted in 2013 to critical acclaim and box office success, leaving audiences on the very edge of their seats for the duration of this tantalizingly tense movie. The Rome Film Festival (October 17-27) has unveiled its 2019 official selection, which includes Downton Abbey, Waves, Judy, The Aeronauts, Hustlers and Werner Herzog documentary Nomad[/link] about writer Bruce Chatwin.

A total of 33 films and documentaries will play in the official lineup (full list below). As previously announced, the fest will open with Edward Norton’s Motherless Brooklyn while Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman will have a centerpiece screening. Only two Italian movies are included in the main selection.

The festival also revealed a pre-opening October 16 world premiere for John Turturro’s anticipated The Big Lebowski spinoff, The Jesus Rolls, which follows Lebowski character Jesus Quintana.

However, it's the final 10-15 minutes where you stop being aware you're actually watching a movie and are thoroughly entrenched in the ordeal at hand. Based on the true story of the titular commander of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked in 2009 by a crew of Somali pirates, there is an ebb and flow to Captain Phillips that does result in some down moments. The plot occasionally seems to be spinning in circles and small portions could have been snipped, but by the time the credits roll you'll only be left thinking of the devastating state you were left in with everything else just a blur. Strong performances from the lead actors as well Greengrass’ intelligent depiction of neglected people helps draws us in, but the film tries too hard to play up the “thrilling” action, which only highlights how little investment we have in the hostage and his captor. Last year saw a major motion picture that exemplified the best of a sub-genre of the “based on true events” film, it was based on a true event that was very recent. The finale of Zero Dark Thirty occurred less than five years ago. And even though we were aware of the outcome, Zero was as riveting as any fictional thriller (much like last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner Argo, which did have over thirty years of distance). This year brings another such film, Captain Phillips. Although it dominated the headlines just four years ago, director Paul Greengrass and his crew have delivered a taut, tension filled docudrama that places us right in the thick of the life-or-death struggle for survival. Big news in 2009, the hijacking of a Us cargo ship by Somali pirates was especially striking because of the scale of the rescue operation. In the end though, it's the will of one man to defy his captors that makes this dramatised account so utterly staggering, with every moment of the four-day ordeal brilliantly wrung out by British Bourne director Paul Greengrass and star Tom Hanks.

That's not to say the drama is overplayed. In a masterclass of filmmaking, Greengrass keeps a sparing, grounded approach and Hanks is right there with him, never having to say what's on his mind because it's made evident and palpable.

The programme for the 57th BFI London Film Festival was recently announced, with the BFI’s Head of Cinemas and Festivals, Clare Stewart, returning for her second year with a rich and diverse group of international films and events from established and upcoming talent over a 12-day celebration of cinema.

The Festival will screen 234 fiction and documentary features, including 22 World Premieres, 16 International Premieres, 29 European Premieres, and 20 Archive films. There will also be screenings of 134 live-action and animated shorts. A stellar line-up of directors, cast and crew are expected to take part in career interviews, master classes, and other special events. The Opening Night Film is an important choice for any festival, particularly amongst the handful on the major festival circuit – namely, Sundance, Venice, Tiff, SXSW, Cannes, Lff, and so on. With just over two months left on the clock, the BFI London Film Festival have announced that Paul Greengrass’ highly anticipated Captain Phillips has been chosen as the Opening Night Gala, kicking off the festival on 9th October at the Odeon Leicester Square.

The movie, which debuted its first trailer a few months back, will have its European premiere at the festival, having recently been set to open the New York Film Festival at the end of September as well.

Tom Hanks is front and centre on this true-story thriller, and smart money says that he’ll be an Oscar contender for Best Actor for the first time since his nomination in 2001 for Cast Away.

The 57th BFI London Film Festival (Oct 9-20) will open on October 9 at the Odeon Leicester Square with Paul Greengrass’ anticipated thriller Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks.

Sony’s likely awards contender charts the 2009 hijacking of the Us container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates.

Tom Hanks has been widely tipped for awards recognition for his portrayal of Phillips, who becomes engaged in a tense standoff with his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi).

Hanks and Greengrass will both attend the festival.

Billy Ray’s screenplay is based on the book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. Producers are Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca.

Sony releases the film in UK cinemas on 18 October.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, the thriller tells the true story of a Us container ship, Maersk Alabama, that was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.

Tom Hanks stars as the Alabama's commanding officer Captain Richard Phillips, whose relationship with the Somali commanding officer (Barkhad Abdi) is central to the film.

Catherine Kenner plays Phillips' wife, while Somali-American actors Faysal Ahmed, Barkhad Addirahman and Mahat M Ali round out the cast.

The screenplay was written by The Hunger Games scriptwriter Billy Ray, and is based on Phillips' and Stephan Talty's book A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea.

The 57th BFI London Film Festival runs from October 9 to October 20.

Another awards season hopeful has slotted into the calendar after it emerged on Monday [29] that the world premiere of Paul Greengrass’ Somali hijacking thriller starring Tom Hanks will open the 51st New York Film Festival on Sept 27.

The story is based on the 2009 incident in which Somali pirates took control of the Us container ship Maersk Alabama. Somali newcomers Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Barkhad Abdirahman and Mahat M Ali star alongside Hanks.

Billy Ray adapted the screenplay from Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, And Dangerous Days At Sea by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti and Mike De Luca produced. Sony Pictures has set an Oct 11 release date.

Captain Phillips will mark Greengrass’ return to Nyff following the 2002 screening of Bloody Sunday.
