9 Years Ago, Glen Powell Had a Great Performance in the Certified Fresh Spiritual Sequel to Dazed and Confused
Image
The hangout movie is one of the most underrated genres of film, spanning back decades. To quote visionary and legendary modern filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, when discussing the Howard Hawks film Rio Bravo in a private screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, hangout movies, "are certain movies that you hang out with the characters so much that they actually become your friends. And that’s a really rare quality to have in a film…because it actually takes that long of a time to get past a movie character where you actually feel that you know the person and you like them…when it’s over, they’re your friends.”

The modern master of the hangout movie is almost certainly Richard Linklater, whose varied filmography includes comedy classics like School of Rock, Oscar winners like Boyhood and romantic comedies like Hit Man. One of his best films of all time,...

Image
Everybody Wants Some!! was released seven years ago, and it wasn’t a box office success, but with every year that passes, this Richard Linklater masterpiece is gaining more cult status and has become a great, rewatchable movie, as with every new viewing you can see a new joke, conversation, or moment that’s much better than you remembered.

The director was a recruited baseball player when he was young, and puts all his great memories of those experiences in this film. He included the team, living on campus in 1980s Texas, hanging out with the other players, dancing, meeting women, and being as competitive as possible at everything with every teammate. ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ Review
Stars: Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Ryan Guzman, Juston Street, Wyatt Russell, Glen Powell, Temple Baker, J. Quinton Johnson, Will Brittain, Zoey Deutch | Written and Directed by Richard Linklater

The career of Richard Linklater has been a rather fascinating rollercoaster off ups and downs, very much mostly ups, though the period between School of Rock and Before Midnight was not the best but after the high of the one/two punch of Before Midnight and Boyhood, the world was his oyster (well maybe up to a certain level of budget!) To go back to college with what has been termed a spiritual sequel to Dazed & Confused was a brave decision. Get it wrong and accusations of playing it safe or going back to the well would probably be heard by reactionary types across the Film Twitter-sphere. This is not the world of Celine & Jessie for damn sure and Patricia Arquette won...

Movie Review: Everybody Wants Some!!
Adolescence gets a loudmouthed love letter with Everybody Wants Some!!, the latest outing from writer/director Richard Linklater. Dropping the grandiose ambition of Boyhood (2014) and returning to his Dazed and Confused (1993) groove, the Texas filmmaker takes fans back to the days of crop tops, Van Halen, and mustaches to die for. Marketed as a “spiritual sequel” to the stoner classic, and swapping out the last day of school for the weekend before class, Everybody Wants Some!! funnels its story through the keg stand of a college baseball team. As such, former athlete Linklater straps the gloves on and knocks this hilarious outing clear over the center field fence.

From the very start, this movie puts out good vibes. With “My Sharona” thumping through stereo speakers, freshman Jake Bradford (Blake Jenner) cruises into college town circa 1980, flowing with loud personas and even louder hairstyles. Put up in a boarding house with his teammates,...

Tyler Hoechlin, Wyatt Russell, Glen Powell, Zoey Deutch, Austin Amelio, Blake Jenner, Will Brittain, Ryan Guzman, Juston Street, Forrest Vickery, Temple Baker, and J. Quinton Johnson in Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
Review: Linklater nails another anthropological comedy with 'Everybody Wants Some!!'
Tyler Hoechlin, Wyatt Russell, Glen Powell, Zoey Deutch, Austin Amelio, Blake Jenner, Will Brittain, Ryan Guzman, Juston Street, Forrest Vickery, Temple Baker, and J. Quinton Johnson in Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
If I had to estimate how many times I’ve seen Richard Linklater’s Dazed & Confused since it was released in 1993, I’d be willing to bet it’s over three dozen by now. I adore the film, and it’s one of those movies that has grown over time for me. The more I’ve gone back to it, the longer I’ve lived with it, the more I’ve found in it. That movie has a cast that was largely unknown at the time but that has gone on to look almost overstuffed with star power. It is a remarkable ensemble, and even the kids who didn’t go on to further work or bigger stardom did work that has aged beautifully. I never got around to seeing a trailer for this one. In fact, it almost feels like Paramount’s sneaking it out. It just premiered at SXSW,...

Ranking the films of Richard Linklater so far
It might have something to do with how much I love Everybody Wants Some, but I’m still thinking about Richard Linklater and his career to date. Yes, I touched on that a bit last week, and previously in 2014 when Boyhood was making its way through the awards season, but I’m not quite done just yet. There’s something about Linklater that has me constantly thinking about and re-evaluating his films. Interestingly enough, his flicks tend to be ones that lend themselves nicely to introspection/retrospection. In doing this, one of the things I’ve actually come up with is that he’s actually yet to make a bad movie, despite having a nearly 20 deep filmography. As such, it made perfect sense to rank his films today, showing you just how varied yet consistent he is as a director. It’s really quite something to behold, at least in my eyes…...

New Trailer and Clip For Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!!
I’ve enjoyed the films that director Richard Linklater has made of the years, but one of my favorites is easily Dazed and Confused. So I’m very excited about his next film Everybody Wants Some!! because it is described as being a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused.

The story is set in the world of 1980 college life, and it’s “a comedy that follows a group of friends as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.” It comes along with the tagline, “Get ready for the best weekend ever.”

A new trailer and clip have been released for the film, which looks great! Not only does it look good, but it’s been getting a ton of positive buzz and currently hold a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It looks to me like Linklater has made another classic.

The movie stars Blake Jenner, Glen Powell,...

Film Review: ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ Gets Lost in Misty Nostalgia
Chicago – When the first strains of “My Sharona” by The Knack come out of the car speakers of a dude going to college in 1980, as “Everybody Wants Some!!” began, my do-you-remember-when sense tingled. The film’s story, unfortunately, could not match that feeling of nostalgia.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Written and directed by the great Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”) as a “spiritual sequel” to his cult masterwork, “Dazed and Confused” (1993), the new film has the same joy of youth that its predecessor had, but its episodic vignettes about a college baseball team bonding in their off-campus housing, on the first three days of college in Fall of 1980, doesn’t have the same cohesiveness and feeling of time/place. This could be due to the young cast having the impossible task of living a youth like their parents did, or Linklater’s inability to get some distance from his own nostalgia, but the movie in...

New Trailer And Clips For Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some Spotlight College Shenanigans
With much of the Northern Hemisphere welcoming Daylight Savings – and longer Spring evenings as a result – today’s nostalgic new trailer for Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some dovetails nicely with the promise of warmer weather and evenings spent revelling with friends.

And that’s exactly what the cast of Linklater’s college drama get up to in the snippet above. Arriving in tandem with a pair of new clips for the director’s spiritual successor to Dazed & Confused, here we see the likes of Blake Jenner, Glen Powell and Wyatt Russell stumble from adolescence to adulthood, sipping beer cans and fantasize about the future in the process.

As today’s new trailers prove, Will Brittain and Ryan Guzman star as a pair of unruly disco-dancing Texans, flanked by a cast that includes Tyler Hoechlin, Quinton Johnson, Austin Amelio, Forrest Vickery, Temple Baker, Tanner Kalina, Juston Street, and Zoey Deutch.

“Everybody Wants Some” is one of the year’s biggest delights
I knew going in to see Richard Linklater’s new film Everbody Wants Some earlier this week that it was likely to appeal to me. What I didn’t expect was a near masterpiece and perhaps an instant cult classic. I absolutely adored this movie and really think it’s among the best titles of 2016 so far. Linklater has made something that’s not just a worthy companion piece/spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused, but something that even continues some of the themes explored in Boyhood. This is another top notch effort that shows his current filmmaking to be at near master status. This is a special film. The movie looks at the first weekend at college for freshman pitcher Jake Bradford (Blake Jenner). We basically just follow him as he meets his teammates, including Glenn McReynolds (Tyler Hoechlin), Willoughby (Wyatt Russell), Billy Autry (Will Brittain), Dale Douglas (J.

Welcome To College: Check Out New Trailer And Clips For Richard Linklater's 'Everybody Wants Some!!'
Releasing a movie about getting ready for college, as everyone who is in school is eager to leave for the summer might seem like a counterintuitive move. But like its spiritual predecessor "Dazed & Confused," Richard Linklater's "Everybody Wants Some!!" is just right for warmer weather. Blake Jenner, Glen Powell, Wyatt Russell, Ryan Guzman, Quinton Johnson, Austin Amelio, Forrest Vickery, Temple Baker, Tanner Kalina, Juston Street, and Zoey Deutch are the ensemble gang in this one about those halcyon days of '80s college life, when the live between adolescence and adulthood was marked by a stack of empty beers cans and pizza boxes. Here's the official synopsis: A “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused set in the world of 1980 college life, Everybody Wants Some is a comedy that follows a group of friends as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. Get ready for the best weekend ever.

Milla Jovovich, Rory Cochrane, Sasha Jenson, and Jason London in Dazed and Confused (1993)
You Are Definitely Going to Want Some of Everybody Wants Some!!: Read People's Review
Milla Jovovich, Rory Cochrane, Sasha Jenson, and Jason London in Dazed and Confused (1993)
One could view Everybody Wants Some!! from an anthropological perspective, given its meticulous study of heterosexual college males in their natural state, circa 1980, often engaged in establishing social hierarchy or the pursuit of mating. Or, you could just go and have a damned good time. I strongly suggest the latter. Director Richard Linklater's "spiritual sequel" to Dazed and Confused ('93), Everybody Wants Some!!, is so good-natured and sweet, so confident in its understanding of time and place, so unrelentingly funny, you won't want to leave. Blake Jenner stars as Jake, a freshman pitcher at a fictitious Texas college, who...

[SXSW Review] Everybody Wants Some!!
Near the end of his essay for the Criterion release of Dazed and Confused, Kent Jones writes, “[Richard] Linklater has a keen, poetic memory for exactly how we did nothing.” Like the best American directors, Linklater understands that the roots of Americana are in a formless wandering, one that was as often about bullshit as transcendence.

Everybody Wants Some!!, the spiritual sequel to his 1993 feature, is another rumination on transition, following the residents of a baseball house the weekend before classes at an unspecified college in 1980. It’s a weekend bacchanalia filled with rule-breaking parties, masculinity endurance tests, hotboxed bedrooms, closed-door hookups, and the flickers of a romance that could be about more than getting off.

Echoing the platonically ’70s ripples of “Sweet Emotion” in its predecessor, Everybody Wants Some!! opens with the stomping snares of “My Sharona.” It’s the dawn of a new era as the easy-going, sneakily joyful...

Everybody Wants Some Review [SXSW 2016]
A bass drum kicks. The hum of reverberations buzz through a sound system. A guitar bangs some chords. A crowd waits with bated breath. Chills begin to run up their collective spine, as they wait to be transported through sound and choreography. No, I’m not describing the first concert for SXSW’s Music programming: I’m talking about opening night for SXSW’s Film section, and Richard Linklater’s rockin’ 80s throwback, Everybody Wants Some.

God bless Linklater for creating a movie that’s not only nostalgic and hilarious, but for telling a story that makes you feel something deep. Everybody Wants Some, named after the salacious Van Halen song, is, on the surface, a story about horny dudes yearning to slay some wild poon. Alpha males on the prowl. But, within one beautiful exchange of conversation, Linklater reveals a much softer, more fulfilling core to an otherwise frathouse period piece.

Watch The First Trailer For Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some
Here’s your first look at the new trailer and posters for Richard Linklater’s college-theme movie Everybody Wants Some. This follow-up film arrives more than 20 years after the original and is the “spiritual sequel” to Dazed And Confused.

The movie will make its World Premiere on Friday, March 11, 2016 during the 23rd edition of the SXSW Film Festival.

Linklater says of his new film, “If you look at Mitch, Wiley Wiggins’s character in Dazed who pitches in that pony league game, this is him, four years later, going off to college. Say he got better at baseball and he’s off to college. It would be right then — 1980.” He adds, “I’m reclaiming songs like ‘Rapper’s Delight’ and ‘My Sharona’ – you know, songs from ’79 and’80 that people have been making fun of for a while. I’m back to the original intent of those songs, like what they felt like then.
