Odds favour Cup favourites Brazil with Neymar raring to rewrite history
Image
New Delhi, Nov 19 (Ians) The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be underway this weekend with the host nation kicking off the campaign against Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday.

Brazil are currently ranked No. 1 in FIFA Rankings and is the favourite to lift the trophy. It’s been two decades since they got their hands on the most prestigious prize in world football. Brazil had last won the World Cup in 2002 when it was hosted by Japan and Korea, beating Germany 2-0 in the final.

The Selecao are on a 15-match unbeaten run entering the World Cup, dating to their last loss at the Copa America final against Argentina. Neymar continues to show his dominant performance for Paris Saint-Germain with 11 goals and nine assists in Ligue 1.

After a disappointing end to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil due to injury, Neymar had a point to prove in Russia in 2018. However,...

Brazil name Dani Alves in 26-member World Cup squad
Image
Rio de Janeiro, Nov 8 (Ians) Brazil manager Tite has named 39-year-old defender Dani Alves in his squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the South American country’s football confederation said on Monday.

The 26-man list also includes Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, Real Madrid attackers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, and veteran Chelsea center-back Thiago Silva.

But there was no place for Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who was left out after suffering a thigh injury while training last week. Also missing was Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, despite his impressive start to the season for the Premier League club, Xinhua reports.

Tite called up 12 Premier League players, including Manchester United’s Casemiro, Antony and Fred, and Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

Alves’ inclusion comes despite having played just 12 games for Mexican club Pumas this season and the fact he is just six months shy of his 40th birthday.

Premier League: Arsenal beat Spurs in derby to maintain lead; Chelsea overcome Palace
Image
London, Oct 2 (Ians) Goals from Thomas Partey, Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka ensured derby day delight for Arsenal as the Gunners beat arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 to maintain their top spot in the Premier League table.

Partey’s wonderful strike from distance set Arsenal on their way, and despite a Harry Kane penalty ensuring the sides went in level at half-time, a poacher’s effort from Jesus restored their lead four minutes into the second half.

Emerson Royal was then red carded for the visitors and soon after Xhaka drove in a third to secure a third straight home victory for Arsenal in this fixture for the first time since 2013.

The win helped Arsenal move up to 21 points from eight games — seven wins and one defeat — leading Manchester City by four points. On Sunday, City will have a chance to reduce the margin when they take on arch-rivals Manchester United in a derby.
