‘Cherry’ Review: A Coming-of-Age Indie Tackles a Timely Issue With Smarts and Sensitivity

The hot-button issue of abortion is approached in a humane, meaningful way in “Cherry,” an intimate dramedy about a young woman forced to make the toughest decision of her life in a very short timeframe. Making immediate her emotional and physical struggles as she explores whether or not to keep her baby, the film wins us over with an unwavering focus on its eponymous heroine’s coming-of-age journey. Timely subject matter aside, this briskly-paced, clean-lined feature is an assured debut for French-born director Sophie Galibert. After picking up an audience award at last year’s Tribeca fest, “Cherry” opens in select U.S. theaters April 14, with digital platforms to follow the week after.

Tribeca Prize-Winning Abortion Dramedy ‘Cherry’ Acquired By Entertainment Squad

Exclusive: Entertainment Squad has picked up North American rights to the critically acclaimed coming-of-age comedy Cherry, which won an Audience Award at SXSW last year upon its bow in the Online Premieres section. The film directed by Sophie Galibert and starring Alexandria Trewhitt (From Scratch) is slated for release in theaters this spring.

Written by Galibert, Arthur Cohen and Anne-Claire Jaulin, Cherry follows a young woman (Trewhitt) who has 24 hours to make the most important decision of her life: whether or not to keep an unplanned pregnancy.

Five promising young filmmakers are heading to Emergence - Production / Funding - France
The 22nd session of the film direction residency will lend support to first feature films put forward by Nathalie Saugeon, Jean-Baptiste Durand, Emmanuel Laskar, Pierre Mazingarbe and Edouard Salier. Selected by a jury presided over, this year, by Jean-Bernard Marlin, five young filmmakers have been chosen to participate in the 22nd session of the film direction residency intitled Emergence, a unique initiative in Europe which will provide the selected few with an opportunity to film two sequences of their first feature films, as well as offering them a mentor in the form of an established director, support in all things artistic, not to mention professional help with production.
