Netflix’s ‘Q-Force’ Is A Mixed Bag of Spy Fun and Tired Jokes
Image
Photo: ‘Q-Force’ Netflix and Adult Swim have been the places to go for animated series for adults, with Adult Swim’s successful ‘Rick and Morty’ and Netflix’s critical darling ‘BoJack Horseman’. Netflix has recently added a new series to its adult cartoon lineup with ‘Q-Force’, a half-hour series that follows a secret agent group of LGBT+ spies trying to save the world. While the series received poor initial reactions from its trailer, it’s always important to not judge a piece of art on its often soulless marketing. Is ‘Q-Force’ as bad as its initial trailer? No, it definitely isn’t, but it is a mixed bag of good plotlines, bad jokes, and some tired gay stereotypes. Image
HBO Max launches May 27 with a library of 10,000 hours of existing content, as well as the first three episodes of “Love Life,” the first of many primetime-style scripted series for the streaming service. Creator Sam Boyd reveals about the title in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “There are a lot of meanings to it and my favorite titles always mean many things.” He explains about how “love” can be an adjective or a verb, “We’re looking at a person’s love life, so it’s called ‘Love Life’ and yeah, it’s a directive with this verb, telling people to love their lives. It was about the push and pull between those two words as separate ideas (love and life) and looking at a person’s life through their loves and looking at love as a way to understand a person’s life.”

NBC fall drama Bluff City Law had its world premiere, and Starz rolled out the first episode of The Rook. Sundance panel explores how to find audiences on the right platform
’Conflict is really what drives story [and serves as] the engine.’

The exponential growth of the indie episodic form continues to benefit from the support of cable and diverse digital platforms but the trick is to match the content to the platform, a Sundance panel heard.

While there is plenty of money to be made – a report last year by business consultancy firm Grand View Research said the film and entertainment market will surpass $114bn by 2025 – creating an audience is by no means a fait accompli, according to Deniese Davis of Issa Rae Productions, a producer on the HBO comedy series Insecure.

‘Roseanne’ Ep Whitney Cummings Exits After “Surreal, Incredible” Experience”; Series Adds New Writers For Season 2
John Goodman, Roseanne Barr, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Laurie Metcalf in Roseanne (1988)
Updated 11:15 Am: Whitney Cummings will not be back as executive producer/co-showrunner of Roseanne for the show’s 13-episode eleventh season, with executive producer/co-showrunner Bruce Helford taking the reigns as the sole showrunner.

“Whitney just had too much on her plate to commit,” Helford told Deadline. “But she’s always a part of the Roseanne family.”

Cummings later confirmed the news on Twitter. “Working on Roseanne was a surreal, incredible experience,” she wrote. “Due to work commitments and my tour schedule, I’m gonna have to watch the Connors from the sidelines next season. It was an honor to work with such an incredible group of actors, writers and crew. Harry Levin, you can stop calling my cell phone now.”

Returning as writers on the show are Wanda Sykes and Norm MacDonald as well as veteran Roseanne alumni Bruce Rasmussen, Dave Caplan, Sid Youngers and Betsy Borns, all...

‘Roseanne’ Will Bring Back Muslim Neighbors and Add Hispanic Characters As Producer Promises Greater Diversity
John Goodman, Roseanne Barr, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman, Alicia Goranson, and Laurie Metcalf in Roseanne (1988)
The future story of “Roseanne” is literally yet to be written, but executive producer Bruce Helford told reporters Friday morning that there’s still a place for the Conner’s next-door Muslim neighbors.

On a media call Friday morning, Helford explained that the Al-Harazi family featured in the reboot’s “Go Cubs” episode is in the show’s plans for next season.

“We haven’t started breaking stories or anything else. We want to bring the Al-Harazis back. We definitely want them to return. They’re their neighbors. They live right next door, so we definitely want to see more of them,” Helford said.

In response to news from upfronts this past week that the show might de-emphasize its political strains, Helford explained that “Roseanne” had no immediate plans to avoid social issues.

“We don’t want to be preachy,” Helford said. “We’re not doing issue-of-the-week. But at the same time,...

‘Transparent’ Cast Q&A: On Bdsm And What It’s Like When Jill Soloway Whispers in Your Ear
Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, Judith Light, and Alexandra Billings in Transparent (2014)
In case you are one of the few people who managed to savor the latest season of “Transparent,” rather than watching all ten episodes in one or two sittings when they came out last Friday: Racy spoilers ahead.

The cast spoke to IndieWire about Sarah’s (Amy Landecker) meltdown in front of her professional dominant, and Josh’s (Jay Duplass) pursuing a trans woman (the very talented Trace Lysette in a breakthrough role). What’s clear from speaking to these seasoned actors is that they don’t blink when taking on difficult scenes; mostly because of the singularly supportive environment created by revolutionary “Transparent” creator/producer/writer/director Jill Soloway.
