When Apple TV+'s Physical returns for its final season, Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) will face some serious competition. The dark comedy, which stars Byrne as a housewife turned fitness entrepreneur, is welcoming Zooey Deschanel as Kelly Kilmartin, Rubin's new rival. In her return to scripted television, Deschanel will play a rising exercise star that threatens Sheila's position as a national television fitness personality. Although the trailer opens with Sheila's televised workout program making her feel on top of the world, she faces competition from Zooey Deschanel's new character Kelly Kilmartin. Kelly steps in as the voice in Sheila's head, causing her to doubt her every move just as her "healing journey" has supposedly reached its peak and sends her into a spiral.

The third and final season of “Physical” will introduce a new competitor to Rose Byrne’s Sheila Rubin.

Just as the dark voices in her head have silenced as Sheila commits to her wellness journey and builds a television fitness empire, a new opponent arises for the entrepreneur in a rising exercise celebrity, played by Zooey Deschanel.

“You are a national television personality now,” Greta tells Sheila in the trailer. “We are on the precipice of something big, there’s just one problem: Kelly Kilmartin … she’s the most famous fitness star.”

Doubt immediately begins to creep into Sheila’s mind, manifesting itself as an imaginary Kelly (Deschanel), who taunts Sheila by saying, “I’m better than you” and “you’re just hanging on by a thread, just waiting for that moment to snap.”

Rose Byrne is getting ready to say goodbye to “Physical,” as the series ends with its upcoming third season. “It’s all very bittersweet,” she says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.

Byrne stars on the Apple TV+ show as Sheila Rubin, an aerobics entrepreneur in the 1980s whose business is booming just as her marriage is falling apart and she secretly suffers from an eating disorder. “It’s challenging,” Byrne said in depicting the illness on a dark comedy. “I did a lot of research. I spoke to people in recovery. I spoke to a wonderful young woman who worked in an Ed recovery center who was every day with people in recovery and all of the behaviors.”

She realized that the show was handling the serious issue when friends who are in recovery told her that they found the storyline real and very relatable.

Deadline was the first to report that the series will be wrapping up the journey of frustrated housewife-turned-fitness mogul/lifestyle guru Sheila Rubin.
