Physical is a three-season-long saga about a woman’s journey from being a self-sabotaging bulimic person to becoming a successful entrepreneur who could come to terms with herself and live her life on her terms.
Sheila Rubin is not that different from every woman that we see around us. She is a flawed person who does not like being married to Danny, a college professor turned environmental activist. Sheila comes across as a self-centered person in the beginning, whose inner voice constantly insults, humiliates, and practically dictates her life. Her inner voice, her bulimic episodes, and her extreme body issues have been a full-time part of her life since her teenage days. Sheila was a victim of molestation, which nobody in her family tried to help her deal with.

In the series finale of Physical, lead character Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) takes a look at herself in the mirror and notices a pimple along her laugh line. Her natural inclination is to pop the blemish, but upon leaning in and examining the spot more closely, she decides to leave it be. The scene in the episode titled “Lucky Star” is a nod to the series premiere, “Let’s Do This Thing,” which debuted on June 18, 2021, and introduced Sheila in a similar vein along with the inner voice that would threaten to be her undoing over the next three seasons.
“It’s a small thing, but when she looks at herself in the mirror at the beginning, there’s so much beauty, yet all she sees is ugliness and darkness,” series creator Annie Weisman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “At the end of the season when she looks at herself in the mirror,...

After three seasons and 30 episodes, Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) finally got a happy ending on “Physical.” Except in keeping with Annie Weisman’s Apple TV+ series, that ending may not be what audiences expect. Warning: Spoilers ahead.
In fact, Weisman told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast that the ending might be more redemptive than happy. “She gets what she wants, but in order to do it, she’s alone,” Weisman said. “I did not believe that she could get what she wants and also be partnered. It’s just not true to her story. But she’s liberated, she’s free, no one’s tying her down. No one’s forcing her to be anyone she’s not. And she has a huge amount to give and she has community through her work, and she has figured out and cracked female friendship in a real way. She has real intimacy,...

[This story contains spoilers to the series finale of Physical.]
Across three seasons, Rose Byrne has seen her Physical alter ego Sheila Rubin finally achieve self-discovery and self-acceptance through aerobics, having been drawn initially to the exercise as she struggled with an eating disorder and what very well may be some of the most negative self-talk anyone has experienced — at least on television. From the moment viewers were introduced to Sheila in Apple TV+’s dark comedy, she was also joined by the protagonist’s biting and destructive inner voice that seemingly would stop at nothing to keep Sheila from achieving any sort of happiness within her struggling marriage to Danny (Rory Scovel), her extramarital affair with a Morman businessman (Paul Sparks) and her professional partnership with exercise entrepreneurs Bunny (Delia Saba) and Greta (Dierdre Friel).

Director Stephanie Laing was drawn to be a part of the series Physical because of Rose Byrne's incredible talent and the opportunity to collaborate with writer Annie Weisman. The show pays careful attention to the '80s looks and style, with a specific color palette that progresses throughout the seasons, thanks to the collaboration between Laing, Weisman, and costume designer Ernesto Martinez. Physical tackles important issues like eating disorders and mental health in a personal and honest way, and the show's creators hope to bring more awareness and encourage discussions about these topics.

As Physical winds down, it looks like Sheila (Rose Byrne) and Danny's (Rory Scovel) relationship will come back into focus, whether they like it or not.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at the penultimate episode of the Apple TV+ comedy, and you can cut the tension with a knife.
The video starts promising enough with the pair talking about their happier times until Danny has the gall to tell Sheila how she felt back then.
Sheila rightfully points out that she's been bottling up her feelings her whole life and isn't ready to go back to that.
With a matter of words, it seems Danny's hopes for a reunion are dashed, and that's reiterated when Sheila walks off, telling him that they're, indeed, done.
It's an emotional clip that shows the distance between the pair because their relationship was never on that strong of a footing throughout the series.

Zooey Deschanel is revealing what role convinced her to return to scripted television after taking a break once New Girl ended.
During a recently published interview with Vanity Fair, conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, the actress said she decided to step away from acting temporarily to spend time with her two children. But she admitted that she also got so burned out from playing quirky Jess Day for seven seasons on the Fox comedy that she needed a break and even considered never returning to TV.
“It was a huge undertaking,” Deschanel added. “I couldn’t picture myself getting back into the game like that, especially not right away.”
Before New Girl, the actress was known for her roles in several movies, including 500 Days of Summer, Elf, Almost Famous, The Good Girl and Our Idiot Brother. So as she eased back into the industry, years after the Fox...

Women can be their own worst enemies. Thanks to countless impossible standards thrust upon them over centuries, it can be easy to internalize the smallest things as major failures. Acknowledging these expectations and other ways in which society marginalizes women is nothing new — it’s the basis of fourth-wave feminism, which came into prominence around 2012. And over the years, it’s become more and more common for women to openly acknowledge just how deeply they’ve been affected by projections of supposed measures of worth, and how much it’s made them hate themselves.
Several recent TV series have explored the topic. The lead of Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) reveled in her self-loathing and the 2018 NBC comedy I Feel Bad said it right there in the title. But no display of internalized self-hatred on TV has been as vicious or as true-to-life as that of Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) on Apple TV+’s Physical.

The end of Physical will be here before we know it.
Apple TV+ went public with the key art and trailer for Physical Season 3 on Wednesday, and we have plenty of questions.
The trailer welcomes Zooey Deschanel to the cast as Kelly Kilmartin, and it's clear from the get-go that Rose Byrne's Sheila is not destined to be BFFs with her -- far from it, actually.
"Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of 1980s San Diego, Physical follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne) as she transforms from quietly tortured housewife to dominant fitness entrepreneur," the logline for the final season teases.
"In her journey, Sheila battled her way out of an unsatisfying marriage to Danny, fostered a dangerous relationship with real-estate mogul John Breem, and confronted the dark voices within her own mind that have shamed and suppressed her for so long," Apple TV+ says of the show.

Physical season 3 comes to life in a brand-new trailer. The dramedy series, which stars Rose Byrne, premiered on Apple TV+ on June 18, 2021. Byrne plays Sheila Rubin, a troubled housewife in 1980s San Diego who begins to find herself when she signs up for an aerobics class. The ensemble cast of the series also includes Rory Scovel, Paul Sparks, Della Saba, and Lou Taylor Pucci.
Apple TV+ has now unveiled the official trailer for Physical season 3, which premieres on August 2 and will also be the show's last. Check it out below:
Although the trailer opens with Sheila's televised workout program making her feel on top of the world, she faces competition from Zooey Deschanel's new character Kelly Kilmartin. Kelly steps in as the voice in Sheila's head, causing her to doubt her every move just as her "healing journey" has supposedly reached its peak and sends her into a spiral.

The third and final season of “Physical” will introduce a new competitor to Rose Byrne’s Sheila Rubin.
Just as the dark voices in her head have silenced as Sheila commits to her wellness journey and builds a television fitness empire, a new opponent arises for the entrepreneur in a rising exercise celebrity, played by Zooey Deschanel.
“You are a national television personality now,” Greta tells Sheila in the trailer. “We are on the precipice of something big, there’s just one problem: Kelly Kilmartin … she’s the most famous fitness star.”
Doubt immediately begins to creep into Sheila’s mind, manifesting itself as an imaginary Kelly (Deschanel), who taunts Sheila by saying, “I’m better than you” and “you’re just hanging on by a thread, just waiting for that moment to snap.”

Rose Byrne is getting ready to say goodbye to “Physical,” as the series ends with its upcoming third season. “It’s all very bittersweet,” she says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.
Byrne stars on the Apple TV+ show as Sheila Rubin, an aerobics entrepreneur in the 1980s whose business is booming just as her marriage is falling apart and she secretly suffers from an eating disorder. “It’s challenging,” Byrne said in depicting the illness on a dark comedy. “I did a lot of research. I spoke to people in recovery. I spoke to a wonderful young woman who worked in an Ed recovery center who was every day with people in recovery and all of the behaviors.”
She realized that the show was handling the serious issue when friends who are in recovery told her that they found the storyline real and very relatable.
