The idea that somehow an idiot of a man became someone to watch out for is not very new. It’s the way Sentinelle, directed by Hugo Benamozig and David Caviglioli, so unabashedly deals with this idea with the snappy dialogue that makes Sentinelle an outstanding comedy. There is just no inhibition here. That doesn’t mean the film derails and goes into foolish territory. Now, the whole film is, in a way, foolish, but it’s well intentionally foolish. The film that the makers are trying to make wouldn’t have worked if it ever tried to be something more than what it actually is. The character of Sentinelle has such flavor that he can be a primary character in so many sequels based around his misadventures.

Prime Video’s French movie Sentinelle, written and directed by Hugo Benamozig and David Caviglioli, is a laugh riot, with hilarious performances and some great comedic dialogue. Comedies are a bland genre these days, but the French movie is one of the most rollicking comedies to have come out in recent times. What’s great is that there is a cohesive plot as well, which enhances the characters and brings out the laughs. The movie is a fun ride throughout as we follow the cop/singer François Sentinelle on his adventures while solving a case for the President of Réunion Island. The titular character is a complete buffoon, and how he has kept his job for over twenty years as the Chief of Police is beyond anyone’s guess. But once he gets a case of importance, his days seem numbered.

In South Korea, where theatrical releases open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, the new films in cinemas this weekend with top ticket reservation rates, according to the Korean Film Council (Kofic), are led by Lotte Cultureworks’ Jung Woo-sung-starrer Steel Rain 2: Summit - director Yang Woo-suk’s sequel to his North-South Korea political action thriller.

The film opened Wednesday, July 29 and as of Thursday has clocked up $1.2m atop the box office chart.

Showcasing the wide scope and many nuances of French comedies, Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius’s “The Lost Prince,” “Mama Weed” with Isabelle Huppert (pictured), “The Lion” with Dany Boon, and “Welcome to the Jungle” with Catherine Deneuve are having their market premieres at the 22nd edition of the UniFrance Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris, which runs Jan. 16-20.

Paris-based company Indie Sales will head to the Paris-set industry showcase UniFrance Rendez-Vous With French Cinema with five anticipated French movies, including “Welcome to the Jungle” with Catherine Deneuve.

The other titles are the comedies “Enormous” and “Man Up!,” as well as the ecological tale “Fishlove” and the drama “Under the Concrete.” All five films will be having their market premieres at the Rendez-Vous which kicks off Jan. 16.

Co-directed by Hugo Benamozig and David Caiglioli, “Welcome to the Jungle” stars Deneuve as possessive mother and renown ethnologist who sets off to rescue her beloved son, a young and naive anthropology researcher, in the Amazonian jungle. The adventure comedy also stars Vincent Dedienne (“The Rose Maker”), Jonathan Cohen (“Budapest”) and Alice Belaïdi (“Odd Job”).
