Despite the silly premise, it was not an original idea behind Cruel Intentions, it was an adaptation of the 1999 movie which had Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe starring in it. But what makes it even more interesting is that the first movie is an adaptation of a French book, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

So yeah, Cruel Intentions didn’t just show up without any presence, it brought decades of seductive storytelling with it.

The Cruel Intentions reboot was first announced in 2021 for IMDb TV/Amazon Freevee in 2021, though it was not officially ordered to series on Prime Video until late 2023.

Upon release, the reboot proved to be polarizing, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 24% with a much-higher audience score of 81%. Prime Video has opted not to renew “Cruel Intentions” for a second season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. The news comes just under four months after “Cruel Intentions” first launched on Prime Video in November.

The series, which was led by “The White Lotus” star Sarah Catherine Hook, reimagined the 1999 cult classic film of the same name as well as 1988’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” except this time the tale took place in collegiate Greek life.

Variety has learned exclusively that the “Cruel Intentions” TV series at Amazon Prime Video has been canceled after just one season. The series originally debuted on the streamer in November 2024. The show served as a TV update to the 1999 film of the same name, which was itself based on the classic novel “Dangerous Liaisons.”

A TV show based on the film was set up at IMDb TV (a.k.a Freevee) in 2021 before being formally ordered at Prime Video in late 2023.

Cruel Intentions recently completed its first season on Amazon Prime Video with the story mirroring the plot of the 1999 film. But while the similarities were present, the show didn't share any obvious links to the movie.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman explained how the series and movie are linked, suggesting that all the characters exist in the same universe. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television partied like it was 1999 on Tuesday for the premiere of its Cruel Intentions reimagining in Los Angeles.

It was sadistic, it had sexual tension, master manipulation, villainous step-siblings, and a small sprinkle of romance. Prime Videos Cruel Intentions series, developed by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, attempts to replicate what made the 1999 movie so memorable (and quotable) but smartly takes its own less merciless path and adds new elements. The main players and their goals are more or less the same, but theres less verve and danger in the execution.

Adapted for television by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, this 21st-century retelling is a battle of wills between two volatile stepsiblings: the conniving and cross-wearing Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and the manipulative Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess). Determined to preserve Greek life on their college campus, the pair team up to exploit freshman Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who happens to be the daughter of the vice president of the United States. While the show hits all the beats of the film, it lacks originality and the sultry sinisterness that made the movie’s main characters so alluring.

Hollywood seems intent on creating remakes of well-known IP. So, after years of delays, the resurrection of “Cruel Intentions” was probably inevitable.

Amazon’s new Cruel Intentions television series is completely pointless, which isn’t the worst of sins, but isn’t much of a virtue either.

Roger Kumble’s 1999 film of the same title took Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ frequently adapted Les Liaisons Dangereuses and gave it a modern spin which, if nothing else, understood a lot of what was so pointedly twisty about it. The movie delivered some satisfying, dirty fun in a tight 97 minutes, with a spectacular cast that easily smoothed over any bumps in the thematically muddled story.

Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman’s Amazon series takes the potent premise, with its backstabbing and sexual hijinks, and mostly just manages to stretch it out across an eight-episode season — and presumably beyond, since very little is resolved by the finale. Its attempts to update the already updated tale are mostly hollow, and its ensemble of pretty young actors mostly forgettable.

A new Cruel Intentions is set to premiere on the streamer and the series executive producers are explaining why actor Sean Patrick Thomas, who co-starred in the film version as Ronald Clifford, had to take on the new character of Professor Chadwick in their tale of seduction, backstabbing and beautiful people doing very ugly things.

Selma Blair would have considered making a cameo on Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming “Cruel Intentions” TV series — but was never asked.

“I knew it was coming but I can’t believe I haven’t seen the trailer,” she told Variety on Thursday’s Power of Women event, hours after the trailer for the TV adaptation came out. “Maybe there will be a cameo or something but no, I haven’t been asked anything. I’m excited to see it.”

Blair portrayed the innocent Cecile Caldwell in the 1999 film, which is based on the classic novel “Dangerous Liaisons.” In the movie, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, Cecile fell for her cello instructor, Sean Patrick Thomas’ Ronald Clifford.

Thomas will appear in the upcoming Amazon series as Professor Hank Chadwick.
