Rudolf Hess (Christian Friedel) is the commandant of the concentration camp at Auschwitz. He lives in a luxurious house right next door, complete with servants and all the stuff stolen from the prisoners, with his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller). As the mundane activities of everyday life goes on, the sounds of the concentration camp are in the background, including gunshots and screams of agony. When Hess is due for re-assignment, Hedwig is horrified … to be losing her dream house.

”The Zone of Interest” expands nationwide on February 2nd. See local listings. Featuring Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller, Freya Kreutzham, Ralph Herforth and Max Beck. Screenplay adapted and directed by Jonathan Glazer. Rated “PG-13”

"I wanted to avoid the artifice of cinema." A24 has revealed a behind-the-scenes featurette for The Zone of Interest, the Best Picture nominated Holocaust film from British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer. It premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, and after opening in December, ended up with a total of five Oscar nominations – including Best Director and Best Sound. This film is about the Nazi commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his family who live inside a nice house located adjacent to this horrible concentration camp in Poland. It stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller as the couple, with Freya Kreutzkam, Max Beck, Imogen Kogge, Ralph Herforth. In this featurette, Glazer and his Polish Dp Łukasz Żal talk about filming this with cameras hidden in the house, and natural lighting, to make it as authentic and immersive as possible. While we expected nothing less, we’ve been hearing some interesting things about Jonathan Glazer’s soon-to-release holocaust drama, The Zone Of Interest.

Glazer’s last film, Under The Skin, was released almost a decade ago. Despite featuring a bona fide movie star in the form of Scarlett Johansson, the film was unconventional in almost every way. It famously was both booed and cheered at its Cannes debut, and we imagine that as something of a provocateur, Mr Glazer was probably delighted by that response.

Jonathan Glazer’s first film in a decade is also his second film with A24. Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” stars Christian Friedel as Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and Sandra Hüller as his wife and accomplice Hedwig Höss in a loose adaptation of Martin Amis’ 2014 novel. Glazer’s last feature was the 2013 A24 film “Under the Skin.”

In the film, the Höss couple strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden directly adjacent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where Höss was the longest-serving chief commander. Cannes: Jonathan Glazer “Overwhelmed” After World Premiere, Seven-Minute Standing Ovation for ‘Zone of Interest’

The Cannes Film Festival got in the zone of auteur Jonathan Glazer on Friday evening, hosting the world premiere of his anticipated new film The Zone of Interest.

The competition title, set and shot in Auschwitz, tells the story of a Nazi commandant and his wife striving to create a dream life for their family in a house and garden just outside the camp’s walls. It is loosely adapted from the Martin Amis novel of the same name. Toni Erdmann breakout Sandra Hüller stars opposite Christian Friedel, Ralph Herforth, Max Beck, Lilli Falk, Marie Rosa Tietjen, Stephanie Petrowitz and Sascha Maaz.

After the credits rolled, the audience responded with a six-minute standing ovation. Glazer took the microphone and offered brief comments, saying, “I’m really overwhelmed by this. Of course, it’s a dream. To be part of this, to be part of you, means everything.” The audience then continued applauding for another minute.

Jonathan Glazer is back on the big screen.

The “Under the Skin” director returns for his first feature in 10 years with “The Zone of Interest,” based on Martin Amis’ 2014 novel. The period piece follows Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), the commandant of Auschwitz, and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) who both strive to build a dream life for their family in the garden next to the concentration camp. The novel charts a love triangle with a Nazi officer who falls in love with Hedwig; the story is told from the perspective of three characters, one being a Jewish Sonderkommando.

Max Beck, Ralph Herforth, Stephanie Petrowitz, Sascha Maaz, Marie Rosa Tietjen, and Lilli Falk also star.
