‘Freedom Way’ Review: From Nigeria, a Kinetic Thriller Juggles Many Intertwining Narratives

A big city and its inhabitants are the focus of filmmaker Afolabi Olalekan’s engaging feature debut. Shot on location in the Nigerian capital of Lagos, the film has a palpable understanding of this big metropolis. Its pace is fast like the city, and it follows many characters whose stories continue to converge, as if Lagos were making them crash into each other. Olalekan maintains a firm grip on both the many narratives and the kinetic pace of the film, all of which make for a compelling and thoughtful watch, even if some of what transpires seems implausible and too coincidental.

The thematic linchpin of the crossing stories are macro subjects: corruption and economic strife. The micro subjects are the inter-relationships between several characters and how they depend on one another to survive in the city.

Nigerian Drama ‘Princess on a Hill’ Set at Showmax, Trailer Unveiled (Exclusive)

African streamer Showmax has set a November 2024 premiere for its latest Nigerian original drama series, “Princess on a Hill.” The announcement came during the 2024 Mip Africa event in Cape Town, part of the Fame Week Africa festival.

Co-created by Abiola Sobo and Tolu Ajayi, “Princess on a Hill” explores themes of power and ambition in a corporate setting. Ajayi’s debut film, “Over The Bridge,” premiered at the New York African Film Festival and scored 12 nominations at this year’s Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (Amvca).

The series stars Onyinye Odokoro (“Slum King”) as Zara, a young woman who wins the Lawson Group’s Leading Ladies reality show and finds herself tasked with saving the company. Bimbo Manuel, portrays the antagonistic CEO Moyosore Lawson.

The cast also includes Efa Iwara, Ireti Doyle, Femi Jacobs, Andrew Bunting, Mimi Chaka and Norbert Young. Chuka Ejorh and Shayo Oke-Sobo serve as co-executive producers.
