With the release of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" earlier this month, director James Gunn brought the stories of Marvel's ragtag team of cosmic criminals turned superheroes to an end. Though a few characters may see their stories continue, at least based on the film's credits scenes, this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy is finished. So what better time to take a look back at how we got here?
Back in 2014, "Guardians of the Galaxy" felt like a risk. The Marvel Comics title wasn't exactly well known among general audiences, and it was the first project from Marvel Studios that felt like a real gamble, even with the established and increasing success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the box office. Of course, James Gunn's gang of outcasts proved to be extremely popular, and the entire team is among some of the most beloved characters in the MCU.

This article contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
If you've seen "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," you probably have some questions. How is the new lineup of Guardians going to gel together? Did the High Evolutionary survive? Who is the seemingly pivotal new character Adam Warlock, and why was he so wasted in the film? These are all valid, even burning questions. But I have another one for you, one that may not be as burning, but is just as valid, given a remarkable amount of character development on his behalf. What, uh, is Groot?
It's easy to look past the peculiarity that is Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel and played primarily by Krystian Godlewski in motion capture) when the other Guardians include a bug lady, a jacked killing machine, and a talking raccoon. But even in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are few creatures as singular as Groot.

That Vin Diesel plays Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-known fact, but there are other actors that have played the member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU, with each one helping to bring a version, or more, of the lovable Marvel character to life. First debuting in the MCU with James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Groot then exploded in popularity in order to become one of the most loved Marvel characters on the planet, despite never having been a huge name in the comics. Gunn's found family franchise proved itself endearing, with Groot playing a pivotal role in its success.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to be the final movie for this version of the team, it is exciting to see what kind of MCU future Groot could have. The character has appeared in many different ways throughout the years,...

Disney and Marvel announced massive news throughout their over 4-hour investor day presentation today. Among the news dropped by Marvel's president, Kevin Feige, was that Baby Groot would get his own series of shorts on Disney+ called I Am Groot.
While not much is known about the, likely animated, series, other than that it will focus on Baby Groot and will introduce a variety of "new and unusual" characters on a series of different adventures, online fans have already begun to wonder if the stories might be based on the "I Am Groot" comic book series from 2017. The synopsis from those comics set Groot up for a series of adventures trying to return to Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket and the rest of his friends.
Everyone’s favorite little tree, Baby Groot, will star in a series of shorts on Disney+, featuring several new and unusual characters.
