‘Gubbi Mele Brahmastra’ review: This comedy of errors loses steam in the second half
SandalwoodDirector Sujay Shastry has a field day experimenting with various kinds of comedy, from slapstick to black humour.Aravind ShwethaGubbi Mele Brahmastra feels like a thematic sequel to Raj B Shetty’s Ondu Motteya Kathe. Raj here plays a software engineer Venkata Krishna Gubbi who prefers to be called Krissh rather than Gubbi – probably a pop culture reference to the Hrithik starrer, only identified by the spelling in subtitles. His folks want him to settle down, but Raj wants to fall in love. Debutant director Sujay Shastry also plays Nani, Krissh’s cockeyed best friend who is a pessimistic philosopher uttering food metaphors about the big bad world. There is an ensemble cast of quirky characters starring veterans like Shobraj, Babu Hirannaiah, Pramod Shetty, Girish Shivanna, Aruna Balraj and Manjunath Hegde. The breezy first half establishes the quirky characters and Krissh’s chucklesome situations of finding a bride. He zeroes in on Purple Priya,...

'Bell Bottom' review: Rishab Shetty is a delight in this comic detective film
SandalwoodRishab Shetty, an accomplished director, proves his mettle as an actor.Aravind ShwethaRishab Shetty, Jayatheertha and Tk Dayanand’s names have always been associated with movies that are rich in content. The trio had upped the ante by announcing Bell Bottom together. The trailer in Harikathe format (a unique way of storytelling popular in the '70s and '80s), the other unique audio trailer, and the first look promos had evoked great curiosity among the audience. The slow-motion shots, the retro looks and unique storyline had promised a fun-filled ride in an Ambassador car, and the film does not disappoint. Detective Diwakar (Rishab Shetty) is a constable by profession but a detective at heart. He grows up watching James Bond films and reading detective novels, and dreams about becoming one himself. But immense pressure from his father (Achyut Kumar), forces him to become a police constable. Within a month,...
