Since 1975, the United States Championship maintained its presence under Jim Crockett Promotions before WWE formed. WWE obtained the US championship through the acquisition of WCW during its 2001 buyout, unlike most championships in WWE today.

WWE reactivated the US Championship in 2003 after a short unification period with the Intercontinental Championship, which made it a constant mid-card title throughout. The company has used the title across its history to develop wrestlers who would go on to become future champions. The United States Championship history grew stronger with names like Eddie Guerrero, Ric Flair, and Booker T.

The Washington Capitals claimed their first Stanley Cup championship in stunning fashion Thursday night with a 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Sin City.

The win in Game 5 of the best-of-seven series ended a 44-year championship drought for any Washington, D.C. team, with the Redskins being the last to hold the honor in the 1992 Super Bowl.

Thursday’s win also marked the first Stanley Cup for Alex Ovechkin, despite being the Capitals’ star player for much of his 13 years with the team. The Russian left wing went on to be awarded the Mvp title for the 2017-18 season.

Ovechkin is now the third player in NHL history to score 600 career regular-season goals before hoisting his first Stanley Cup.

The Washington Capitals broke a two decade drought on Wednesday with a resounding 4-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals.

They will now advance to the Stanley Cup Finals to face the Vegas Golden Knights, with Game 1 taking place in Sin City on Monday.

While the Capitals were founded in 1974 and have battled for the Cup twice (the last time was in 1998 when they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings), the Golden Knights have exceeded all expectations in their first year of existence.

The Vegas expansion team was given 500-1 odd of winning the championship at the beginning of the season last October — by bookies in their home city, of course — making them the biggest long shots of the league.
