Caught Stealing, The Long Walk, and Black Phone 2 have all been given R ratings
Darren Aronofsky at an event for Golden Globe Awards (2009)
Darren Aronofsky’s crime caper Caught Stealing is set to reach theatres on August 29th, with Francis Lawrence’s intense Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk following on September 12th and Scott Derrickson’s sequel to his Joe Hill adaptation The Black Phone (a sequel simply titled Black Phone 2) dropping on October 17th – and today, we have learned that the Motion Picture Association ratings board has given all three of these movies R ratings!

Directed by Aronofsky from a screenplay by Charlie Huston, who is also the author of the book that the movie is based on, Caught Stealing has the following synopsis: Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore, but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant.

‘Black Phone 2’ Rated “R” for Strong Violent Content and Gore
Scott Derrickson at an event for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
The Grabber is back from the dead in director Scott Derrickson’s Black Phone 2 this coming Halloween season, and the film’s official “R” rating from the MPA has arrived.

Black Phone 2 is rated “R” for “Strong violent content, gore, teen drug use, and language.”

For the sake of comparison, The Black Phone was rated “R” back in 2022 for “Violence, bloody images, language and some drug use.” So it sounds like Part 2 is increasing the gore!

The horror sequel opens in theaters on October 17 from Blumhouse and Universal.

“Four years ago, 13-year-old Finn killed his abductor and escaped, becoming the sole survivor of The Grabber. But true evil transcends death … and the phone is ringing again.

“Four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke returns to the most sinister role of his career as The Grabber seeks vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by menacing Finn’s younger sister,...

The Grabber gets frosty in new The Black Phone 2 image
Image
Back in 2021, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and director Scott Derrickson brought us an adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone (check out our review Here) that appeared to tell a complete story that would stand on its own… but the film was made on a budget of around $16 million and earned over $160 million at the global box office. So, on October 17, 2025, we’ll be getting The Black Phone 2. Filming wrapped in January, and with the release date now just two months away, Collider has unveiled a new image from the film. It features a frosty version of the villain known as The Grabber, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Derrickson wrote the screenplay for the first film with C. Robert Cargill, and Derrickson and Cargill have written the screenplay for The Black Phone 2 as well, with Derrickson returning to the helm.

Ethan Hawke’s Haunting Return in ‘Black Phone 2’: First Look at the Chilling Sequel [Exclusive]
Image
Since it was announced to be in production back in 2023, Black Phone 2 has kept audiences perplexed surrounding its storyline. It made complete sense why Universal Pictures would want to follow up the 2021 film with a chill-inducing sequel, thanks to the overwhelming positive feedback and the gargantuan financial gain of the first, but the question remained — how will they do it? After all, the ending tied things up into a neat bow, with Finney (Mason Thames) not only escaping from The Grabber’s (Ethan Hawke) basement prison but killing the sadistic madman in the process. But, as we now know, thanks to the first trailer, Finney can’t seem to shake the child killer even in death. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re excited to share another look at the reunion between victim and villain in a never-before-seen shot of Black Phone 2.

Teasing how the storyline will go down,...

Image
Welcoming thrillers and chillers like The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Malignant into cinemas around the globe, 2021 was a terrific year for horror at the movies. Amidst the stand-out hits, one title knocked audiences off their feet with its story, direction, and performances — The Black Phone. Taking a page (or several) from Joe Hill’s short story of the same name, filmmaker Scott Derrickson paired C. Robert Cargill to co-scribe the screenplay and signed on a leading cast that included Mason Thames, Ethan Hawke, and Madeleine McGraw to answer the call and bring the author’s terrifying tale to life. Thanks to its crushing box office success, staggeringly positive feedback from critics, and a dedicated following, the director went on to receive the green light — from both Hill and Universal Pictures — for a sequel.

How ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Star Violet McGraw Kicked Off a Wave of Good Fortune for Blumhouse
Image
The Blumhouse family is counting their lucky stars that they met Violet McGraw’s family.

In April 2020, McGraw was cast as 10-year-old Cady James in Blumhouse/Atomic Monster’s techno horror-comedy, M3GAN. In July 2020, Violet’s sister, Madeleine McGraw, was hired for the banner’s supernatural horror film, The Black Phone. The two films went on to gross over $343 million against a combined budget of less than $30 million, prompting quick sequel green lights, beginning with M3GAN 2.0‘s release on June 27 and Black Phone 2 this fall.

Writer-director Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN sequel takes place two years after the events of his 2023 picture, and a now 12-year-old Cady is still at odds with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) due to her strict rules on technology usage and the lack of quality time they spend together. Gemma has been preoccupied with her efforts to publicly atone for creating a murderous AI doll,...

How To Train Your Dragon: Why The New Hiccup Actor Looks So Familiar
Image
A new version of "How to Train Your Dragon" is hitting theaters this week, and with it comes a new Viking-in-the-making, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. Originally voiced by Jay Baruchel, Hiccup is the odd duck of the island of Berk, whose locals spend their days fending off dragons that try to take their sheep or rain fire on the home of these oafish inhabitants. For Dean DeBlois' second take on this story, a brand new Hiccup has been tasked with taming the franchise's beloved poster pet, Toothless, and this time he's played by 17-year-old actor Mason Thames.

It's not just learning how to train dragons that's on Thames' to-do list, though. The film's frontman is testing the fires of one of what many argue is one of the greatest trilogies ever made (this fan included). Thankfully, just like every other cast member in this live-action iteration of the film, Thames...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Star Mason Thames Explains How an In-Flight Screening of ‘The Black Phone’ Changed His Life
Image
In-flight entertainment has changed the course of Mason Thames’ life.

How to Train Your Dragon director Dean DeBlois was already in the process of casting a live-action version of his animated franchise hero, Hiccup, and while he was en route to London-based auditions, he decided to pass the time on his transatlantic flight by watching a movie. He opted for Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone, starring the aforementioned Thames. The Canadian filmmaker was so impressed by the then-13-year-old’s performance that he just had to get him on the “long list” of 15-year-old Viking candidates.

“Apparently, they had been through a bunch of Hiccups. So Dean told me he watched The Black Phone on a plane, and then he was like, ‘Why is this kid not auditioning for Hiccup? Let’s get him in the room,’” Thames tells The Hollywood Reporter in support of How to Train Your Dragon’s June 13 theatrical release.

Horror Highlights: M3GAN 2.0, Black Phone 2, Five Nights At Freddy’S 2, Blumhouse Games
Image
Watch the New Trailer for M3GAN 2.0: "The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back. And this time she’s not alone.

The original creative team behind that phenomenon—led by horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse and director Gerard Johnstone—reboot an all-new wild chapter in A.I. mayhem with M3GAN 2.0.

Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.

‘Black Phone 2’ Trailer Breakdown – The Grabber Pays Homage to 1980s Horror
Image
The phone is ringing again. Will you answer the call?

The trailer for Black Phone 2 begins by introducing a snow-blanketed landscape that brings to mind John Carpenter’s The Thing from 1982 — the same year that this sequel takes place.

While The Black Phone was set in a Denver suburb, the follow-up moves to the more rural Summit County, Colorado. Its wintry Rocky Mountains setting evokes Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Incidentally, The Stanley Hotel in nearby Estes Park served as the inspiration for Stephen King’s novel.

The preview features numerous glimpses of grainy, homemade footage, harkening back to director Scott Derrickson‘s haunting Super 8 footage in Sinister — which was determined by a scientific study to be the scariest horror movie of all time.

We catch up with Mason Thames as Finney, who four years ago became the sole survivor of the serial child abductor and murderer known as The Grabber,...

Trailer Rings Up First Look at “The Black Phone 2”
Scott Derrickson at an event for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Blumhouse and Universal Pictures released the first trailer Monday for “The Black Phone 2,” confirming Scott Derrickson’s sequel will reach theaters on Oct. 17, 2025. Ethan Hawke’s Grabber re-emerges in snow-swept footage, drawling, “Did you think our story was over?” as survivor Finney Blake stops at a ringing pay phone.

Derrickson again writes with longtime partner C. Robert Cargill and produces alongside Jason Blum. Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw and Jeremy Davies reprise their roles, while Oscar nominee Demián Bichir and Arianna Rivas join the cast linked to Alpine Lake, a winter camp that becomes the new hunting ground. The synopsis points to Gwen Blake’s psychic visions drawing her brother back into danger as the Grabber’s influence expands beyond the grave.

In an exclusive Collider chat, Derrickson said the follow-up “is more violent, it’s bloodier,” signalling a step up from the basement terrors that propelled the original. He told...

Black Phone 2 Debuts Terrifying New Trailer As Ethan Hawke's The Grabber Returns From The Dead
Image
Universal has released the first official trailer for Scott Derrickson's Black Phone 2, which will pick up the story four years after the events of the 2021 blockbuster.

As per the synopsis, the film will see The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) make his chilling return, from beyond the grave, to seek out his vengeance against Finn (Mason Thames) and it sounds like things will be getting even more personal this time around as the sinister villain sets his sights on Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).

The Black Phone was a major box office success that arrived in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and ultimately grossed $161.4 million globally on an estimated $16-18 million production budget, which made greenlighting a sequel a relatively easy decision. It was also a pretty well received original horror film, boasting a healthy 81% Certified Fresh certification on review aggregator RottenTomatoes.

‘Black Phone 2’ Trailer: Ethan Hawke Is Resurrected as Serial Killer the Grabber in Blumhouse Sequel
Image
Ethan Hawke is back as serial killer the Grabber for indie horror hit “Black Phone 2.” Three years after “The Black Phone” first rang into theaters in 2022, its sequel already has been deemed a buzzy franchise. The first film grossed $161 million against an $18 million budget, with another installment announced in 2023.

“Black Phone 2” is co-written by returning director Scott Derrickson along with C. Robert Cargill. The first film was based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King. Hawke’s “the Grabber” abducted children and locked his victims in a basement; one of the kids, though (played by Mason Thames), managed to escape with the help of a haunted rotary phone that connected him to the ghosts of previously kidnapped boys. Thames is back for the sequel, along with original co-stars Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora.

Black Phone 2 Trailer: The Grabber Is Back From Beyond The Grave In Scott Derrickson’s Sequel
Image
The Black Phone is not a film that necessarily lends itself to being sequelised. Adapted from Joe Hill’s short story, Scott Derrickson’s ‘70s-set supernatural horror had a very specific premise: Finney (Mason Thames) has been abducted by local masked child-killer The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) and attempts to escape, aided by the ghostly voices of The Grabber's other child victims who speak to him through a disconnected black phone on the wall. By the final reel, Finney had – Spoiler Alert! – evaded The Grabber’s basement, and killed his tormentor. So, how do you do Black Phone 2 with a dead Grabber, and without… well, the black phone?

It turns out, Derrickson – and returning screenwriter C. Robert Cargill – have a strong get-out for that: The Grabber is back as a malevolent spirit, continuing his evil from beyond the grave. Check out the trailer:

Spooky stuff! Set in the early 1980s,...
