It's the holiday season, which can mean only one thing: it's time to watch Christmas horror movies! Christmas horror is nothing new. In the Victorian era, folks would gather by the fireside around Christmas time to tell each other ghost stories (this is how we got "A Christmas Carol"). Over the years, the horror genre has embraced this idea by unleashing horror films set on or around Christmas. Some of these films are quite bad and seem to recycle the same boring idea ("What if a guy dressed as Santa Claus killed people?!") over and over again. It’s full of life and color, and identifying it as scary would be out of place. And while Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” does make a perfect example of a ‘scary Christmas,’ it does not qualify as a traditional, spine-chilling horror movie. But contrary to popular narrative — certain media out there does it, and does it well. Think of the latest “Fargo” episode that runs a Halloween theme and blends it with “Nightmare Before Christmas.”

So, the appeal behind it is understandable. This is why we have curated a list of the best Christmas horror movies you can enjoy for a change of pace from all the happy and sparkly traditions.

Holiday horror has officially moved from the month of October to the chillier air of the Christmas season. Genre fans making their 31 Days of Horror list during Halloween can just as easily come up with 25 scary movies to watch every day in December. This year, Joe Begos and company added "Christmas Bloody Christmas" to the growing pile of Yuletide horror found underneath the VHS tree. Call it "Xmas-ploitation" if you must. In what's essentially a non-stop chase featuring a killer robot Santa (Abraham Benrubi), Begos could have easily delivered a run-of-the-mill slasher without any real visual flair. Instead, "Christmas Bloody Christmas" is a wonder to look at, mostly thanks to cinematographer Brian Sowell's ability to bathe the small town streets in a luminous and ominous trail of lights. In /Film's review, Chris Evangelista said the film has "a style so sharp that it borders on breathtaking," and he's not wrong.

’Tis the season for genre film-makers and distributors to cash in with horror-themed Christmas movies. So if current hit Violent Night sounds a little too classy and mainstream, then here is this shoddily made but tinsel-bright gift for you, the cinematic equivalent of a cheap soap and body lotion set bought at the last minute. It’s serviceable, but not a lot of thought went into it.

Adding to the corpus of films about Santas who are not just bad but positively evil, Christmas Bloody Christmas builds its plot around an animatronic toy-shop Santa Claus robot that suddenly develops a murderous instinct. Before the mayhem commences, however, the film spends time with record-store owner Tori (Riley Dandy) and her employee-friend Robbie (Sam Delich), two likable cool...

Once Christmas horror films provided a form of relief to those craving a break from peace and goodwill to all men. Now each winter brings a slew of them, so that they feel almost like part of the festive package. Overall quality has steadily gone downhill as they have strained to squeeze a little more blood out of increasingly anaemic themes. With a simple plot about a killer robot Santa, Christmas Bloody Christmas might sound like more of the same, but writer/director Joe Begos really knows how to tell a story, and against the odds, this film is a gift to jaded viewers.

Riley Dandy plays Tori, a record shop owner who, like many people in retail, is feeling the strain of dealing with festive shoppers. She wants to spend the evening getting drunk and having fun with her Tinder date. Employee Robbie (Sam Delich) has other ideas, however.

While Violent Night is lighting the box office on fire, there’s another film featuring a Santa with a bit of bloodlust: Christmas Bloody Christmas. Thankfully this Santa is much less friendly and a lot more homicidal. I was fortunate enough to talk with the writer/director, Joe Begos, and pick his brain on this wonderful little title. He talks about how it started as a Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, only to evolve into a killer robot Santa film. This is probably my favorite conversation yet, so don’t miss it!

Christmas has become a ripe season for horror. The holiday horror subgenre is alive and kicking, and it feels like every year we get at least a handful of Christmas-set creepers, usually involving some sort of killer Santa Claus. It's nothing new — Santa has been slashing for years, in one form or another. When TriStar Pictures released "Silent Night, Deadly Night" in 1984, complete with a poster featuring Santa's arm clutching an axe as he descends down a chimney, there was an uproar. Review: Recently, I went to the World Premiere screening of Christmas Bloody Christmas at this year’s Beyond Fest. Intending to review this flick, I decided to go in completely blind. Indeed, the title gives a little warning, but the lively introduction of writer/director Joe Begos grabbed my attention. Whatever this holiday offering had, it was going to be rambunctious. And now, I’m happy to say that the wild and wooly, fast-paced fright fest is perhaps one of the best St. Nick inspired horror features in recent years. Bloody, with practical effects, and many F-bombs to offend those who don’t like cursing. And I cannot wait to talk about the rockstar performances of Sam Delich and especially Riley Dandy.

Christmas Bloody Christmas will release day-and-date in theaters from Rlje Films and streaming on Shudder on December 9, 2022, giving you the choice to watch in theaters or at home.

The film is set on Christmas Eve and “centers on Tori Tooms (Riley Dandy), a fiery record store owner who just wants to get drunk and party for the holiday — until a robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and begins a rampant killing spree that forces her into a blood-spattered battle for survival.”

Sam Delich, Jonah Ray Rodrigues, Dora Madison and Jeremy Gardner also star in Christmas Bloody Christmas along with Jeff Daniel Phillips and Abraham Benrubi.

Exclusive: Joe Begos’ holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas has wrapped up a deal with AMC Networks siblings Rjle Films and Shudder that will see the slasher pic released day-and-date in theaters and on the genre streaming site December 9.

The deal comes as the pic readies for its world premiere Wednesday at Beyond Fest in Hollywood.

Exclusive: Australian actor Sam Delich, who is currently appearing in Netflix’s Joseph Kosinski feature Spiderhead, has landed a major recurring role on Disney+’s comedy-drama series Last Days of the Space Age.

Details of his role are being kept under wraps, but we understand he will essentially play the villain of the piece, which is a tentpole of Disney+’s Australia and New Zealand 2022/23 slate and was unveiled in Sydney last month.

Last Days of the Space Age is an eight-part dramedy series set in 1979 Perth in Western Australia, as a power strike threatens to plunge the region into darkness, while the city hosts the iconic Miss Universe pageant and the US space station Skylab crashes just beyond the city’s suburbs. Against this backdrop, three families in a tight-knit coastal community find their marriages, friendships and futures put to the test.

The horror/thriller stars Dafna Kronental, Mathew Cooper, Sam Delich, and Eddie Baroo. Roger Scott makes his feature directorial and screenwriting debut with the film. Rlje Films will release The Marshes on DVD for $27.97 and on Blu-ray for $15.95.
