As the adage goes, music marks time. We’ve all had formative experiences to different soundtracks. In No Sense In Wishing (Atria Books, July 8th) author and cultural critic Lawrence Burney sharply expresses his life and times in a powerful collection of essays. The book traces what he’s learned from his musical journey; Lupe Fiasco was his entry point into a kind of Blackness he initially thought was “corny as shit,” while the music he shares with his daughter makes him realize how hip-hop has shifted generationally.

Celina Jaitley talks with Subhash K Jha, about her 2005 film Khalid Mohamed’s Silsiilay.
It is 20 years of your best films?
Silsiilay was truly ahead of its time, a beautiful anthology of three emotionally layered stories, each capturing love and longing across different stages of life.
You were in a segment featuring the wonderful Tabu?
I had the privilege of being part of the most hard-hitting segment, opposite veterans like Tabu and Kay Kay Menon. Sharing screen space with such phenomenal seniors was an incredible learning experience there was such a natural creative synergy between us. The quintet would go on to become one of the best-selling girl groups of the 2010s, with their albums Reflection and 7/27 both going platinum, according to the RIAA. In Netflix’s Forever, a brief childhood friendship becomes much more complex but endearing as time passes. Created by Mara Brock Akil, reimagined from the 1975 Judy Blume novel of the same name, the series follows Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.)—two childhood friends who reunite as teens—as they navigate the giddy highs and heartbreaking pitfalls of their first serious romantic relationship.
Here, Simone speaks to Deadline about keeping calm on social media, working with her stacked cast and crew and the fun of portraying the life of a teenager.
Deadline: How did this project come to you, and how much did you know about the Judy Blume of it all?
Lovie Simone: I didn’t know about Judy Blume at all. She wasn’t of my time, but more of my mom’s time. But I definitely got the book once the audition was sent to me.

Reports of the demise of South by Southwest’s music element seem to have been exaggerated, with SXSW organizers clarifying that while next year’s event will be shorter, its music presence will not be diminished.
A spokesperson for SXSW confirmed that the festival is reconfiguring as the Austin Convention Center is set to shut down for renovation. As such, SXSW 2026 will be two days shorter, cutting into what has traditionally been the festival’s music-focused second weekend. (Since 1987, a music conference with four days of programming has taken place on Wednesday through Saturday.) But next year’s event will feature an additional night of music, melding into SXSW’s film and television programming.
“We are really excited about the plans for SXSW 2026” a SXSW spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “With the Austin Convention Center closing down for three years, we believe it’s a great opportunity to put new ideas into action.

After a commanding slew of spring 2024 releases and a prolific hip-hop beef with Drake, Compton's Kendrick Lamar has solidified himself as the greatest rapper alive. If the sold-out Juneteenth concert at the Kia Forum was Kendrick's victory lap after Record Of The Year contender "Not Like Us" decidedly knocked Drake out of the competition, consider his sixth studio album Gnx – named after his beloved limited edition 1987 Buick Regal variant – his newly renovated trophy case. Kendrick is celebrated beyond his rap abilities as a poetic songwriter, an impactful community leader, and a distinctively rare generational voice who simultaneously reflects and defines culture.
Kendrick hopes to add to his long list of accolades – which includes 17 Grammy Awards, 5 Number-One songs on the Billboard Top 100, and a Pulitzer Prize – at the 2025 Grammys in February, which takes place one week before his highly-anticipated Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show. Kendrick first gained a fanbase as K.

Why Will James Gunn Not Focus On Superman And Batman’s Origin Stories? ( Photo Credit – Flickr )
James Gunn is the co-ceo of DC Studios. He is a visionary filmmaker spearheading efforts to rebrand the DC Universe or Dcu. Famous for his films Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, Gunn is Dcu’s answer to Kevin Feige from the MCU. Trying to correct Dceu from its unlucky streak over the years, this reboot seeks to finally replicate the success of DC’s Comics, animations, and standalone movies into a shared live-action franchise.
The most awaited project under Gunn’s leadership is Superman: Legacy. The movie is set to launch the revamped Dcu in July 2025. It stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film promises to deliver a fresh take on the Man of Steel. However, Gunn boldly decided the movie would not revisit Superman’s origin story.

Khalid is opening up about his sexuality — and making it clear that he’s happy with who he is. In a series of X posts on Friday, the American Teen singer confirmed that he’s gay after being outed on the platform.
“!!! there yall go. next topic please lol,” the singer first wrote, using the LGBTQ flag, before responding to a fan to confirm, “I am [gay]! And that’s okay.”
“I got outted and the world still continues to turn,” Khalid continued. “Let’s get this straight (lmao) I am not ashamed of my sexuality!

For most of its runtime, Crystal Moselle and Derrick B. Harden’s fish-out-of-water non-fiction hybrid The Black Sea teeters on the edge of being too cute. But Harden is the variable––the lead performer whose dynamic with both actors and non-actors skirts the right side of the line between intuition and invention. It’s a line that’s also been the driving cinematic force of Moselle’s insider approach to the stories of outsiders. And throughout her career, one of her greatest skills has been her eye for not only the right story, but the right storytellers.
Harden plays Khalid (a loose version of Harden’s own persona), a magnetic Black Brooklynite who begins the film out of credit with everyone in the borough who’s lent him a dollar for a failed scheme. Out of opportunities, Khalid takes a one-way flight to a small coastal Bulgarian town after responding...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during SXSW 2024. Metrograph Pictures releases “The Black Sea” in theaters on November 22.
American indie filmmaker Crystal Moselle has been on both sides of the scripted/non-scripted aisle of storytelling. Her 2015 documentary “The Wolfpack,” about six Angulo brothers confined to a Lower East Side New York housing project apartment while passing their days reenacting scenes from their favorite movies, won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at Sundance that year. Her Gotham-nominated feature “Skate Kitchen” took a scripted narrative approach to rolling back the ins and outs of a chaotic subculture of female skateboarders, all coming of age, in New York City. Her latest feature “The Black Sea,” co-directed by the film’s star Derrick B. Harden, takes an entirely unscripted approach to the drama of a Brooklyn barista, Khalid (also played by Harden), with dreams of his own left stranded in Bulgaria,...

“In Camera” is a very sharp look at identity, acting, and the harsh world of the British entertainment business, as seen through the eyes of Nabhaan Rizwan’s character, Aden, a young British-Asian actor. With a mix of dark humor and surreal reflection, Naqqash Khalid’s brave first film peels back the layers of performative diversity and systemic marginalization.
The movie starts with a standard police procedural set, and Aden is placed as a dead body. This is a metaphor for his job status and says a lot about him. He is an actor who is always on the edge. He has to go through humiliating auditions where casting directors see him as nothing more than a “brown face” that can play any stereotypical part, like a generic terrorist.
In Aden’s world, there are few options, making it feel crowded. He lives in a small room in London with Bo,...
