Shemar Moore's 'S.W.A.T.' Spin-Off Gets Major Character Details Following Original Show's Shocking Cancellation
Image
After escaping cancellation on two separate occasions, the police procedural drama, S.W.A.T. was finally cancelled. In under a week, the universe was saved as Sony Pictures Television revealed that there would be a spin-off titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. Shemar Moore will return as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr. to lead the new show as the only confirmed actor returning from the original series...for now. There have been suggestions from studio executives hinting at the prospect of fan-favorites from the original S.W.A.T. series joining the spin-off in some capacity. Now, ahead of production kicking off, character descriptions have begun to come out.

Filming on S.W.A.T. Exiles will begin in September, according to a report from TV Line, with casting currently underway for five characters. Joining Moore's Hondo will be two characters described as a Black former Marine from South Central, described as charismatic, and an undercover cop who has a questionable shooting in his past.

The Drama Behind Shemar Moore's Swat Spin-Off Series Exiles Explained
Image
Just when it looked like the CBS series "S.W.A.T." was finally dead, after slipping the noose at the eleventh hour over the last two seasons, it yet lives again — only this time, there's a twist to the show's stay of execution. "S.W.A.T." isn't getting renewed, it's getting spun off. And, perhaps most surprisingly, there's a vocal contingent of fans who are none too pleased with this development.

In 2023 and 2024, CBS let the decision to renew "S.W.A.T." go right down to the wire — which is strange because the series has been slowly ticking upwards in the Nielsen ratings over the past three years. Obviously, it's nowhere near as popular as many of the streaming behemoths (as Nielsen's first multi-platform ratings showed), and, like many long-running shows, it keeps getting more expensive to keep the core cast together, but networks have traditionally preferred steadiness to taking a risk on something new.

This time around,...

Original S.W.A.T. Cast Reunion Possible in ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’
Image
Just when fans were making peace with the end of S.W.A.T., CBS dropped a curveball—again. After an unexpected rollercoaster of renewals, cancellations, and farewells, the popular action drama took one final bow with its Season 8 finale in May 2025.

Before the dust could settle, a spinoff series was announced. And at the center of it all? Shemar Moore, the show’s magnetic lead, stepped into the spotlight once again—this time, alone.

A Goodbye That Didn’t Stick

S.W.A.T. has always had a complicated relationship with cancellation. First axed in 2023 after six strong seasons, it was Shemar Moore himself who helped orchestrate the show’s revival for a seventh.

The network eventually gave it another chance, only to cut the cord again ahead of the 2026 broadcast schedule. This final cancellation seemed definitive.

CBS dropped several shows at once—including FBI: Most Wanted—and S.W.A.T. was among the casualties. Fans braced for closure.

'Family Is Important': S.W.A.T. Spinoff Gets a Very Exciting Update
Image
More S.W.A.T. co-stars could join Shemar Moore in S.W.A.T. Exiles, according to a Sony Pictures Television head. Fans can only hope all of Hondo's 20 Squad returns in the spinoff.

The entire S.W.A.T. cast could appear in S.W.A.T. Exiles, Sony Pictures Television Chairman Keith LeGoy hinted in a statement. Per Deadline, he said they're exploring ways to integrate the original ensemble in the spinoff, through guest appearances or cameos. "There is a S.W.A.T. family and that family is important," he asserted. "We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it's all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between. That's something that we are still figuring out."

S.W.A.T. Exiles was confirmed in development in May, shortly after the original series ended. Shemar Moore would return as Sergeant Hondo, who comes out of retirement to lead a unit of new recruits.

‘Exiles’: Sony Pictures Television Is “Figuring Out” If Other ‘S.W.A.T’ Stars Will Join Spinoff
Image
When Sony Pictures Television surprised S.W.A.T. fans with Exiles, a spinoff of the CBS cop drama, it emerged that Shemar Moore was the only original star signed up to star, disappointing many loyal fans and some of Moore’s co-stars.

The ten-part series, which is based around Moore’s Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson character, is being launched without an “anchor” broadcaster after a “frantic” dealmaking process.

S.W.A.T stars including Jay Harrington, who played Sgt. David ‘Deacon’ Kay, and David Lim, who played Officer Victor Tan, were among those caught off guard by the announcement. Harrington was sanguine about the move but admitted it “stung”, while Lim used the same phrase.

However, Keith LeGoy, Chairman, Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, admitted that there is a chance for some of the former S.W.A.T stars may end up on Exiles.

“There is a S.W.A.T family and that family is important.

New ‘S.W.A.T’ Spin-Off ‘Exiles’ Will Feature Some Familiar Faces From the Original
Image
Losing a job is never fun. But, it’s even worse when you lose your job and then the people or person you worked with for an almost full decade break off with the boss and start something completely different without you involved. Seem specific? Well, that’s exactly what’s happening for 99% of the cast behind CBS’ procedural, S.W.A.T. The title was part of CBS’ cancellation block this spring, but was saved in a roundabout way by Sony, who will continue the story of Shemar Moore’s Hondo not just through another chapter but in another book altogether with the spin-off, S.W.A.T. Exiles.

In the days since the off-shoot was announced, Moore has made it abundantly clear just how stoked he is for the opportunity, while those who he used to work with have understandably been a little down in the dumps. But, thanks to the words of Sony Pictures TV president,...

"It’s Kind Of Our Take On Top Gun: Maverick": S.W.A.T. Exiles Team Reveals The Spinoff's Hook
Image
The team behind S.W.A.T. Exiles opens up about how the mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick inspired the show's take. Surviving cancellation for a third time, it was announced in May that the world of S.W.A.T. would continue with the spinoff S.W.A.T. Exiles. Lead star Shemar Moore is set to reprise his role as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson Jr. for the project. However, rather than reunite with his former castmates, Moore will be joined by a new cast of characters. Sony Pictures Television, which produces the action drama franchise, has yet to announce a home for the spinoff.

In a recent interview with Variety, Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope was asked to shed some light on the creative direction of the surprise spinoff and the decision to bring on Lucifer's Jason Ning as showrunner and executive producer. In the quote below, Pope talks about why original series creator Shawn Ryan is...

‘Swat’ Star David Lim Reacts to Shemar Moore’s ‘Exiles’: “I’d Be Lying If I Said the Rollout of the New Spinoff Didn’t Sting”
Image
Swat star David Lim is speaking out after a spinoff was greenlit with just Shemar Moore, following the original show’s cancellation.

The actor played Victor Tan through all eight seasons, from 2017 to 2025, opposite Moore’s Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

“I’d be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn’t sting,” he wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram on Wednesday. “It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could’ve been a moment of reflection and recognition — for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.”

Sony Pictures Television announced earlier this month that it had greenlit a spinoff of the crime procedural titled Swat Exiles, which will...

‘S.W.A.T.’ Star David Lim Admits It Was Tough to Hear About Shemar Moore Spinoff: ‘We Were Brushed Aside’ | Video

“S.W.A.T.” star David Lim, who played Victor Tan for eight seasons on the just-wrapped CBS series, said it stung to hear about Sony’s surprise new spinoff, “S.W.A.T. Exiles,” based around Shemar Moore’s character Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

“I’d be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn’t sting. It was tough to see it announced just two days after our final — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside,” he said in a lengthy Instagram post.

He said he’d “been sitting with everything that came out last week,” and felt the need to weigh in. “Being a part of S.W.A.T. for the past 8 seasons has been one of the great honors of my life. I poured my heart into playing Tan — and even more than that, into the...

David Lim, who since Day 1 played S.W.A.T.‘s Office Victor Tan, has shared his candid thoughts on how the S.W.A.T. Exiles spinoff announcement was handled earlier this month.

In Exiles, which will begin filming 10 episodes this summer in Los Angeles, “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental Swat unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits,” reads the official logline. “Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program...

‘S.W.A.T.’ Actor David Lim Says Shemar Moore Doing a Spinoff Without Full Cast Does ‘Sting’: ‘Felt Like We Were Brushed Aside’
Image
“S.W.A.T.” star David Lim is voicing his disappointment that a spinoff is moving forward without involving him or most of his castmates.

It’s been a rocky road over the past few years for the law enforcement drama. CBS canceled “S.W.A.T.” after six seasons in 2023, but following an uproar from fans, reversed the decision and renewed the series for a seventh season. After Season 7 began airing, the network decided to extend it one more time before a final cancellation after Season 8. The series finale aired on May 16, and two days later, Sony Pictures Television announced that it would be producing a spinoff titled “S.W.A.T. Exiles.” (Neither CBS nor any other platform has agreed to air it yet.) Series lead Shemar Moore is currently the only cast member attached to “Exiles.”

That isn’t sitting right with Lim, who played officer Victor Tan for all eight seasons of the CBS drama.

Officer Victor Tan is weighing in on Sony’s plans to spinoff S.W.A.T.

In a lengthy Instagram post, actor David Lim, who played Tan from 2017 to this season, admitted that “I’d be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn’t sting.” He’s referencing the studio’s decision to move on with a new chapter of S.W.A.T. with Shemar Moore as the lead but without the rest of the cast that helped keep the cop drama on CBS for eight seasons.

“It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale—with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one,” Lim wrote. “After 8 incredible seasons, it felt like we were brushed aside when there could’ve been a moment of reflection and recognition—for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.

‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’ Spinoff Reverses Course: Original Cast to Return After Backlash
Image
S.W.A.T. Exiles spoilers and updates reveal S.W.A.T. fans came together to prevent the show’s cancellation; however, when a spinoff was revealed, only one original cast member was cast.

This announcement led to significant backlash for lead actor, Shemar Moore, who has played Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr. since the show’s inception.

The Spinoff Was Announced

When CBS revealed in March that Season 8 would be the final season for S.W.A.T., fans of the police drama came together to try to save it once again.

The show had faced cancellation in both 2023 and 2024, only to be saved at the last moment. Season 7 was initially meant to be the last, but CBS surprised everyone with a renewal.

Two key stars of S.W.A.T. were written out at the end of Season 7. Kenny Johnson (Dominique Luca), and Alex Russell (Jim Street), were both moved to recurring roles in Season 7 and eventually exited the show.

It was soon learned that someone had agreed to help Kate get work, but then began running a trafficking ring, making girls do cam videos for money. During that episode, we also saw Deputy Chief...

Swat star claims we'll "want so much more" after watching series finale
Image
Swat has been on the ropes before. Twice, actually. The procedural drama has done the nearly impossible two separate times, which is secure renewal after being canceled. It does not, however, look like the third time will be a charm.

CBS has canceled Swat again, and barring some massive changes, the upcoming finale will double as the show's series finale. It may very well be the last time we get to see our favorite characters. To make matters worse, one of its stars, Anna Enger Ritch, claimed that fans will get to the credits and want so much more.

Anna Enger Ritch teases a "personal" final episode “Good for Nothing” – 20-Squad must leap into action when Yakuza Assassins descend on L.A., targeting a number of mysterious Japanese ex-pats. Meanwhile, Nichelle finds her job on the line at the Inspector General’s office when a colleague accuses her of taking bribes,...
