Australian Studio Cosmic Dino Involved In ‘Bluey’ Movie Signs With UTA & Fourth Wall; Unveils Expanded Facilities
Image
Exclusive: Australian animation studio Cosmic Dino, which is providing end-to-end CG services for the upcoming Bluey movie, has signed with UTA & Fourth Wall for international representation.

The Brisbane-based company has also unveiled details of its new 1,500 square meter facility, which features a 40-seater 4K+ Hdr cinema for reviews, creatively inspired edit suites, cutting-edge pipeline, and an expansive open-plan office aimed at fostering collaboration between directors, artists and producers.

Co-owners Ricard Cussó and Ryan Greaves say both developments mark a natural progression for the studio, which offers full-service CG animation, adaptable to a wide range of budgets and storytelling ambitions.

Announced last December, the Bluey movie is a feature-length adaptation of the global hit animated series, written and directed by creator Joe Brumm, and lead-produced by Brisbane-based Ludo Studio in collaboration with BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company. It is slated for theatrical release in 2027.

'A Sloth Story' Review: A Food Truck Family Film
Image
A Sloth Story sprinkles sazón picante on the lovable critters in a teachable narrative about a Latino family sticking together when the going gets tough. These anthropomorphic CGI sloths are far from sluggish tree-dwellers. They dance salsa and merengue while cooking up delectable goodness for gorditas-loving gringos. The surprisingly deep plot tackles serious themes with frank honesty, but does tread melodramatic in a labored second act. The pacing thankfully recovers for a kooky and colorful finale that's sure to lift the spirits of all ages.

Laura (Teo Vergara) waits tables at her family's Tropicasa restaurant. She spins wild yarns of her parents' adventures in a humorous nod to Indiana Jones. Some customers are enthralled, but others are tired of waiting for their food. Her mother, Gabriella (Olivia Vásquez), preaches patience in cooking. She works diligently from a treasured recipe book. These yummy flavors are meant to be savored. Luis (Benjamin Gorroño), Laura's father,...

Grindstone and Roadside Attractions open dysfunctional family crime comedy Riff Raff on just over 1,000 screens. The film by Dito Monteil, which was warmly received at its TIFF 2024 premiere (see Deadline review), was adapted by John Pollono from a stage script from a 1995 production of the same name written by actor Laurence Fishburne.

The ensemble cast features Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, Lewis Pullman, Pete Davidson, Bill Murray, Miles J. Harvey and Emanuela Postacchini.

The story follows Vincent, an ex-criminal seeking a normal life and a nice weekend at a winter cabin with his wife Sandy and their son...

Sloths are having their moment right now. After “Zootopia” offered us one of the funniest moments to feature sloths on celluloid – a moment that propelled them into pop-culture-meme-land – the tired, boring, and super-slow creatures have found their representation in colorful tales ever since. Tania Vincent and Ricard Cussó’s “A Sloth Story” which gleefully and secretly also works as a tale of Latinx representation, features the loveable animals as the lead in a zany, albeit conventional take on bridging the gaps between the traditional and the modern.

The Pov here is a family of four – Papa Luis (Benjamin Gorrono), Mumma Gabriella (Olivia Vasquez), older brother Mani (Facundo Hache Herrera), and Laura (Teo Vergara) – who becomes our leeway into the story. The family lives blissfully in a small village where they run a restaurant and revel in the slow life. The family recipe book is a beloved gem that Gabriella owns...

Scarygirl (2023)
Scarygirl review – Tim Minchin, Deborah Mailman and Sam Neill add star power to tedious animation
Scarygirl (2023)
Heartfelt adventure film about a young girl overcoming her fears has half-baked environmental messages and mistakes colour for creativity

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

Scarygirl is one of those animated productions so loaded with colour and bling, so lit up like a pinball machine, that merely absorbing it makes you feel old. While watching I couldn’t help but wonder if today’s youth consume too many flashing lights and loud noises – and, by the way, keep it down, some of us have to work in the morning.

Once accustomed to the film’s retina-straining shininess, it became increasingly clear the creative elements conjured by the directors Ricard Cussó and Tania Vincent are relegated almost entirely to the surface, because under the hood it’s very familiar indeed. An archetypal hero’s journey in which a youngster heeds the call of adventure, steps out of their comfort zone...

Image
Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s latest feature, Evil Does Not Exist, leads this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards (Apsa) with four nods, including the gong for Best Film.

Hamaguchi’s nominations haul includes Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography for Yoshio Kitagawa. The film is Hamaguchi’s first film since his Oscar-winning Drive My Car and debuted at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The pic follows Takumi and his daughter Hana, who live in Mizubiki Village, close to Tokyo. Like generations before them, they live a modest life according to the cycles and order of nature.
