Over the last decade, Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry’s lyrics have grown increasingly concerned with the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated industry. The duo’s 2021 album Screen Violence drew largely on the experiences that Mayberry has had with creeps and stalkers, and her first solo album, Vicious Creature, continues to pose difficult questions about life as a female musician in a business that forces her to admit, as she does “Change Shapes,” that “we’re all snakes.”
Vicious Creature allows Mayberry to more fully embrace the persona of a ruthless, take-no-shit diva that she adopted on Chvrches’s “Gun” and “We Sink.” On “Crocodile Tears,” she declares, “Maybe I’m a villain but find it kind of thrilling when you cry,” and she takes on the role of a femme fatale on “Mantra.” Based on an encounter with a well-known musician who spouted conspiracy theories, “Something in the Air...

In July 2023, Lauren Mayberry took the first step towards building her musical identity on her own as she announced plans to move away from Chvrches for a while. What followed was a string of singles that positioned the electro-pop band’s frontwoman as a soloist for the first time. The latest is a record titled “Crocodile Tears,” which arrives alongside the announcement of Mayberry’s solo debut album Vicious Creature, out Dec. 6.
With “Crocodile Tears,” Mayberry gave herself permission to dismiss the boundaries of expected behavior. Written with Matthew Koma and Ethan Gruska,...

Lauren Mayberry, frontwoman of Chvrches, has announced details of her debut solo album: Vicious Creature will arrive in full on December 6th via Island Records. She’s also shared a new preview of the LP in the form of “Crocodile Tears,” and announced dates for a 2025 North American tour.
“Crocodile Tears” builds out the vibe established with previously released single “Something In the Air,” where Mayberry embraces catharsis. There’s a cheeky side to this new track, though: “Maybe I’m a villain, but I find it kind of thrilling when you cry,” she admits over bright synths and an upbeat drum keeping time.
In a statement about the project, Mayberry called out “the dark, physical, and subversive sides of femininity” as key influences over Vicious Creature as a whole, citing musicals like Cabaret and Chicago. “Crocodile Tears” is now the fourth track listeners can enjoy ahead of the full project in December,...

Health have released the new song “Free To Die” featuring fellow industrial luminaries Filter.
The song touts a prominent duet by Health’s Jake Duzsik and Richard Patrick of Filter. Their higher register voices are perfectly complimentary to one another, riding over blasts of hyper-compressed guitar and a pulsing electronic beat. Musically, the track falls in Health’s court — though Patrick’s knack for cutting vocal melodies is also quite tangible.

“Free To Die” comes as part of Health’s newly released Rat Wars Ultra Edition, an expanded reissue of their 2023 full-length.
In addition to the original 12-song tracklist, the band has attached a four-song “Addendum” EP that includes the track with Filter plus previously released singles “Ashamed” (featuring Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches), Health’s cover of Deftones’ “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away),” and the Bad Omens/Swarm collab “The Drain.”

Chvrches vocalist Lauren Mayberry is back with “Something in the Air,” her latest solo single that will appear on her forthcoming debut album Vicious Creature.
With a towering chorus and a bustling drum beat, “Something in the Air” is a cathartic, satisfying turn from Mayberry. A press release notes that in addition to ’90s icons Tori Amos, Pj Harvey, and Kathleen Hanna, Mayberry was also inspired by ’90s girl groups like All Saints and Sugababes for her solo album — “Something in the Air,” with its Britpop-adjecent arrangement, definitely feels aligned with the kind of open-hearted majesty that those girl groups boasted.
Meanwhile, Mayberry describes her frustration with conspiracy theories, rigid belief systems, and having a lack of control over the existential knowledge we crave. “You come up with your stories/ Conspiracy theories of why we’re all here/ Oh, I just want to be someone/ Someone who’s happy/ But why do you even care?...

In the summer of 2007 a group of emerging filmmakers and actors set out into the Scottish wilderness to make a low budget horror film in homage to the low budget American horror films of the 1970s. The grizzly slasher titled The Bench has never been completed, until now.

Chvrches vocalist Lauren Mayberry is back with another solo single, “Change Shapes.”
Led by a groovy, pulsating bassline, Mayberry rails against the expectations put on her as a woman, and how her efforts as a feminist are constantly undermined by those who think she’s doing both too much and not enough. “I’m preachin’ to the choir/ I’m a body for hire,” she sings, before launching into the strutting chorus: “I change shapes to get what I want from you/ It’s your game now you’re mad that I learned the rules.”
According to Mayberry, the song revolves around the idea of performance — how she’s a performer within the context of being in Chvrches, but also performing the idea of what her audience, her peers, and the music industry at large want her to be. “How do I keep people happy enough that they’ll let...

Kate Bush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday.
Outkast rapper Big Boi, who describes himself as Bush’s “biggest fan,” had the honor of introducing her into Hall of Fame. “On the surface, our music is obviously very different,” Big Boi noted. “But in important ways, it’s exactly the same. What I love about Kate’s music is that I never know what sound I’m going to hear next. She ignores everything that sounds like a formula and instead does whatever she wants to — like me. She challenges me as a listener and expands my ears and my mind.”

It’s been a decade since Chvrches first released The Bones of What You Believe. Now, the band is honoring their celebrated debut album with a 10th anniversary reissue, which features four previously-unheard songs and five live recordings from 2013.
“It feels quite strange that Bones is almost a decade old,” vocalist Lauren Mayberry said in a statement. “In some ways, it’s like it just happened, but also like that era was a lifetime ago. We are very grateful to all the fans who gave that album a special place in their heart, and still show us so much kindness today.”
One of the newly-unearthed songs is “Manhattan,” which was written right as that era from a “lifetime ago” was first beginning. As the band’s Iain Cook explained, it was the fourth song Chvrches ever worked on. “It was the first time we messed around with sampling and chopping up our vocals,...

Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry has shared her second solo single, “Shame.” Listen to the track below.
You never know what you’re going to get when the frontperson of a band branches out into a solo career, but “Shame” immediately feels like a Mayberry song, beginning with disjointed, industrial-sounding synths and the vocalist’s iconic chirp. Those electronic verses slow down in the lullaby chorus, however, as Mayberry sings, “I feel schizophrenic/ How poetic/ Romanticize all the pain/ How pathetic, drinking gasoline and calling me the flame.”
The singer-songwriter explained the meaning of the single in a statement. “I had the idea for a while of a song that had the tagline of ‘what a shame,’ but in a sarcastic way,” Mayberry said. “And the word ‘shame’ having a double meaning — the shame you feel and internalize, but what a shame you feel like that and can’t change it.

Chvrches are gearing up to release a deluxe edition of their debut album The Bones of What You Believe to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Ahead of its release October 13th, they’re sharing “Talking In My Sleep,” a never-before-heard outtake from the era.
Instead of Chvrches’ usual frontperson Lauren Mayberry, “Talking In My Sleep” notably features lead vocals from band member Martin Doherty, delivering haunting lines like “Be the reason for my fear/ And the reason for my smile.” While the upbeat track boasts a lot of the same slightly glitchy, caffeinated synth-pop qualities that make up The Bones of What You Believe, “Talking In My Sleep” offers some interesting backstory of a band beginning to find their sound.

Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry has performed her very first solo show, featuring a nine-song setlist that included new, unreleased tunes and a cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Check out the full setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
The show took place on Monday, September 4th, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, and marked the first live performance from Mayberry since she announced earlier this year that she would begin releasing solo music. Joined by a three-piece band, her new songs came to life with floral stage decorations, high-energy arrangements, and plenty of space for her bright, clear voice to carry the melodies.
Some songs, like the opener “Bird,” had a driving feel, with ’80s-pop-esque instrumentation. Others, like the closing number “Sorry, Etc.” had a harder, punk-ish feel, with Mayberry shout-singing “I’m sorry, et cetera” on repeat. The Madonna cover came near the end of the set,...

The track came about after a writing session between Mayberry and Jesso Jr. “I was thinking a lot about loneliness and homesickness, and as soon as Tobias started playing the chords, the lyrics and melody came to me really quickly,” Mayberry said in a statement. “I finished the song with my friend Matthew Koma, who really understood what I was trying to say.

Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches has unveiled her first solo single “Are You Awake?”
The Scottish singer-songwriter co-wrote the melancholic ballad with reigning Grammy Songwriter of the Year Tobias Jesso Jr. as well as pop-punk artist Matthew Koma, who added finishing touches to the delicate arrangement.
In a video prefacing the song’s release, Mayberry shared that “Are You Awake?” was a “happy accident” and fittingly came together on “a grey, rainy afternoon in December” when she was feeling “pretty homesick and missing everyone.” Luckily, she found a kindred spirit in native Canadian Jesso Jr as “people who are not from America living in America.” Stream the single below.
Mayberry is set to embark on her first solo headlining trek in September, along with support dates for The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie’s joint tour. Check for tickets to all of her upcoming shows via here,

Scottish trio Chvrches were Monday night’s musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing their latest single “Over.”
The single is their first taste of new music since 2021’s Screen Violence, a work conceptually rife with the darkness of the social moment: mortality, debilitating trepidation, and the dreariness that came with quarantining. “Over” carries some of that same weight, designated as a “miniature era” between their last work and whatever comes next, lead singer Lauren Mayberry said in an interview with Consequence. The track, which also marks the trio’s signing with their new label Island Records, isn’t indicative of a new record as of yet. Think of it more as a little snack to tide their fans over until the full course of a new album is ready.

Who doesn’t want a body like Bruce Springsteen? Apparently the New Jersey rocker stays in shape by limiting his meals, a strategy Chris Martin has since adopted.
In a new interview with Conan O’Brien, Martin revealed that he eats one meal a day. “I actually don’t have dinner anymore,” the Coldplay frontman confirmed. “I stop eating at 4 [p.m.] and I learned that from having lunch with Bruce Springsteen.”

Life can be a bit of a nightmare, and Chvrches just want you to wake them up when it’s over.
This cathartic portrayal of anguish is at the core of the Scottish trio’s brand new song, “Over,” and it’s one that mirrors the horror-influenced themes of their terrific 2021 LP, Screen Violence. Not only is “Over” the first new Chvrches song in over a year, it’s their first on a new label, Island Records.
“Over” also arrives with a stylish music video that features the band in a tropical climate, playing the song atop a structure with bright lights shining through it. Speaking to Consequence, the band was excited to film a new video with each member in the same place for the first time since their 2018 album, Love Is Dead. “We were all separated for the Screen Violence ones,” says lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry. “They had...

In some ways, a horror-themed album seems like the farthest thing you might expect from the Glasgow band Chvrches, known for iridescent synths and lead singer Lauren Mayberry ’s practically elfin, perennially chipper voice. But on their fourth LP, Screen Violence, Mayberry and band members Iain Cook and Martin Doherty pack the stifling anxieties and roving fears of the Internet age into earnest choruses and multi-textured songs, offering a project that swings from tinselly to tense as they try their best to expand their maximalist sound,

On the heels of celebrating 10 years of their debut Crazy for You, Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino hit The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Thursday to perform “Rollercoaster,” off of the band’s new album Always Tomorrow.
Due to the pandemic, Cosentino performed the track at home, accompanied only by her electric guitar. The image harks back to how the band got its start, writing and recording songs in bandmate Bobb Bruno’s bedroom. “Our reference was doing stuff in my bedroom,” Bruno told Rolling Stone about recording their debut 10 years back.

Chvrches delivered a socially distanced performance of their song “Forever” — recently featured in the Netflix hit Elite — on Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show.
Although the Chvrches members were in separate homes, Lauren Mayberry and company came together virtually for a colorful, cohesive rendition that provided the surprise hit with a makeshift music video.
Initially released in May 2018 on the band’s third album Love Is Dead, “Forever” has seen a staggering resurgence in popularity in recent weeks thanks to the song’s much-coveted placement in the Netflix Spanish-language series Elite.

Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry was taking a break from making her band’s upcoming fourth album when she began a self-isolated quarantine at her home in Los Angeles the weekend of March 13 — the same weekend that Season 3 of the teen drama “Elite” debuted on Netflix to an especially binge-hungry audience.
Though Mayberry was aware that the new season of the soapy, Spanish-language series features multiple, narrative-driven uses of Chvrches’ song “Forever,” a two-year-old album cut from the band’s latest release “Love Is Dead” (featuring production from Adele/ Sia /Beck producer Greg Kurstin), she had relatively low expectations, given that the song was never worked as a single.
“We’ve had things on film soundtracks or in certain TV shows or video games where you think, ‘That’s gonna create a lot of traction,’ and it doesn’t necessarily,” says Mayberry, whose bandmates Martin Doherty and Iain Cook were quarantined elsewhere in L.
