Dispatches From The WGA Picket Lines, Day 21: ‘American Horror Story’ Targeted In NY As LA Sparks Court Jersey Day Outside Wbd
Image
Striking writers in New York made a bid on Monday to disrupt work on American Horror Story by picketing outside a production facility in Queens where the popular FX series known for its macabre plot lines and star-studded casts is filming season 12.

Members of the WGA East, joined by members of SAG and other supporters of the strike against film and television studios, said they began arriving at Silvercup Studios at 5am, about two hours before members of the stagehands union, Queens-based IATSE Local 52, who then refused to cross the picket line.

The effect on the show, which stars Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian, was unclear. A WGA representative told Deadline that demonstrators caused filming delays on Monday for AHS, but sources close to the production told us that while some crew members were held up briefly at the picket lines, the horror drama never fully stopped production and...

Alicia Silverstone
For football fans, the Super Bowl is a time to see how the end of the NFL season plays out, with extra pressure if your team made it to the big game. For non-football fans, the Super Bowl is a time to gather together, eat lots of food and hush everyone around you during the commercial breaks.

For decades, the Super Bowl has been the most-watched television event of the year, and for that reason it usually plays host to the best-produced commercials around. There are literally whole TV specials dedicated to showcasing just Super Bowl commercials, packed with everything from celebrity cameos to surprisingly heartwarming messages.

2023 was not lacking for big talent or showstopping ads, and we’ve rounded up the best Super Bowl commercials that aired during this year’s game below.

Super Bowl Commercials 2023: Watch Ads With Bradley Cooper, Melissa McCarthy, Adam Driver, Bryan Cranston, Natasha Lyonne, John Travolta, Anna Faris And More – Update
Image
Updated with game-day versions, additional commercials. Super Sunday brought Madison Avenue’s annual spending spree, which has boosted the Big Game’s Hollywood quotient noticeably in recent years.

Celebrity product pitches date back to the days of leather helmets, of course, but in the increasingly rare air of the Super Bowl they have started to overtake the left-field breakouts of the past by the likes of Puppy Monkey Baby or beer-loving frogs. With Fox’s telecast commanding a peak level of more than 7 million for 30-second spots, producers and brands again are banking on stars in a big way. Super Bowl Lvii, a contest in Arizona between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, will feature commercials starring Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Melissa McCarthy, Anna Faris, Ben Stiller, Brie Larson, Steve Martin, Maya Rudolph and Miles and Keleigh Teller. Streaming services — a burgeoning category — will feature plugs by Will Ferrell,...

Trump Sides with Russia Over Brittney Griner

On the show, Trump maligned Griner as “a potentially spoiled person” who went to Russia “loaded up with drugs,” which is an exaggeration of her cannabis arrest.

WNBA Player Nneka Ogwumike on Asking For Our Worth
Image
Nneka Ogwumike is a WNBA champion, the 2016 WNBA Mvp, and a six-time WNBA all-star. She's a power forward for the Los Angeles Sparks, and as the president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association (Wnbpa), she propelled the collective bargaining agreement (Cba) of 2020 forward. The groundbreaking, eight-year Cba included a major increase in player cash compensation, enhanced travel accommodations, family-planning benefits, off-season career-development opportunities, and more.

Sometimes your dreams find you, and then you can detail the vision. That's what happened for me. I always thought that I was going to pursue a career in medicine of some kind. I was toggling back and forth between obstetrician, orthopedics, and dermatology. Basketball was always just a way to stay in shape and to stay well rounded. It wasn't until halfway through my senior year that I realized maybe I could play professionally. That dream was encouraged by my sister Chiney. She...

Steve Buscemi Goes Bowling for Michelob Ultra’s Super Bowl Story
Image
Steve Buscemi has gone bowling before — but not quite like this.

The actor, who played the bothersome kegler Donny Kerabatsos in the 1998 film “The Big Lebowski,” is hanging out at a bowling alley once again, and this time he’s at the center of activity. In a new series of Super Bowl ads for Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Michelob Ultra, the “Boardwalk Empire” star works at the Superior Bowl, where athletes including Peyton Maning, Serena Williams, Jimmy Butler, Nneka Ogwumike, Brooks Koepka and Alex Morgan hang out and help promote a suite of Ultra products.

“I didn’t even try and bowl while I was there,” says Buscemi, who did in fact get bowling lessons for the Coen Brothers’ “Lebowski,” but hasn’t really thrown strikes and spares in a while. “I’m not going to embarrass myself. I’ll just hang out and do my job.”

His assignment, along with the athletes,...

Will LeBron James’ Pro-Beijing Comments Give ‘Space Jam’ a Shot at a China Slam Dunk?
Image
With the NBA still on the outs with China and Nike hit with Chinese backlash over Xinjiang, it might seem that “Space Jam: A New Legacy” has two serious fouls against its chances of entering the world’s largest film market.

But signs indicate that Beijing may uniquely embrace the “Space Jam” star LeBron James in a way that could actually give the film an assist, despite China’s ongoing spat with the league and James’ lifetime Nike deal.

The Malcolm D. Lee-directed film debuted in U.S. cinemas and on HBO Max on July 16. If it ever releases, it will hit China at least a month later, significantly depressing returns.

The NBA’s China troubles date back to 2019 when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, infuriating Beijing and leading state broadcaster CCTV to banish the league from its airwaves.

Image
LeBron James and the animated Looney Tunes crew dominated this weekend's box office competition in Space Jam: A New Legacy. The highly anticipated sequel debut generated $31.6 million at the domestic box office, which surprised analysts who expected the movie to take a backseat to Marvel Studios' Black Widow. The Warner Bros. sequel to 1996's Space Jam easily beat previous forecasts to take the number one spot, leading James mention the haters on social media. "Hi haters!," James posted on social media, with a grinning emoji. In addition to LeBron James, Space Jam: A New Legacy also features NBA stars Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Nneka Ogwumike, Diana Taurasi and Klay Thompson.

Black Widow was expected to keep its number one spot in its second weekend after an $80 million debut last weekend. However, Space Jam: A New Legacy put a stop to that. With that being said, Marvel Studios still has a...

Not just LeBron James and a cadre of actors and athletes ranging from Don Cheadle and Steven Yeun and Sarah Silverman and Lil Rel Howery (with a little voice acting action by way of Rosario Dawson) to Nneka Ogwumike and Damian Lillard and Chiney Ogwumike and Kyrie Irving — though that, in itself, is quite a gang.

US Box Office Preview: Sequels Galore As ‘Space Jam 2’ and ‘Escape Room 2’ Take On ‘Black Widow’
Bob Bergen, Jeff Bergman, Gabriel Iglesias, Fred Tatasciore, Eric Bauza, LeBron James, and Zendaya in Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
It took 25 years, but Space Jam is finally getting a sequel, while Escape Room gets a less long awaited sequel after just 2.5 years. Space Jam: A New Legacy is the week’s biggest new release, and the NBA/Looney Tunes mashup is another of Warner’s HBO Max simul-releases. Continuing with the summer’s streak of horror films is the theatrical exclusive Escape Room: Tournament of Champions from Sony. Both films are about extraordinary competitions, but they will have a hard time competing with Black Widow, which enters its second weekend.

Directed by Malcolm D. Lee, Space Jam: A New Legacy once again puts the biggest star in the NBA on the court with the cast of the Looney Tunes as they face off against supercharged animated baddies that have taken on the powers of other NBA players. Last time around Michael Jordan headlined, and in the sequel we have...

LeBron James and Bugs Bunny Slam Dunk in ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Trailer
Image
After 25 years, Bugs Bunny and the Toon Squad are back!

Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 basketball classic that mixed NBA players with Looney Tunes icons. The film will release theatrically in the United States and on HBO Max on July 16.

This time around, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James replaces NBA legend Michael Jordan as the face of the “Space Jam” franchise. Playing a heightened version of himself, James struggles to bond with his tech-savvy son Dom (Ceyair J. Wright), who dreams of being a video game developer. In an attempt to steal some of James’ social media followers, a CGI humanoid named Al G Rhythm (Don Cheadle) sucks the father-son duo into a virtual reality called the “Warner 3000 entertainment Server-verse.” With Dom being held captive, James must defeat the formidable Goon Squad to save his son and escape the Server-verse.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ Trailer: LeBron James Makes His Slam-Dunk Looney Tunes Debut
Image
Warner Bros. and HBO Max have released the first trailer for “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the sequel to the blockbuster 1996 comedy that featured NBA superstars alongside Looney Tunes characters. Stepping into Michael Jordan’s kicks this time around is LeBron James, who spearheaded the title’s return under his production company SpringHill Entertainment. Though he played a comedic role in Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck,” “Space Jam 2” marks his first foray into leading man territory, where he plays a fictionalized version of himself in the live-action/animated sports comedy.

“Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee is helming the production after taking over from “Random Acts of Flyness” creator Terence Nance. The departure was said to be “amicable,” with both parties citing creative differences. While Lee is perhaps the more obvious choice, having proven himself a shrewd helmer of blockbuster comedies, Nance’s surrealist, stream-of-consciousness style could have added a...

Bill Murray Demands More Credit for His Game-Winning Assist in Space Jam
Image
Although Bill Murray is very well known for his roles in movies like Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day, the legendary actor wants just a little more recognition for helping his team win the final game in the classic basketball movie Space Jam.

As Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan seem to get all of the credit, many of us tend to forget that Murray played himself in the movie and even directly played a very big part in helping the Tune Squad defeat the Monstars in the climax. Now, nearly 24 years later, Murray is looking to get his just desserts.

In Space Jam, Jordan joins a cartoon basketball team to help the Looney Tunes characters win their freedom. It all comes down to a final game between the Tune Squad and the Monstars, with the former trailing the latter by just one point and only ten seconds remaining on the clock.

Space Jam 2 Officially Recruits Avengers: Endgame Star Don Cheadle
Michael Jordan and Billy West in Space Jam (1996)
Every so often, a movie emerges that captures audience's imaginations and becomes universally beloved by all regardless of age, gender, race or background. For some reason, 1996's basketball focused Space Jam is just one of those movies, and fans have been clamouring for a sequel ever since. Well, production for the follow-up began last year and casting announcements followed, with Avengers: Endgame star Don Cheadle being a particularly pleasant surprise addition to the roster, with the actor now confirming that, yes, he is definitely starring in Space Jam 2.

"No, I'm not playing myself. I actually can't tell you what I'm playing."

With the first movie having included the likes of Michael Jordan, Bill Murray and a star studded collection of basketball players playing themselves, it was assumed that Don Cheadle would be doing the same. Here though the actor definitely rules that out, stating unequivocally that his "secret role...

Space Jam 2 Director Terence Nance Exits The Project and is Replaced By Malcolm D. Lee
Space Jam 2 has had a long road to production. The movie has already had a few hiccups along the way, but it looks like the LeBron James production has hit another snag. The director of the film, Terence Nance, has exited the film and according to Deadline, he’s been replaced with Malcolm D. Lee.

According to the report, Nance ended up stepping away because the studio and producers had different takes on the creative vision for the film. It’s funny, you think this is something they would have figured out before they started shooting the movie. I’m sure there’s more behind the scenes drama going on that no one is talking about.

We don’t know anything about the story for the film, but Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green was previously cast as LeBron's wife. It’s also said that there’s a best...

Don Cheadle Joins LeBron James’ Space Jam 2
Don Cheadle, who we recently saw in action in Avengers: Endgame as War Machine, has joined the cast of LeBron James’ Space Jam 2. Everyone loves Don Cheadle so it’s pretty cool that he’s joining the project. He’ll make a great addition to the cast.

There are no details on who Cheadle is playing in the movie, so we’ll just have to wait and see how things play out. The actor will join the previously cast Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery) who will play LeBron's wife in the story. It’s also said that there’s a best friend character in the film named Malik, “modeled after Maverick Carter, LeBron's childhood buddy and producing partner in SpringHill.”

We also know that NBA players Damian Lillard, Anthony Davis, and Klay Thompson will appear in the film along with Wnba stars Diana Taurasi and Nneka Ogwumike. Several more NBA and Wnba players,...
