‘Get Millie Back’ Finale: Creator Explains the Different Perspectives That Set Crime Series Apart
Image
“HBO’s latest limited series “Get Millie Black,” from acclaimed writer Marlon James, begins and ends with a haunted house. Not literally haunted, but filled with painful memories of a broken home—an abusive mother steeped in homophobia who kept two siblings apart. For James, having the Jamaica based childhood home of detective Millie Black (Tamara Lawrance) and her sister Hibiscus (ChynaMcQueen) was a good starting point for exploring their relationship, but also the larger things like human trafficking that the series gets into. “A house is home and for a huge part of the show, Millie tries to turn it back into a home,” James told IndieWire. “Well, a home is also where the abuse happens. A home is where the hurt happens. A home is where their first encounter of people at their worst doing horrible things. A house can hide so many things. The house is the...

‘Get Millie Black’ Is Not Your Typical Detective Show
Image
Millie-Jean Black is not TV’s typical leading detective. She’s not male. She’s not white. And she’s not pursuing cases in New York City or London.

Instead, it’s Kingston. And over the five-episode limited series Get Millie Black — a joint production for HBO and the U.K.’s Channel 4 produced by Motive Pictures, founded by former Channel 4 executive Simon Maxwell — both her life and Jamaica, the country of her birth and lineage, unfold on screen in ways previously shielded from the outside.

Created and executive produced by novelist Marlon James, who won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for his 2014 novel A Brief History of Seven Killings, a first for a Jamaican-born writer, Get Millie Black is not content with just solving crimes. Instead, the series strives to show both why Millie is compelled to solve crimes and why those crimes need to be solved in the first place.

HBO's New Crime Drama Series Has Perfect 100% Rt Score
Image
A new HBO crime drama is maintaining its perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, even as more reviews in. The cable network is synonymous with the genre, going back to The Sopranos and its impact on television as a whole. But even in recent years, with shows like Mare of Easttown and Sharp Objects, some of HBO's best shows have blended murder and mystery with more personal stakes and character studies.

This year has been no different, kicking off with True Detective season 4. Led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, with Issa López as showrunner and director, the anthology's return garnered strong reviews and solid reviews. The Penguin followed that same path, with praise for Colin Farrell, Cristin Miloti, and the fact that creator Lauren LeFranc told a compelling crime drama that didn't necessarily have to exist within Batman's world. One of HBO's newest originals looks to keep the trend going.

Tamara Lawrance in Get Millie Black (2024)
Jamaica’s Dark Corners: HBO’s ‘Get Millie Black’ Reimagines the Detective Drama
Tamara Lawrance in Get Millie Black (2024)
HBO’s new television series “Get Millie Black” takes a strong and nuanced look at Jamaica’s complicated social milieu, deviating from standard crime drama storytelling. Marlon James, an award-winning novelist, created the five-episode series, which stars Tamara Lawrance as Detective Millie-Jean Black, a British-Jamaican police officer who returns to her birthplace after 18 years.

The show deviates from traditional Caribbean storylines by focusing on the rough neighborhoods of Kingston rather than gorgeous tourist sights. It chronicles Millie’s effort to find a missing young girl while also dealing with personal issues, such as her relationship with her transgender sister, Hibiscus.

“We filmed in Kingston to capture the authentic texture of the landscape and how people interact,” Lawrance informed the audience. Her portrayal of Millie emphasizes the protagonist’s dual role as an insider and an outsider in her native community.

The series takes on vital social topics, particularly LGBTQ+ rights in Jamaica.

‘Get Millie Black’ Star Tamara Lawrance Says Jamaica Location ‘Massively’ Impacted Her Detective Thriller
Image
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Get Millie Black” Season 1, Episode 1.

On paper, “Get Millie Black” seems any other detective thriller in a TV climate that loves this particular subgenre. But as the series dives more into detective Millie-Jean Black’s (Tamara Lawrance) dedicated quest to save as many missing girls as possible, it becomes clear that’s not the case at all. So much of what makes HBO and Channel 4’s latest seres so distinct can be found in its setting.

“We filmed in Kingston, which was so crucial to the storytelling because of the texture of the landscape, how people talk and move and interact,” Lawrance told TheWrap. “I think [filming in Jamaica] informed it massively, even being around the accent every day.”

Created by Marlon James, “Get Millie Black” follows a detective who was born in Jamaica but was separated by her sibling during childhood. While Millie was sent to the United Kingdom,...

Get Millie Black Review: A Noir Masterpiece from Kingston
Image
HBO and Channel 4 are set to release a gripping noir crime thriller that promises to be more than just another detective series. “Get Millie Black” emerges as a dramatic examination of trauma, identity, and justice, set against the complex backdrop of Kingston, Jamaica. Marlon James, the Booker Prize-winning novelist, makes his screenwriting debut with this five-episode limited series, adding a literary dimension to the crime genre that is both visceral and sophisticated.

The series revolves around Millie-Jean Black, a Scotland Yard detective played by the captivating Tamara Lawrance. Her journey is extremely personal: she returns to her birthplace to investigate a missing child case. She hopes to reunite with her estranged sibling, Hibiscus, a trans woman played by newcomer Chyna McQueen. The series delves deeper than just a crime story, revealing layers of family anguish, racial tensions, and societal restrictions.

James relies on his rich heritage, basing Millie on...

Marlon James & Tamara Lawrance On Portraying The “Richness” Of Queer Caribbean Communities In ‘Get Millie Black’
Image
Booker Prize-winning author Marlon James wanted to showcase the “richness” of queer Caribbean communities when compiling his debut TV project Get Millie Black, which launches on HBO in a few days’ time.

The decorated scribe, who has previously said he underwent gruelling religious rituals in his native Jamaica in order to “drive out the gay,” saw an opportunity to paint rich, three-dimensional queer characters and set them amid a traditional crime noir narrative in the Tamara Lawrance-starring drama series.

“While we are not shying away from the cruelty that our queer people experience, we also wanted to show the richness of their lives,” James told Deadline. “Some of their most important scenes are some of the lightest.”

James was inspired to write the show’s lead transgender character, Millie Black’s sister Hibiscus, after watching a Channel 4 documentary a decade ago about Jamaica’s ‘gully queens’, a small...

'Get Millie Black' Review - Tamara Lawrance Anchors a Gloomy Detective Series
Image
The ghosts from our past often come back to haunt us. HBO's limited series, Get Millie Black, uses this concept as its compass, following a detective returning to her hometown to solve a missing persons case and reconnect with her long-lost sibling. Although this is a British project, it is predominantly set in Jamaica, a Caribbean hot spot known for its paradisal beaches and welcoming atmosphere. Despite the country being idyllic in many ways, renowned novelist Marlon James takes us to Kingston's underbelly in his screenwriting debut, resulting in a visceral noir series. In a matter of five episodes, with only four provided for review, Get Millie Black is a brutal look at rampant crime, racism, and other social constraints.

‘Get Millie Black’ Review: HBO’s Jamaica-Set Crime Drama Puts a Sharp, Vivid Spin on Familiar Tropes
Image
A disappeared girl. A detective who seeks out the missing because of things she can’t place from her traumatic past. An awkward new partnership; stern and disapproving authority figures; a twist that proves that what had seemed like an isolated case is actually part of something larger.

HBO’s Get Millie Black is a vivid, pulsating reminder of how forcefully the cobwebs can be swept from even the stodgiest of plots if you find a location viewers haven’t tired of, introduce characters who rise organically from that environment and honor those elements as thoroughly as you do the inevitably rising body count and the unfolding conspiracy.

The five-part series marks a smooth transition to the small screen for Booker Prize-winning novelist Marlon James (A Brief History of Seven Killings) and a breakout starring vehicle for Tamara Lawrance. It quickly takes its place in that always-welcome category of off-the-beaten-path...

Ted Sarandos Cancels Appearance at Pen America Gala Event Amid Writers Strike
Image
As the writers strike continues to dominate Hollywood discourse, Ted Sarandos has exited a planned appearance at a Pen America event next week that was set to honor him.

The literary organization announced Wednesday that the Netflix co-ceo will no longer attend their annual gala to accept the Pen America Business Visionary Award. The event will still take place May 18 in New York as planned with Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost as host, and Lorne Michaels remains scheduled to participate as an honored guest.

“We admire Ted Sarandos’ singular work translating literature to artful presentation onscreen, and his stalwart defense of free expression and satire,” Pen America said in a statement. “As a writers organization, we have been following recent events closely and understand his decision.”

The group added that the event will include a focus on the rise of book bans and the constraints surrounding comedy as it...

How Tamara Lawrance Found Her Voice In ‘The Silent Twins’ & Hot Crime Noir Series ‘Get Millie Black’
Image
Exclusive: Silence has been golden for Tamara Lawrance who, paired with Wakanda Forever’s Letitia Wright in The Silent Twins, won the best joint lead performance trophy at the recent BIFA awards.

In director Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s picture they portray inseparable twins, Jennifer and June Gibbons, born to Barbadian parents in 1963. They made an unusual pact at an early age to remain speechless except for communicating with each other in an indecipherable dialect of their own design.

It’s a contrast to a TV drama Lawrance will star in next year, in which she plays a character with more than enough to say. She’s referring to the title role in Channel 4 and HBO’s six-part prestige series Get Millie Black, a crime noir thriller set in Kingston, Jamaica and the UK, created by writer Marlon James whose novel A Brief History of Seven Killings won him the 2015 Man Booker prize.

Anonymous Content In Exclusive Talks To Acquire Grandview/Automatik
Image
Marking another major merger in the representation world, sources tell Deadline that Anonymous Content is in exclusive negotiations to acquire management and production firm Grandview/Automatik. The two companies have had discussions about a potential merger going all the way back to the spring, with nothing serious ever coming of it, but talks have ramped up during the past couple weeks and sources close to the situation say they now are exclusive.

Reps for both companies declined comment on the talks.

Grandview/Automatik has been seen as a popular potential acquisition for some time as the company founded in 2014 has grown from a small boutique to a major player in the management and producing world.
