Elástica Films ha compartido el primer teaser tráiler de Romería, tercer largometraje de Carla Simón tras Alcarràs y Estiu 1993, que compite por la Palma de Oro en el Festival de Cannes y se estrena este miércoles en la Croisette.

En Romería, la directora catalana se sumerge en la memoria de su familia biológica paterna. La historia sigue a Marina, una joven adoptada que viaja a Vigo para encontrarse por primera con la familia de su padre biológico. Su llegada trae de vuelta un pasado ya enterrado. Guiada por el diario de su madre y a través de una conexión especial con su nuevo primo, Marina descubrirá las heridas familiares y podrá por fin revivir la memoria fragmentada de unos padres de los que apenas guarda recuerdos.

Last September, we had the first details on what Summer 1993 and Golden Bear winning Alcarràs (read review) filmmaker Carla Simón was cooking up for a third feature. Yesterday, we learned via the Cineuropa folks that production on Romería began this month. Newcomer Llúcia Garcia and Mitch are toplining the project with supporting players in Tristán Ulloa (of Sex and Lucía fame), Janet Novás (The Rye Horn) Celine Tyll, Miryam Gallego, Sara Casasnovas and José Ángel Egido complete the cast. Comienza el rodaje en Vigo de Romería, tercer largometraje de Carla Simón tras Alcarràs y Estiu 1993, en el que vuelve a explorar las relaciones familiares, esta vez inspirándose en los orígenes de su familia biológica paterna.

Romería sigue a Marina, que viaja a Vigo para conocer a la familia de su padre biológico, que murió de sida, como su madre, cuando ella era muy pequeña. A través de los encuentros con sus tíos, tías y abuelos, Marina intenta reconstruir un relato coherente de su padre y de la historia de amor que vivió con su madre, pero no lo consigue: todos sienten demasiada vergüenza por los conflictos de la pareja con las drogas, algo que Marina les recuerda con su presencia. Arranca en Barcelona el rodaje de la película “Harta”, de la cineasta Júlia de Paz (“Ama”) y basada en su cortometraje homónimo de 2021.

En “Harta”, tras la separación de sus padres, Carmela y su madre se mudan a casa de la abuela. Mientras intenta adaptarse a su nueva situación, Carmela anhela pasar más tiempo en casa de su padre, un artista plástico al que admira e idolatra. La sombra de éste llevará a las tres generaciones de mujeres de la familia a decidir el futuro que se merecen.

La película está protagonizada Kiara Arancibia, en su debut como actriz, Julián Villagrán (“Tratamos Demasiado Bien a las Mujeres”), Janet Novás (“O Corno”) y Petra Martínez (“Cerrar los Ojos”).

“La sociedad de la nieve” cubre de blanco la gala con 12 premios.

Ayer tuvo lugar la ceremonia de entrega de premios de los Goya. Una 38ª edición en la que “La sociedad de la nieve” se ha llevado 12 de los 13 premios a los que optaba. A la película de Bayona le sigue “20.000 especies de abejas” con 3 premios y “Robot Dreams” con 2 premios, incluido el de Mejor Guion Adaptado (probablemente la sorpresa de la noche).

Ja Bayona’s Society Of The Snow was the big winner at Spain’s Goya awards on Saturday night (February 10), scooping 12 prizes including best film and director to become the third-most garlanded film in Goya history.

Justine Triet’s Anatomy Of A Fall, was named best European film, and Pablo Berger’s Robot Dreams won the prizes for best adapted screenplay and feature animation.

Spanish cinema was celebrated at the 38th Annual Goya Awards in Valladolid, with Netflix’s The Society of the Snow taking a total of 12 trophies, the most of the night.

J.A. Bayona won in the Best Director category for The Society of the Snow (La Sociedad de la Nieve), with the film also taking Best Film.

The top acting awards went to Malena Alterio for Antonio Méndez Esparza’s Que Nadie Duerma (Something Is About to Happen) and to David Verdaguer for David Trueba’s Saben aquell (Jokes & Cigarettes).

Sigourney Weaver was honored with an International Goya during the ceremony with Juan Mariné receiving an honorary Goya.

El pasado jueves se anunciaron los nominados de la próxima edición de los prestigiosos Premios Goya, el destacado evento anual que celebra lo mejor del cine español. La gala de los Goya 2024 se celebrará el 10 de febrero en Valladolid, con la actriz y cantante Ana Belén y por Los Javis como presentadores. Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s 20,000 Species Of Bees leads the nominations for Spain’s prestigious Goya awards, which will be presented on February 10, 2024.

20,000 Species Of Bees premiered in competition at Berlin, going on to win the Silver Bear for best performance for Sofía Otero, playing an eight-year-old girl who spends a summer working in the Basque Country’s beehives while exploring her identity.

The film scored 15 nominations, including best film, best director and four nods in the acting categories.

Rather than horns, they look like tiny black catkins clinging to the grains on swaying stalks of rye. These little clusters — actually a fungus known as ergot — are a disease that affects the ovaries of their host plants, but can be made into an infusion that induces abortion in women. That kind of resonance, between the natural world and the female human experience, is very much at the heart of Jaione Camborda’s second film, “The Rye Horn,” which began its festival journey in Toronto and won top honors in San Sebastian.

But as symbiotically involved with nature as the film is, particularly in Portuguese master cinematographer Rui Poças’ earthen imagery, which is so tactile you can almost feel the wet gray sand of the Galician island setting under your toes, its somber narrative is comparatively undernourished. Atmospherics can only do so much to engage with a central character this wary and stoic.

The Golden Shell winner at the San Sebastián––the Basque film festival’s top prize––went to home-grown filmmaker Jaione Camborda for this absorbing and sensual Galician-language abortion drama The Rye Horn, an urgent film about women in a totalitarian environment that has potent echoes today.

It’s 1971 and the late stages of the Franco regime on an island off the northwest coast of Spain, the same Galicia region that provided the untamed landscapes of The Beasts and Olivier Laxe’s Fire Will Come. Maria, perhaps in her late 30s or early 40s, makes a living in this rustic part of the world picking shellfish, in touch with nature and the tactile world of her surroundings. But in this tight-knit community, she’s also an unofficial midwife, perhaps a symbol of how the centralized, male-led Spain of the regime has neglected this far-flung end of the country––only women protect women here.

The San Sebastian-born director's second film is set in 1970s Galicia and relates the struggles of a woman who finds herself forced to flee on a smugglers' route between Spain and Portugal.

The Best Director Silver Shell went to to Tzu-Hui Peng and Ping-Wen Wang for Taiwanese film A Journey In Spring and the Silver Shell for Best Screenplay went to María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat for Argentinian comedy Puan. Its star Marcelo Subiotto also won a Silver Shell for his portrayal of the hapless philosophy professor at the film's heart, which he shared, ex-aequo, with Tatsuya Fuji for his role in Japanese dementia drama Great Absence.

A predictably spectacular sunset spreads streaks of pink and orange across a northern Spanish late September sky, heralding the end of another packed edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, where at the closing gala, “The Rye Horn” the second feature from Spanish director Jaione Camborda has just been handed the Golden Shell, the festival’s top award.

It is perhaps a surprising win, but does now mark the fourth consecutive year that the festival’s most prestigious prize has gone to a female director. But in another way it has to be a first: the international jury, comprising French director Claire Denis, alongside Chinese actor and producer Fan Bingbing, Colombian producer-director Cristina Gallego, French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, Spanish actor Vicky Luengo, Canadian producer and distributor Robert Lantos and German director Christian Petzold, has chosen to award not just a Spanish film, but one from a female director who was...

The San Sebastián Film Festival has revealed the lineup of Spanish titles that will screen as part of the Official Selection of its latest edition, which is due to unfold from September 22 — 30. Scroll down for the full list.

Selected titles include Un Amor from Isabel Coixet, who competes for the festival’s Golden Shell for the first time with the pic based on the book of the same name by Sara Mesa and starring Laia Costa at the head of a cast also featuring Hovik Keuchkerian, Hugo Silva, Luis Bermejo, Ingrid García-Jonsson and Francesco Carril.

Filmmaker Fernando Trueba, of the Oscar-nominated feature Chico & Rita (2012), will present his latest project, They Shot the Piano Player, directed alongside Javier Mariscal in the fest’s Special Screening sidebar. The film, narrated by the voice of Jeff Goldblum, follows the figure of Brazilian musician Tenorio Jr. during the early days of the musical movement known as bossa nova.
