Image
Mufasa: The Lion King Worldwide Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)

The Lion King was released in 2019, and it is a photorealistically animated remake of the traditionally animated 1994 film. It was a huge box office success and is also one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. It was directed by Jon Favreau featuring the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor,...

Little 2019 Cast & Character Guide
Image
Featuring an impressive cast, the 2019 movie Little is a great comedy for teenagers and adults alike. The 2019 movie serves as a funny remake of a classic 1980s Tom Hanks comedy. Little follows Jordan Sanders, a tech company executive who is mean to her employees, as she magically gets transformed into her 13-year-old self. Funny chaos ensues when Jordan is forced to go back to school and her company is taken over by her assistant, April, who also has to pose as her aunt.

Little was met with mixed reviews from critics and grossed $49 million at the box office on a budget of $20 million (via Box Office Mojo), and, despite modest reactions, audiences enjoyed the film. Though some of the writing was criticized, the performances of the cast, including Little's 14-year-old breakout star and executive producer, were praised for their chemistry and embodiment of the characters. The Lion King, 5.05pm, BBC1, Boxing Day

Jon Favreau had already tackled a live-action remake of The Jungle Book to great acclaim when he took on Disney's version of Hamlet. Nevertheless, as with Jungle Book, these animals look the business, as we watch Simba (Jd McCrary then Donald Glover) struggle with guilt over the death...

Image
The popularity of Miles Morales as Spider-Man has exploded into the mainstream with Sony’s Spider-Verse films and Insomniacs Spider-Man game, leading many to wonder who could play the character in live-action as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, with Miles only growing more popular thanks to the aforementioned properties, it is only a matter of time before the MCU includes its own variation of Miles’ Spider-Man.

Aside from Miles’ growing popularity, the MCU has included subtle hints that he could be introduced in the future. From Donald Glover’s appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming as Aaron Davis - Miles Morales’ uncle - to the tongue-in-cheek comment of Electro’s in Spider-Man: No Way Home that "There's gotta be a Black Spider-Man somewhere...

The Lion King 2 Will Be a Live-Action Prequel
Image
Disney is still very much in the business of making dreams come true, with the recent Disney Investors Day providing so many gifts for fans that it is already making up for the drama of the past year. While a lot of the content revealed was aimed at the streaming service Disney+, the studio has not completely abandoned the big screen, with The Lion King 2 being officially announced with Moonlight director Barry Jenkins. Surprisingly, the follow-up will reportedly be a prequel to the 2019 hit, rather than a sequel.

The legendary Hans Zimmer will provide the score alongside the multi-talented Pharrell Williams and Moonlight composer Nicholas Britell. The prequel is set to be directed by Jenkins, who's coming-of-age drama Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture back in 2017, with the filmmaker having followed this up with the critically acclaimed romantic drama If Beale Street Could Talk in 2018.

While specific plot...

Image
Get ready once again enter the circle of life, as it has now been announced that Disney is moving forward with a sequel to last year's hugely successful live-action remake of The Lion King. The follow-up is set to be directed by Barry Jenkins, who's coming-of-age drama Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture back in 2017.

The Lion King 2 will once again make use of the groundbreaking photo-realistic computer animation that brought the first movie to cinematic life. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote 2019's The Lion King, is also returning to write the sequel. The movie has not yet been given a release date or production start date, but considering the huge financial success of the first Lion King, it is likely a high priority for Disney.

While specific plot details for The Lion King sequel are being kept tightly under wraps, the sequel will reportedly delve into Mufasa's past.

Leave it to Beyoncé Knowles-Carter to coordinate the release of “Black Is King” — a visual album produced across three continents and inspired by a $1.6 billion-grossing blockbuster — during a global pandemic. 'The Lion King' (2019) Movie Review
The Plot If you saw the original Lion King then you should already be familiar with the plot. A young cub lion named Simba (played by Jd McCrary as young Simba and Donald Glover as adult Simba) gets tricked by his uncle into thinking that he caused his father's death, so he gets banished from the kingdom where he learns about responsibility and what his true destiny is. This movie is pretty much a shot for shot remake of the original but there were a few short scenes thrown in to pad the movie out. If you ever wanted to see an extended version of Simba's hair blowing in the wind then you won't be disappointed here. And if you ever wondered how...

Cole Sprouse
Cole Sprouse, Joey King, H.E.R. and More Young Stars Sound Off on Social Media
Cole Sprouse
Social media has transformed showbiz, making it easier for young performers to express themselves, connect with fans and even get their big break.

A strong social media presence can even be used as leverage during the casting process.

But what do performers think about it? Variety surveyed those highlighted in this year’s Young Hollywood issue and got a wide array of responses: While some are pro-social media, others expressed deep ambivalence about its impact on society at large and the industry in particular. Cover star Cole Sprouse, who got his start on the Disney Channel with his brother Dylan and now stars in “Riverdale,” was especially passionate about the dangers of social media for younger actors, for instance, while “The Act” star Joey King was far more upbeat about it.

Here are some of the reactions:

Beyoncé's "Spirit" Blends Perfectly With "The Circle of Life," and This Gorgeous Cover Is Proof
Disney's reboot of The Lion King is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only were we blessed with a stunning soundtrack featuring some of the film's most beloved hits covered by new stars Beyoncé Knowles, Donald Glover, and Jd McCrary, but Queen Bey also released an album to go along with the film full of original tracks (appropriately titled The Gift). And now, musician India Carney has mashed up Beyoncé's "Spirit" with Elton John's "The Circle of Life" for one jaw-dropping cover.

In the video filmed by Baxter Stapleton, Carney - who previously appeared on reality singing competition The Voice - belts out the song arranged by Bryson Camper, making for an uplifting take on both The Lion King tunes. The collab comes from YouTuber Michael Korte, who is also responsible for the #HAM4BEY video that went viral back in 2016. So, what are you waiting for?...

The Real-Life Inspiration Behind The Lion King's Iconic "Hakuna Matata"
The original The Lion King movie is packed to the brim with quotable, memorable moments that every '90s kid knows by heart. The catchiest of them all, of course, is "Hakuna Matata," Timon and Pumbaa's peppy, hilarious ode to the worry-free life. The characters claim that the phrase "means no worries for the rest of your days," and they're actually right!

The lyric "hakuna matata" is a Swahili phrase, and it really does translate as "no worries!" According to a bonus feature on a special edition DVD of the original animated The Lion King, the creative team reportedly heard the phrase from a safari guide in Kenya while on a trip to do research. The pronunciation, however, is different in the movie than it is in Swahili (the "T" sound is apparently the key difference). The phrase intrigued the team for its opposition to the themes of royal responsibility...

‘The Lion King’ Review: Hollow Photorealism Devours Expressionist Charm
People are getting excited because Nintendo Switch is releasing a port of Link’s Awakening—an RPG that originally came out on the Gameboy two decades ago. More than a port, it’s an actual remake wherein everything is more or less the same with improved graphics and tweaks in gameplay wherever the developers see fit (surely in concert with what the new system can handle that the old couldn’t). That excitement is justified because they’re breathing new life into a classic game we can no longer play unless still in possession of an obsolete system. As such, the idea of doing something similar to The Lion King within its own medium should earn its share of buzz too. It often behooves advancing technology to introduce its updates via familiarity.

Asking an audience to feel the electricity that this sort of promise in the future cultivates does demand compensation,...

4 Ways The Lion King Improves On The Original Movie (And 6 Ways It Doesn't)
Disney continues its dominance of the global box office with the new The Lion King – the studio’s latest remake of one of its animated classics. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, The Lion King shows how a young Simba (Jd McCrary/Donald Glover) overcomes tragedy to become the rightful king of the Pride Lands.

While it mostly stays faithful to the 1994 animated classic, the new Lion King changes a few things and adds some original scenes to give old-school fans something new to look forward to. As expected, some of these changes improve the source material while the others don’t. Here are four ways that The Lion King improves on the original movie and six ways it did not.

Zooey Deschanel at an event for JustKiddingFilms (2007)
Will there be a second (500) Days of Summer? If it were up to Zooey Deschanel, the answer would be yes!

On Thursday, Zooey, 39, celebrated the film’s 10-year anniversary writing on Twitter, “It’s been 3652 days since #500DaysofSummer,” alongside a black-and-white shot of her and costar Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Gordon-Levitt, 38, also remembered the beloved movie, which follows his character Tom as he reflects on his 500-day relationship with Summer (Zooey) after she suddenly dumps him.

“Today’s the 10 year anniversary of (500) Days of Summer,” he tweeted, adding “Where did all the time go, @ZooeyDeschanel???”

Zooey responded, suggesting the two should film another.

The Lion King Review
A scalding sun sets off Jon Favreau’s The Lion King. It rises above an African savanna so realistic that a narration from David Attenborough wouldn’t feel entirely out of left field. But this isn’t a nature documentary. It’s cutting-edge animation, where photorealism is not only a priority, but also an irredeemable placeholder for charisma and emotion. Yes, the opening minutes of The Lion King are breathtaking, as the faithful populations of the Pride Lands flock together in a colorful celebration of their newborn prince. But they also signify a couple of patterns that remain frustratingly stagnant throughout this sloppy-seconds production.

First of all, it’s the same thing. But then again, it’s not.

The Elton John-Tim Rice song “Circle of Life,” which introduced the beloved 1994 film, also reigns in this surefire blockbuster. It’s unlikely that there’ll ever be a better-suited opening number.

Billy Eichner at an event for The Oscars (2015)
Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen may co-star in the new “The Lion King” with Beyoncé, but they didn’t meet Queen Bey until the world premiere of the movie earlier this month in Hollywood.

“She was really lovely,” Eichner told me when he and Rogen sat down for this week’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast. “We happened to be backstage together. Seth and I were the first ones backstage waiting to go and then Beyoncé was the next person. Seth and I were just in the corner not knowing what to do or say. She came right up to us, introduced herself and gave us all hugs.”

“She said, ‘Hello,’ and I was like, ‘Hi, I’m Billy Eichner, I play Timon,’” he continued. “And she was like, ‘I know,’ and gave us a hug. She could not have been nicer.”

8 Differences And 2 Things They Kept The Same In The New Lion King
Based on the 1994 movie of the same name, Jon Favreau’s remake of The Lion King is an adaptation of the animated musical that helped cement the Renaissance that Disney was enjoying in the ‘90s. Following Simba’s (Jd McCrary/Donald Glover) rise from young cub to king of the Pride Lands, The Lion King is a faithful remake of the original movie that looks almost exactly like the original.

But beneath the state-of-the-art digital animation used to bring the animals to photorealistic life, there are some noticeable differences that only older fans of the original would spot. Here are 2 things that the new The Lion King kept the same and 8 things that were done differently.

‘The Lion King’ Remake: The Circle of Life Returns With a Risk-Free Repeat
Beyoncé
Everything money can buy — including the vocal talents of Beyoncé and Donald Glover and the latest in digital pizazz — has been poured into Jon Favreau’s photo-realistic retake on The Lion King, the 1994 Disney animated classic. What’s missing? Let’s start with intangibles such as heart, soul and the faintest hint of originality. Favreau offers up a shot-by-shot remake of the movie that grossed nearly $1 billion. But unlike his playful approach to 2016’s The Jungle Book — a far lesser example of Disney artistry that served to free him up...

The Lion King Review
What’s this you say, yet another live-action remake of a much loved Disney classic animation? It’s clear that while some continue to see very little point in this current obsession with remaking absolutely everything, there’s no denying that the recent success of some of these productions goes to show that there is a real appetite for them. After all, who knew that Aladdin, admittedly one of the least eagerly anticipated of these reboots, could end up being one of highest grossing films of 2019 so far.

All of which brings us to The Lion King, the latest and possibly the best and most lavish of these live-action remakes yet. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film which is an impressive CGI re-imagining of the 1994 classic, stars the voices of global superstar Beyoncé and musician/writer/actor and all around cool guy Donald Glover.

How The Lion King Reinvented Classic Characters
Don Kaye Jul 15, 2019

Keegan-Michael Key describes how the hyenas in the new Lion King are far more dangerous now.

You know him perhaps best as one half of the comedy duo and TV series Key & Peele, but Keegan-Michael Key has struck out on his own as an acclaimed actor and voice talent. He’s been especially busy with the latter, lending his voice to two high-profile Disney releases: Toy Story 4 (where he and Jordan Peele teamed as the carnival prizes Ducky and Bunny) and now The Lion King, where he portrays Kamari, one of the two sinister/silly henchmen (along with comedian Eric Andre) of hyena leader Shenzi (Florence Kasumba).

The Lion King is, of course, the CG-created, photorealistic (not live-action) remake of the original 1994 traditionally animated Disney classic, in which young cub Simba (voiced by Jd McCrary and Donald Glover), exiled after the death of his father, pride...

Timon and Pumbaa Save (a Very Fluffy) Young Simba in New Clip From The Lion King
The first reviews for The Lion King are in, and although they aren't all that great so far, it seems most critics can agree on one thing: Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner are perfectly cast as Pumbaa and Timon. The dynamic duo bring plenty of laughs throughout the 2019 photo-realistic reboot of the beloved 1994 classic, and in a new clip from the film, we get to see them save young, fluffy Simba (voiced by Jd McCrary) from a pack of hungry vultures.

In addition to the new footage, above, Disney shared a behind-the-scenes look at the real-life cast voicing their roles in the studio. Not only did they record their parts in the usual recording booth, but director Jon Favreau also had the stars get together and physically act out the dialogue.

Check out both clips, then be sure to watch Simba and Scar go head-to-head before the film arrives in...

“The Lion King” Is A Visually Stunning New Version Of A Classic Tale
Among Disney animated titles, The Lion King holds a special place in the hearts of many. Part of the second Golden Age of animation for the company, it captured the imaginations of young and old back in 1994. Now, Disney has updated the look with a photorealistic remake, looking for all the world like actual animals are doing this riff on Shakespeare. Opening this week, for some, it will represent a magical experience. For others, it will bug them to no end. For yours truly? I recognize the issues that a handful of my colleagues have with it, but by and large, I was thoroughly entertained by the 2019 incarnation of The Lion King. Plot wise, the filmmakers stick almost completely to the animated original. This is still the tale of a young lion cub named Simba (voice of Jd McCrary), the prince of Pride Rock, regally presided over by his father...

Seth Rogen Says Beyoncé Got a 'Standing Ovation for Just Existing' at The Lion King Premiere

Beyoncé certainly felt the love on Tuesday night, at the world premiere of Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Lion King.

According to costar Seth Rogan, the singer and actress received a standing ovation by the audience at the Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles simply because she was alive.

I distinctly remember watching The Lion King in 1994. A high school kid who hated musicals, I was cajoled into going by my drama club friends. Needless to say, The Lion King was absolutely magnificent; an enthralling, song-filled adventure that would become Disney's most successful animated film. The 2019 version doesn't exactly capture the spirit of the original, but comes pretty damn close. The visual effects are groundbreaking, truly amazing. Director Jon Favreau brings the African savanna to life with stunning realism. A new generation of fans will be wowed by a classic story remade with cutting edge technology.

On the Pride Lands of Africa, a noble and powerful lion king, Mufasa (James Earl Jones), proudly displays his newborn cub to the animals in his kingdom. Young Simba (Jd McCrary) is a curious and rascally scamp who loves to explore. Along with his best friend Nala (Shahadi Wright Joseph), the cubs...

‘The Lion King’ Review: Disney’s Remake Is a Disastrous Plunge into the Uncanny Valley

Unfolding like the world’s longest and least convincing deepfake, Jon Favreau’s (almost) photorealistic remake of “The Lion King” is meant to represent the next step in Disney’s circle of life. Instead, this soulless chimera of a film comes off as little more than a glorified tech demo from a greedy conglomerate — a well-rendered but creatively bankrupt self-portrait of a movie studio eating its own tail.

With the possible exception of 2015’s “Cinderella,” which was touched with just enough magic to feel like a new wrinkle on an old fairy tale, all of Disney’s live-action rehashes have been faint echoes of their animated predecessors. But “The Lion King” isn’t an echo, it’s a stain. This zombified digital clone of the studio’s first original cartoon feature is the Disney equivalent of Gus Van Sant’s “Psycho.”

Unlike the rest of the Disney’s latest rehashes,...

The Lion King Review
Jon Favreau’s new animated version of The Lion King has, like its beloved characters, its strengths and flaws.

The image fades up on a peaceful savannah, the just-rising sun giving everything a rich, buttery glow, and then that music hits: the unforgettable vocal of composer Lebo M that kicks off “Circle of Life,” the masterful fusion of African and pop music that heralds the start of Disney’s 1994 animated landmark, The Lion King. But this is 2019, not 1994, and a recreation of that same shot with that same musical cue now launches director Jon Favreau’s new remake--still animated--of the same beloved tale.

The effect is undoubtedly still powerful. Following his similar take on The Jungle Book in 2016, Favreau’s reboot of The Lion King opening instantly triggers a wave of nostalgia that re-emphasizes how ingrained in pop culture the sounds and sights of that 1994 touchstone have...
