Image
Exclusive: Hulu has acquired exclusive U.S. rights to Let’s Start a Cult, an indie dark comedy co-written, executive produced by and starring top comic Stavros Halkias, slating it to premiere on February 4.

Directed by Ben Kitnick, the film follows an obnoxious loser who, having missed out on his cult’s long awaited ritual suicide, teams up with his bogus ex-messiah to rebuild their doomsday commune. Traveling together through middle America, the constantly-bickering duo induct a military wannabe, a mentally unstable mom, and a mysterious foreign hitchhiker into their cult… but will this family of outcasts fulfill their transcendent destiny, or decide this life might be worth living after all?

Released by Dark Sky Films in October, the film should see a major boost in viewership in its Hulu debut. Pic also features well-known comedians including Joe Pera, Tom Papa and Robert Kelly, as well as Ethan Suplee, Wes Haney,...

‘South Side’ Canceled at HBO Max
Image
South Side is coming to an end on HBO Max.

The comedy series from co-creators Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin is not getting a fourth season, a representative for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed platform told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.

“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a fourth season of South Side, we are so proud of the rich world Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin created,” the statement read. HBO Max went on to praise the team at MTV Entertainment Studios, which was behind the series, in addition to the “supremely talented” cast and crew.

“For three seasons, this beloved series balanced cutting, hyperlocal social commentary about life on the South Side of Chicago with silly, sometimes zany humor,” the message continued. “The result was a wholly unique, ambitious and fearless comedy that could speak to everyone living the American dream.”

‘South Side’ Review: Chicago-Set Comedy Returns for a Season 2 with Dreams Even Bigger than the City
Image
The season finale of the first season of “South Side” closed with a few friends in a basement, floating away into deep space. It would have been a bittersweet ending for the then-Comedy Central show if it had stopped there, a parting reminder of how big this collection of mismatched employees could go. Fortunately, after a two year hiatus, “South Side” is back — this time as an HBO Max original — and it’s not afraid to keep going galactic whenever it decides to.

Most of “South Side” still revolves around the employees of “Rent-t-Own,” a store that loans out everything from end tables to TVs to household appliances. In their downtime at work, Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and Kareme (Kareme Young) are usually deep into some plan that will be their ticket to a new job, better conditions at their current one, or (as is the case with the show...
